About
The Yellow Fortress or Yellow Bastion is a cannon fortress at the entrance of the "Walled City of Vratnik". It was built between 1727 and 1739 in area called Jekovac, close to the Jajce Barracks and the Jekovac water reservoir. It served as one of the defense points against the Austro-Hungarian troops in 1878, now a popular spot for sunsets & panoramic views of Sarajevo.

Go for the view of the city
The yellow fortress is a great area to view the city. When I visited it was cold and foggy. However I could see the potential when it is not. The area has a few benches to sit and enjoy the evening and, there is also one small building on the compound. Other than this nothing else is of interest there. The main reason to visit is for the view. Enjoy..

    Spectacular view
Alice and I climbed quite the way to the top (it wasn't awful to be fair, I've climbed worse) but the view was so worth it. We sat and stared from the top for quite a while, taking in the view. It was a great place to catch the sunset, and we could see so much from the top: the mountainous backdrop, the graveyards, the skyscrapers, the Old Town, the hilltop villages...wow.

    Great view, peaceful place
It was 11am when we decided to go up, it was hot and we had no idea that we had quite a hill to climb, but when we started, giving up was not an option. And it was worth sweating a little...that view, that peace, nice coffee, classical music from the cafe... Perfect! It was hard for us to leave.

    Not really a fortress
More like a walled outpost/defense tower. Great views of the city. Also has cafe. If you enjoy panoramic views, definitelly a must. Uphill walk from the Sarajevo City Hall. You pass some interesting neighborhoods and a cemetery.

Great viewpoint, ascend via moving cemetery.Cafe at top,no alcohol. Please leave no litter!Worth the climb.Quiet on visit
4/7/24 Thursday late afternoon (& cafe) We three middle aged guys from London we wandering around the old town and decided to go uphill a bit to work off a hearty late lunch. We found the profound and moving muslim cemetery, containing many of the casualties from the 92-96 seige, climbing up the hill. I searched for a cafe with a view higher up and found one on gglmps so the climb would have a drink at the end. I saw this mini for from below and headed up along the cemetery path and steps to find they peterred out and there was no gate at the top just under the fortress! We managed to get over the railings with no difficulty and met an Irish couple coming down who said there was a cafe above in the fort. Hurrah! But it was nowhere near the one on gglmps. Up we went, round the back and up the ramp into the 'fortress' which was quite small but there were about ten tables by the edge and a plain cafe set back. I grabbed a table as it was quite busy, my friends joining me. The views were worth beers climb I went on to ask the young man what the prices were and he said 5 for coffee and soft drinks, 4 for espresso and water. He gave me the wifi password to use to look up the qr code on the tables for the detailed prices. Unfortunately the website was very very dark with a faint coca-cola advert. It was useless as no further links possible. I ordered two Bosnian coffees and a sparkling water and paid the 14 by card which was useful (as ATMs are so expensive if you go to the worst ones - Union is the best at 10 per transaction). He said he would deliver the drinks. I took the small fizzy water back to the table for my friend and we enjoyed the view and ambiance, whilst checking home on the net. A group of Chinese tourists arrived and suddenly it all got much busier, they did not stay for drinks though. There was a steady flow of people to see the view and a few to drink. There was no alcohol. The coffees came served in the traditional way with a very hot copper plate underneath. The waiter offered to clean the table and returned with a cloth. Unfortunately the plates were so hot I could not pick them off the table and as he scrubbed the table the coffee spilt over my fresh on shorts...oops! He apologised, all was forgiven as I rinsed the stain with some of the water. The coffee was good and supplied with large glasses of tap water which was good too. We tried to log into the WiFi but it did not work at all. At 16:55 there was the amplified cacophony of Call to Prayers from the surrounding mosques, the first time we had heard them properly in two days here. We were in the suburbs. There was no music supplied by the cafe which actually meant you could hear the nearby bird song. We left happy and content to return to town down the long and winding road.

yellow fortress is the place many locals go to see sunset over Sarajevo old town / city. as a result, parking can be packed. but everybody just continue piling their cars as much as they can along the side of the road

there is also a white fortress about 7 min drive, further up the hill. you can also see sunset from here but the fortress itself is not open till that late, so you will be standing outside the fortress gate.

I was in town for business, so one afternoon I took a run up to the Yellow Fortress. The big challenge I had was there were not a lot signs pointing you to the location, thankfully maps on my phone worked. Once you arrive you will find some remains that offer a beautiful view down to the city. There was not a little to see the ruins, but to get up high and be able to see down into the city and valley is worth the walk up the hill.

The walk up is quite energy consuming but the view over the city is worth the effort. There is not too much left of the fortress but you can imagine the value. Quite depressing the size of the different cemeteries for the death of the siege of Sarajevo.

The Fortress is an old defensive Fortress on the east side of Sarajevo. I don't think you can go inside, but you can go the top of it, where there is food for sale and the main attraction, beautiful views out over the entire city. We visited as part of a van tour, meaning we didn't have to walk there; it's a pretty good distance, mostly uphill, from the center of town. We love to get birds-eye views of locations, so really appreciated the opportunity to spend about 15 minutes on top of the fortress looking around and taking photos.

The Yellow Bastion is a former cannon fortress at the entrance of the Vratnik. It was built between 1727 and 1739, the fortress served as one of the defensive strong points against Austro-Hungary. The fortress is now a popular lookout point and drinking spot with a bar on site. The bastion provides sweeping views down to the river. As others have mentioned, it’s quite a challenging walk up.

Constructed in the early to mid 1700s, this little fortress has seen some interesting events. The Parapet is open and accessible to the public, however, there is no railing. Towards the rear is a working cafe and there are tables all around the site. The view from this fortress is spectacular, looking over the majority of the city.

Good spot to visit for the excellent views over the city. There isn't much to inform you about the history of the site, so come for the views foremost. There is a cafe for a coffee refresh after the walk up the hill (which isn't arduous).
