Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We bought our tickets online from Direct Ferries - this was pretty straight forward I’m not sure why people have advised against it.

We chose the 7am slot with Coloniaexpress. This cost around £41 each and included a bus transfer to the ferry.

On the confirmation email it advises passengers to arrive 90 minutes before departure- however we decided this was in reference to the ferry so we arrived at the bus station (Tres Cruces) at 6am (food stalls are open then).

The bus did leave half an hour early so make sure you do get there with time to spare!

After the bus we went through customs which was a quick bag check and then we got our passports stamped. We were directed upstairs where there were two queues- however only ours (on the left) had a screen above with the ferry company on. This made us and fellow passengers confused/worry that both queues were for the same ferry and that we were in the priority queue (ours was significantly shorter).

However the other queue was for a different ferry and all was well. We queued for quite a long time and then we were directed onto the ferry, which was pretty big and had plenty of seats. We arrived in Argentina in under 2 hours (much faster than it says on your ticket).

Overall a pretty easy journey!

we traveled from Colonia to Montevideo (Tres Cruces) and then onward to Punta del Este. Buses were on-time, even though the Colonia to Tres Cruces route had a lot of stops. Tres Cruces is conveniently co-located with a amll, that includes a food court.

Shops are great, large bus station easy to navigate. We took the Turil Bus line out to Colonia and it was super easy. Clean comfortable buses.

My gf and I took the 6:50am bus from Montevideo to Colonia with Turil bus line. We bought our tickets at the Montevideo station in the AM - we purchased return tickets and selected a 4pm return time from Colonia back to Montevideo (fastest bus). There were a few quick stops made, but very efficient. This was a perfect amount of time for a day trip. The Turil bus was very comfortable with reclining seats and had free wi-fi too.

Uruguay's bus system is surprisingly robust and nice. The Tres Cruces terminal in Montevideo is the beating heart of the system and it's pretty nice as far as bus stations go. There's a big mall upstairs with the terminal on the lower level. The terminal itself has lots of seating and a bunch of small shops for picking up snacks and drinks for the trip. The place is clean and well laid out. It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

You can get bus tickets here to go pretty much anywhere in Uruguay, and tickets are reasonably priced ($12 USD from Montevideo to Colonia, for example, or $8 from Montevideo to Minas). The terminal is pretty massive, and there's an upstairs level that's a mall. Downstairs, you'll find restaurants, cafes, and a tourist info center, with helpful staff members.

Easy, safe, clean, convenient...

This is the main bus terminal in Montevideo. It's pretty busy and crowded, but reasonably clean, safe and organized. A good place to buy some last moment souvenirs.

I LEFT CABO DEL DIABLO AT 02.00, ONLY 1 1/2 HOUR SLEEP. ARRIVED 3 CRUCES 06.30 TO BUY MY 120-GBP ONWARD TICKET TO ASUNCION PARAGUAY FROM EGA BUS OFFICE OPENING AT 08.00. NOT ABLE TO RESERVE OR BUY OVER PHONE OR ON THEIR SITE BECAUSE DOES NOT CATER FOR FOREIGN PASSPORT INFO. WENT FOR COFFEE AND SNACK. LUCKY WAS A SEAT AND BOUGHT TICKET FOR DEPARTURE 13.00. ONCE A WEEK ONLY. SAT, RESTED, ANOTHER COFFEE AND SNACK ETC. THEN AWARE SECURITY PEOPLE SPYING ON ME PLUS A GIRL IN A KIOSK RELAYING THEM INFO ON PASSENGERS. SECURITY ASKED TO SEE TICKET AND SAW 13.00. THEN FOLLOWED WHEREVER I WENT INCLUDING TOILETS WHERE I HEARD THE SECURITY MAN TELLING TOILET CARER 'AT 13.00 WE ARREST HIM'. USING WALKIE TALKIES AND LOOKING DOWN FROM UPPER FLOOR. AM JUST WAITING 6 HOURS FOR A BUS IN A BUS STATION. MY TOTAL JOURNEY WAS 35 HOURS TO PARAGUAY. SECURITY SHOULD GET REAL 'ON THE ROAD' PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND NOT MENACE FARE PAYING PASSENGERS. 27 MARCH 2023.
