While it may be strange to see a Soviet Army statue in Bulgaria, it's there so we went to see it up close. It's a statue so nothing fantastic or worth going out of your way to see. But as we were taking an evening stroll around the park we snapped a few pictures.

Impressive statue, it’s massive, but lack of information about it. The park it’s in is nice but there was a pack of stray dogs (we saw a lot of stray dogs) so that was quite depressing. The dogs were filthy, skinny and had matted coats but were very friendly. Locals, including a lot who were walking their own dogs, seem to not care at all about these poor strays.

Somewhat forlorn and neglected - hard to know how to feel about this reminder of the Soviet era.....

I'm glad the monument is still here, very easy for modern states to air brush things away by building a multi story car park over them or sililar. But compared to many other Soviet memorials in Eatern Europe this one is among the most run down and unloved.
There is no element of solemn rememberance of the fallen or contemplation of the suffering and pain of war in the figures adorning the harsh imposing monolith and on the reliefs - this is a "Look at this - this is power - this is Soviet Victory - we are here and we are strong !". So I suspect its understandable that its neglected. I hate revisionist history - in its day this was all the rage in Eastern Europe - a region forever to be under the control (they imagined) of the politics and nationalism of their Soviet Russian neighbours and so it is a valuable piece of history and a reminder of the period when politics was exercised by concrete and statues and portrayal of power and strength,
So maybee the graffiti and rubbish and general neglect are very much a part of this interesting piece of the 20th Century.

Unfortunately the WOKE, Cancel culture reached Bulgaria too. The EU banners are everywhere even on homes post boxes... At the same time they decided to remove this monument as the hatred for "the Russians" has been growing since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. History is being forgotten and rewritten...

This monument is not very popular at all with all the Bulgarians I know. There are lots of their countrymen to celebrate - this monument to the Soviet Union is not needed nor is it wanted. The local teenagers use it to practice their graffiti skills. Its not attractive and I'm surprised its still there - there are far more patriotic things to celebrate than the presence of the Soviet Union in Bulgaria . Its definitely not a "must see" item. The University on the other hand is just round the corner. It would be more interesting and awe inspiring to go and see that instead.

This is a monument complex dedicated to the soviet warriors and army which helped the liberation of Bulgaria in the late 1870s. The main monument is surrounded by smaller ones depicting different battle scenes.
The complex is surrounded by a small but neat and nice park with a small children's play ground at one corner.
It is located at main transport junction which connects most of the public transport in Sofia including one of the metro lines.

The majority of Bulgarians despise this monument and it is nothing special to see. Periodically it becomes interesting because of funny graffiti, such as when the soldiers were redecorated to be superheroes.

The monument built in 1954 by the Bulgarian communist party to commemorate the Soviet occupation of the country after 1944 (they call it "liberation"), is one of the most divisive monuments in the country. Most pro-Western people would love to see it gone, while nostalgic pro-Russian communists see it as almost sacred. And, to add a bit of humour, it was seen in the 1950s as the "Monument of the housing shortage", because of the three figures occupying such a small space on top.

It may be tainted with unpleasant Soviet heritage, but nevertheless for the young generation it is simply a perfect meeting spot to hang out, drink a beer and, for many of them, skate as well. And for a social commentary you can go on the net and see what an unknown street artist did to it. (Unfortunately, it wasn't long before the municipality cleaned it.)

Wonderful monument, not far from the city centre, in a splendid park. It recalls the sacrifice if several soldiers of the Red Army who died to liberate Bulgaria from the Nazis
