- May14 contributionsGreat local experience!Papeete Market is a must-visit for local goods and delicious produce. For the best experience, go early on a Sunday morning (before 9am) for unique food options. Elvis' stall is a standout, offering an array of local products like monoi oils, perfumes, soaps, lotions, vanilla, coffee, and more. Make sure you find him! I found great souvenirs here and excellent mosquito repellents. Elvis, the vendor, is incredibly kind and genuinely helpful. His recommended sprays were effective, and the tamanu oil worked wonders on my mosquito bites. A definite recommendation for all visitors, especially those prone to mosquito bites!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023

We bought a few things for my granddaughters.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 December 2023
- art-scubaLos Altos, California546 contributionsExpensive and closes earlyIt is a good place to buy flowers but the pearl shops were overpriced. The place closes at noon on Dec 30th and was not planning to open up until New Year's week. It was open for a short time in the evening too. Nice to walk by.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 January 2024
- TAHITITIMMelbourne, Australia322 contributionsGreat place to see local produce and get your giftsThis place is a must to visit, to see all the offers from the island, good place to buy your souvenirs, even pearls, good prices. You can also observe local life if you come early enough. it is an open market, no aircon of course, so could be hot inside during wet season.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 February 2024
- Sm00thtravelPort Huron, Michigan242 contributionsShopping Experience!Located a few blocks from the pier so it's easy to visit and walkable from cruise pier. One section had fish and fresh produce which was fun to see. The rest was typical Tahitian souvenirs-clothing, jewelry ,trinkets. We did not buy as we were just starting a cruise. I found that the prices about the same as in the islands but there was better selection here. There's a lot of shopping around the market and you can buy everything you need. Basic items were high due to most items being imported.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2024
- ROCruiserClaremont, California4,566 contributionsColorful MarketCan't miss this if walking around downtown area. A busy but clean place to shop and eat. All the fresh fish and fruits looked tempting. Souvenirs can be had here with plenty of vendors selling different wares. It's also colorful so a good place for photos.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 26 February 2024
- Hawaiian CanuckVancouver, Canada2,094 contributionsWorth checking out for the variety, but shop elsewhere. This is like a giant flea/craft market mixed with a food fair and fish/meat market. Great for locals buying groceries and lunch. For tourists, it’s good for a look see but don’t buy. The prices and quality made it not worth it. I found better quality items around local markets across Tahiti and at the main Tahiti tourism office and at the Tahiti national museum. Definitely don’t buy black pearls here. One thing that they do have (that I did buy) was flower garlands ( leis in Hawaii and heis in Tahiti) from the numerous small hei stands around the outer edge of the market (outside the gates). Fantastic quality, especially the head or hat heis which are much more ornate than what we can buy at similar markets in Hawai’i.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 11 April 2024
- Charlie-BMurrells Inlet, South Carolina102 contributionsGood place to shop in the downtownThis is a nice open-air market in downtown Papeete. It has tables set up and run by individuals, store, operated by businesses, and a few eating places thrown in. We found that most, even the individual vendors accepted credit cards. There are some bargains, but you will want to comparison shop.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2024
- Linda NPeoria, Arizona62 contributionsThis was a great experience! This is a huge market with many vendors for jewelry and clothing. Good prices for most things and lots of variety. Black pearls are available for a reasonable price. There is also a large selection of local food.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024
- neeratravelerSan Francisco, California243 contributionsGood for a short visitThe Municipal market is worth a visit and in my case a short visit. It has a little bit of everything from exotic flowers, fake flowers to shell jewelry, other artifacts etc.. There are various food items. One can spend a lot of time here if you are so inclined but I had enough in about half an hour.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 31 July 2024

I could not wait to go to the market after reading all the reviews. What a disappointment. The souvenirs were overpriced and many were the same as those I saw in the corner grocery store and other outlets for less. It was not clean. I did not go to the restroom, but my husband did and he said the restroom was not clean either. They do have some food booths downstairs that offer what I would call street food, which was fairly inexpensive and good.

This is a fun market with many booths with food, crafts, clothes and more, all local Tahitians. While it is "touristy," the place is packed at lunch time, as the folks working in the area converge. Prices for souvenirs are not terrible, but don't buy your pearls here, unless you are an expert and able to discern quality on your own. You are far better off going to the main pearl market along the main street.

We had a few hours to kill before our ferry to Moorea so we walked over from our hotel. Hours everywhere online were slightly wrong so we wandered a bit more in the area for 30 mins.
When it did open you could tell that a lot of the stalls were still getting up and running, which was fine with us! Lots of fish and fruit stands. A few bakery spots along the sides. Upstairs is a cafe that wasn’t open yet so we didn’t get to have any coffee.
Grabbed some baked items from one of the stands and it was all delicious! The banana bread pudding and banana empanada were our favorites.
Also a few places selling pua roti, the Tahitian version of char sui pork. Some had long lines and smelled delicious but we had found a tiny hole in the wall a block away also selling some so we had our fill.
Only thing we couldn’t find was fresh baked plain baguettes even though we saw people walking around with them!

Perfect way to spend the time between an early AM arrival and the Moorea ferries. Our driver dropped us near the market and we enjoyed seeing the vendors selling flowers, fresh produce, souvenirs, and more. We left room in our bags and filled that space with some fresh veg and local fruits for hotel snacks! If you're spending time before the 10 AM ferry, after 7 on a Saturday the cafes, pharmacies and general stores are opening around the perimeter so you can grab anything you couldn't pack or forgot to-- sunscreen, bug spray, odds and ends. There are additional vendors outside the building with clothing, generally inside it's souvenirs, flowers, produce and fish. Visited Saturday.

I've been to Papeete twice before and never when the market was open. Finally I got there. My daughter and I had a terrific time exploring both floors. Since this is COVID time, everyone was wearing a mask and it was easy to stay socially distant and it was not crowded at all. We loved all the choices for jewelry, fruits & veggies, snacks, clothing, and so on. Had a great experience.

We were initially disappointed to find the market was closed early however we managed to find time the next morning to visit and we’re glad we did. The market was bustling with locals selling everything from fresh fish to pearls, fragranced oils, carvings, flowers and everything in between.
Definitely a good place to do your souvenir shopping and buy your pearls.
Some vendors take card however definitely bring cash.

I thought this was a "must stop" for souvenirs, affordable pearls and trinkets to bring home. I found the most affordable pearls in the stalls outside of the building. The food stalls offer up some extremely affordable coffee and bites to eat. I arrived fairly early, around 7am which made parking easy but a lot of the shops hadn't opened yet or where setting up as I left.

I heard that the shops/merchants/souvenirs are not open Sunday mornings. Just the fish and produce. Anybody know?

Do the merchants (T-shirts & food) on the second level take credit cards (e.g. AMEX)?
Written 23 July 2020
Some do and some don’t take Visa. Sorry, but that’s the situation. And If you use a charge card you’ll lose some negotiating advantage.

Hi Cationista. What would you like to know about this attraction?
Where do you park for the market?
Thank you.
Written 2 February 2019
It is difficult. If possible, take a taxi. There are lots of attractions around the market place so do some sightseeing.

Papeete markets are a worthwhile visit and the flowers are a amazing I think they are open every day but not sundays
we also brought some quality purchases from Hinano retail shop ( which is the local beer and not bad at all ) in Papeete

Hola!

Hi,
Does anyone know a ballpark price for the wrap around sarongs? drinks etc, and do you have to pay in xpf or do they take USD?
Thank you,
Written 22 August 2018
Sorry, we weren't looking for sarongs so we don't know the price. I am not sure about currency but we were told to take xpf by cruise ship staff.
