Some of the artefacts in this museum are really world class. Really exquisite worked gold from the Thracian kingdom - marvel at how they did this 2000 years ago!

Situated about 10km from town, it is worth making a trip by taxi to see some interesting displays of ancient Bulgaria particularly the precious gold objects from approx 3500B.C. Had not appreciated that Bulgaria used to cover such a large area in former times. However the overall impression was of no timeline order to exhibits. Signage in English and perhaps... More

The collection is amazing and well organized. I had waited to see it because it was outside of the centre a bit but you should not wait or skip it. This will tell you as much about the long and rich history of Bulgaria as any place in the country.

This museum is a little out of the way - its not in central sofia but a very short (and cheap) taxi ride away and is definitely worth the trip! The museum is a soviet era building and is impressively large with nice grounds. The exhibits are mainly of prehistoric items found in Bulgaria of thracean origin but there are... More

This museum is a great example of the brutalism style. Looks terrible from the outside, but the interior is great and the exhibition is splendid!

Knowledgeable guide (member of the museum's staff) shed light on Bulgaria's founding history. Artefacts are explained in both English and Bulgarian. The view of the mountain is breath-taking.

This is a large modern museum which houses disparate collections from impressive archaeological remains to 20th century pictures, costumes, uniforms, guns, documents and endless items that are important to Bulgaria's recent past - even that under Communist rule. The collection of ancient gold jewelry is amazing. Relics of some of the nation's heroes and national figures have been carefully selected... More
