The National Opera and Ballet Theatre is a beautiful and very traditional building. The building is well-maintained and/or has ‘recently’ been renovated with the quality of the seats being good. Add to that the relatively low price (we paid around $10 for reasonably good tickets) and it makes for a delightful and entertaining evening.

So why not an ‘Excellent’ rating? For that the quality of the Opera was just not good enough. Note: non-Russian speakers should make sure they know the story-line of the opera.

The Belarus Opera strongly resembles its Sovietish roots, yet is really a beautiful edifice. Contrary to its bigger Moscow brother this one is circular, set in a nice central park.
Our hotel was very close to it, so we passed by several times. Unfortunatelly, during our 2 nights stay on one night were no performances, while for the other tickets were sold out.
Looking for them at the counter I saw incredibly cheap tickets for performances, so I'd advise booking ahead.

Amazing building, just stunning. Different from other Operas around the world, anyway super interesting, and maybe mainly for this reason. You just cannot miss a visit here, if possible for you come and see one piece.

We were only in Minsk for 5 days, but were lucky enough to buy tickets for the Bolshoi Ballet. We saw Don Quixote! The lead male dancer was absolutely fabulous as were the gipsy girl , matador and his lady. the comic figures were alo excellently performed, but the male lead, stole the show. It was lovely to hear the cries of "Bravo" fom the audience who all rose to their feet to applaude!

The Opera House lies in a large park near to the river and is a bit of a walk from the centre, but buses run close by. Buying tickets can be awkward, check when the Box Office is open with the Tourist Office or if you or someone can speak Russian - phone. Ticket prices are very reasonable.
We saw Yefgeny Onegin (Eugene Onegin) in a beautiful setting which the Opera House provides. The singing was incredible, the dancers from the Corps de Ballet staggering, orchestra tremendous - in total they gave this Tchaikovsky opera a performance which would be difficult to see bettered elsewhere.
If you think you don't like opera (or ballet) then spend a small amount of money to buy tickets and go and be enthralled by the amazing ability of the performers.

We went there this afternoon to try and book one of the operas for the next few days., and were informed that it is always shut during the entire August. We were very disappointed as this was one of the few things we were so looking forward to., we do of course realise it was beyond their control and not their fault. We would at least liked to have seen it from inside because we are given to believe it is spectacular. They had clearly displayed forthcoming events ( which could be booked) for September, October and November. The outside was immaculately maintained, lots of greenery, seating and tasteful pieces of sculptures.
