The island is really small, but has a ton of charm with some neat statues. There's a lot of history depicted there, and I highly recommend visiting it.

One of the historical and famous places in Minsk. It symbolizes the memory of the Soviet internationalist soldiers who performed their military duty in Afganistan.

The monument is to those fallen as a result of the Afghanistan war. It's very peaceful with benches that have a good view of downtown Minsk across the water.

We learned so much about some episodes of the history that usually are not in School books. Another war, soldiers fallen.. must not be forgotten.

This is a rather sad landmark for the Soldiers that have passed in war. Very meaningful and touching design with stunning detail. Seeing the statues of the nuns morning for the lost creates an emotional and deeply moving experience.

I visited here end of Autumn when there was snow and ice everywhere. There are a couple monuments. Quiet area. I could imagine this being a nice place to relax, have a picnic, and enjoy the views on a warm day.

It is a walking distance if you staying central of Minsk . It has a beautiful monument of the nuns for the memory of the soldiers who were killed in Afghan war. It is a beautiful island surrounded by a river over looking the main shopping centre and double tree Hilton. There is a big park and lots more to see nearby this place .

This is a must see but be prepared to feel emotional. The faces on the .others are deeply moving. The crying angel is thought provoking.

Island of Tears is an artificial island set in the center on a meander of the Svislach river. It's a memorial to many fallen Belarus during the Afghan war. The island (or at least a part of it) is made of Afghan soil which weeping mothers brought back from their son's graves.
The memorial occupies the central island's spot, on a small hill just after crossing the bridge. It's in a form of a chapel with larger than life mourning mothers on all 4 sides. Inside the open air chapel the soldiers names are inscribed.
Beside the memorial is a weeping angel crying he couldn't save them, and Afghan provinces stone markers where they died are scaterred around.
Apart from the sad side, the island offers best views of Minsk downtown area all around.

When we hear of the "russian" army in Afganistan we do not realise that they sent troops from the sattellite soviet states to fight the war! This memorial is for the families of over 500 Belarusian young men who died there. It is a very poignant memorial with larger than life statues of weeping mothers holding photos of their sons and clutching younger children. It is well worth visiting.
