The second highlighted the little known fact of the killing of gypsys as part of the Holocaust. Well worth a visit.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 7 November 2023
- Pioneer048561779011 contributionOverview of post-Yugoslav democratisation process and conflictThe top section of the museum looks at the difficult post-Yugoslavia democratisation process for all republics in an insightful and unbiased way with all exhibits in English and Bosnian. Ideal for those interested in the post-Communist 90s in Europe. The section on the siege of Sarajevo is being revamped and lacking order, but interesting nonetheless. The bottom section on WW2/Walter is mostly in just Bosnian language.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 August 2024
- Azra2 contributionsAmazing! A place to be in SarajevoI went to the History Museum with some frends to buy a copy of a new book on Tito and take a quick look and ended up staying there for five hours. I was amazed at how much had been done there and how interesting the exhibitions were. The exhibition on the Siege of Sarajevo felt like travelling in time and was completely heart-wrenching. At moments, I felt like I was back there, in the war-time Sarajevo. There is so much to see and learn, to experience. Another exhibition that I really liked was the Labyrinth of the 90s, which uses different media to present the life and the phenomena of the 90s in former Yugoslavia. Loved it! It's a visiting exhibition, so be quick if you want yo see it. We also saw the exhibition titled "Wer ist Walter? Topography of antifascist resistance in BiH". Just as amazing as the first two. It's an party outdoor exhibition and very interesting and educational in a light and inovative way. We were pampered by three different museum workers, each guiding us through a different section. They took their time, explained a lot and told numerous stories behind the exhibits. I'll definitely keep a closer look on the activities of the History Museum in Sarajevo and will visit every time I'm in the city.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 September 2024
- Emilija D1 contributionWhere history comes alive! The History Museum is a must-visit every time I come to Sarajevo. I look forward to seeing its growth and progress year after year. I am still deeply impressed by the current exhibitions they offer. I saw so many wonderful and important details, but a visit of just a few hours wasn’t enough to take it all in. A truly rich and comprehensive museum. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Sarajevo. It’s a place where history truly comes alive, thanks to the remarkable work of everyone involved. Bravo to the entire team!Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 September 2024

The space itself is fascinating: it is in itself a museum of what happened 30 years ago. 2 good that it remains so, with open wounds in a living, open public space. The ideal space for the extraordinary Sound Lifeline exhibition: a perfect example of a site-specific exhibition and installation.

It seemed to me like a building with the capacity to be a good museum, but the collection leaves something to be desired, as it focuses mainly on the period of the Bosnian civil war and the siege of Sarajevo, although there are other scattered pieces, such as the friendly Olympic Games mascot. from Sarajevo. The pieces I saw are interesting. The entrance to the museum maintains the memory of war, in the broken stairs and bullet holes. If it still exists, I recommend purchasing the book “Sarajevo, the longest siege” in the museum store.

We expected to get a good overview of BiH history and emphasis on topics related to the war. Unfortunately the museum was a collection of occasional small exhibitions, with several of them lacking English language. Overall quality of the exhibitions was poor and outside exhibition together with the exterior was left without maintenance. Only highlight was a photo exhibition of buildings that were destroyed in the war and later reconstructed. We strongly suggest the national museum instead.

This museum should be called The Siege of Sarajevo Museum. It’s the only topic they cover and they do a very good job of it.
We went here expecting a history of the country, however, and were disappointed. We had been to other museums covering the Siege and the war and weren’t that interested in seeing more on the subject. It’s a shame that there’s no museum dedicated to the history of the country.

The guy on reception was so unbelievably rude. First he left me stood there for 5 minutes and completely ignored me, then the admission was 7 marks and he said he didn't have any change from 20 marks, which I don't believe for a second. So, I never went in. Museum looks like a dump from the outside, go to the history museum next door it's good and don't waste your time with this.

Impressive example of a modern history museum (compared to the rest of Sarajevos museums) with excellent exhibitions on Gastarbeiter, migration and different narratives in history. All exhibitions displayed a high scientific and aesthetic standard in cooperation with well known research institutions.

Very interesting about the siege of Sarajevo. There is also a heartbreaking video with refugees from Bosnia in one of the rooms. The fact that the museum is situated just at the Sniper alley ads to the experience. Very friendly staff too.

Hi
I visited the History Museum 18 months ago and am hoping to find out the titles of the documentaries played. I was discussing the siege of Sarajevo with my 13 year old English students and they really wanted to know more about the events. If I am able to get hold of the documentaries, I intend on showing them to my students.
Thanks in advance
Connie
