Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

While we only hear for the half day tour this was included because of its beauty. Abandoned and abused by transients. Sofitel came in and renovated it. The was much to do but surprisingly much of the interior decorations were still intact before they started the renovation

We did not stay at the hotel but we've taken lots of pictures of it and it's a regular stop on many tours. It probably helps that it is a casino as well as a hotel. You can't really miss the hotel as you walk, cycle or drive along the Rambla. It marks the beginning of the Carraso neighborhood of Montevideo and it is quite the photo opportunity.
With the columns, it looks like it could have been in Athens or Rome.
It was built in 1921 and was the luxury hotel of Montevideo. It fell into disrepair and was closed in the 1990's only to reopen in 2013.
You should visit it, even if you are just going to take a photo.

This was the first time I stayed at this hotel and my expectation was high as this was a Sofitel hotel and theoretically was the best hotel in Montevideo. Apart from the grand facade and beautiful lobby, the room was relatively small and designed in a strange way. The service was not as good as expected. During one of the five nights I stayed there, my room was not cleaned until I informed the reception at 6pm. However, the restaurant 1921 is a fine dining place, where the service and food quality are excellent.

The hotel is very grand outside and the lobby is stunning. My room however was quite worn out. Light switches were broken, there were large cracks in the wall and it could have done with a lick of paint. Quite disappointing given the Sofitel brand and the class of hotel. My room was supposed to be an upgrade but it was small so I fount know what the standard rooms are like. Service at breakfast was very slow and unsmiling despite being quiet.

There is No doubt that this is the best hotel in town to stay; maybe not perfect but the best. The construction is original and really pretty, the rooms spacious and the service cordial. The spa is also worth it and the prices fantastic

My response to the Sofitel is that it's weirdly unsatisfying. The building is beautiful and well renovated, and our river-view room was pleasant enough. And the breakfast buffet is good. But for all of that, the hotel feels very confining. There is almost no access to the outside. Our room had a Juliet balcony, but we couldn't step out there because the french doors are set to only open 3-4 inches. (Maybe the balcony is structurally unsound?) The large hotel grounds could be nice, but the only outside access is through the spa to the small pool area, where one finds mostly dilapidated wood-and-fabric lounges that are (literally) threadbare and too uncomfortable to use. (Sofitel should be ashamed that these have not been replaced.) And even if you nab a lounge that is usable, there is no shade and not an umbrella in sight. Yes, there is comfie lounging inside the pretty spa area (where one is greeted with "bonjour" from the French staff), but if you (like us) want some fresh air, you will be disappointed. I understand one can cross the road to the Rambla and beach, but there's no shade there and, besides, sometimes it's just nice to spend time using the hotel that you're paying for. It's as if they've given no thought to making the grounds pleasant and available. It's not that this is a bad hotel, but Sofitel could really do much better.

I travel frequently to Montevideo on my way to Punta Del Este. I normally stay at the Sheraton which is a bit of an institution but ever since the majestic Sofitel opened I couldn’t wait to stay there. I’m writing this review mainly for the people that work there as they are so welcoming and as someone travelling alone made me feel right at home. To Martin and the team a huge thank you. The hotel is as you would expect a five star hotel to be. The only thing I would fault it on is the decor and the limited breakfast buffet selection. Really can’t fault anything else and recommend it highly for its grandeur and its facilities. If you don’t mind being further away from the city centre, this is the place to stay. Make sure to say hello to the team. I genuinely think they are the best there is!

Jaw-droppingly beautiful. This kind of elegance doesn't really exist in the world anymore. We saw the building from the road and wondered what it was. Couldn’t believe it was actually our hotel. We arrived from New York at 10 a.m., too early to check in, but Martin and Rodrigo, at the front desk, could not have been more welcoming. They found a room for us immediately -- a beautiful junior suite with a breathtaking view of the Atlantic. But our experience at the restaurant, 1921, was truly singular. Frederico, the sommelier, introduced us to the brilliant wines of the region. Each more complex and delicious than the next. Each time we returned for dinner, he would greet us with a taste of something amazing that we would never have considered. Micaela and Guillermo served us as well and, again, made each visit exceptional. I know it sounds strange to name them all, but that's how warm and personable they all are. I guess you can tell we were impressed. Don’t miss an opportunity to let them introduce you to the charms of Uruguay.

Este casino é grande igual ao do Conrad em Punta del Este? A entrada é gratuita? Até que horas pode ir?
Written 2 April 2018
O cassino é a cereja do bolo!
