    Museum visit Andes 1972
Although I thought I knew the story of the crash and survivors from the book and movie. “Alive”, this museum offered so much more information. A lot about the individuals aboard and their short lives or survival story. I found it very moving. Highly recommend

    Time well spent.
I read this inspirational book many times and recall when this all happened. My visit to this museum was like returning to visit old friends. It made me reflect on how these people helped form my mental and physical strength, and how I Incorporated their experiences into my sense of proportion. Reading more about the crash victims and their fates, seeing the tastefully prepared displays and studying the timeline in the museum was a very good way to spend a few hours.

    Interactive, detailed and informative
I went to this really interesting museum/memorial today about the Andes plane crash of the rugby team where they ate their dead friends. They were so young 18/19 years old. It was interactive and you could see what they did each day. Including things like how the hideous 1970s curtains turned out to be a source of insulation and how rugby discipline and fitness helped them survive. People who knew the mountains said it was impossible to survive or escape so it was lucky they didn't know it was impossible!

Such a well curated collection of the entire event..
Such a well curated collection of the entire event. All exhibits had both Spanish and English translations. The space was well thought out and we quickly lost track of time as we were so absorbed by the loving restoration of the event and the effect it had on Uruguay

Museo Andes 1972 - Must-See Museum In Montevideo
Terrific museum documenting the disastrous crash of Flight 571 on October 13, 1972. Excellent documentation, including actual artifacts of the event. Detailed explanations of the 72 day calamity and intimate profiles of those involved, all handled with respect and reverence. The museum is a sensitive and poignant tribute to the tragic events and victims of Flight 571. Important and educational highlight of our stay in Montevideo.

    Very informative, interesting artifacts
Museum isn't huge but has a lot of information, and some artifacts, packed in. Start in the basement floor with the 15 minute video (subtitles in English or Portuguese) and work your way up. Entrance fee has to be paid in cash. You do not need a tour to visit, there was not a line when we went on a Monday afternoon.

    Outstanding museum! Don’t miss it!
Excellent museum, a “must-see” in Montevideo. It tells the gripping story of how 16 people survived a plane crash, avalanche and 72 days in the frigid Andes. The story of heroism, team work, leadership and resilience deserves your attention. Don’t miss this outstanding museum!

The incredible story of death and survival against all odds of a 1972 plane crash in the high Andes.
The story of the Uruguayan plane crash in the high Andes in 1972, and the survival of so many victims over so many weeks in a forbidding environment is compelling and memorable. The artifacts and associated materials bring the story to life, and the power of the human spirit and will to survive make an indelibly lasting impression. If this story were written as a novel, no publisher would print it, as being too incredibly far-fetched. But it is all too true. A must-see for any visitor to Montevideo!

    Visit to the Andes Museum
My admission was 10am, but I was early at 09.15am and they saw me at the door and let me in. First I watched a video and then looked around the exhibition. It was very moving and brought me to tears. I am so glad that I took the time to go to this museum

Interesting museum but could use better organization
I really enjoyed my visit here, but I don't know whether it would be for everyone. As a teenager I'd read a book (Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors) and it made enough of an impression on me that I still remember a lot of it. Although the plane crash at the heart of the story took place in the Andes, most of the people on it were rugby players (and their friends and family) from the Uruguay national team. Although I already knew the overview of what happened from the book, I thought the museum could have been organized better. It had a great wealth of detail, artifacts, first-person quotes, and other information about the crash, but someone who didn't already know the overall story would probably feel pretty lost. It was definitely worth going, but I'd recommend getting context from the book (or I believe there was also a movie) in advance. There are timed tickets that can be purchased in advance, but we weren't sure about our timing so just stopped by and didn't have any issue getting in. There was no overall tour, although the basement had a movie playing which may have given more of an overview (but was in Spanish, which I don't speak well enough to be able to really watch). There are restrooms, but they are small and not very nice.

Who ever goes to a museum where the curator wanders about and offers insightful info? We quite enjoyed our two hour visit to relive one of the great miracles of the last 50 years. I especially enjoyed that this in not your typical museum of history or art in general, but rather a museum which emphasizes a particular event in history. Good English descriptions, unlike some other Montevideo museums.

I had forgotten about this story . A compelling recount of those that died and those that survived. Brilliantly put together. How did these survivors make it off the mountain, this museum will never be able to explain this . Miracles do happen.
I was impressed by how much detail there was provided and we spent nearly 2 hours here.

This museum, which displays the strength and courage of the human soul, will leave you speechless and force you realize how fragile life really is.
An inspiring story of survival.
We have seen the movie "Alive" read the book, and now have been to this outstanding museum which brought everything to life, and more importantly, pays tribute to ALL the people on the flight that fateful day.
The staff at the Museum were exceptional providing additional informational and insight.
This museum is not to be missed.

This little museum is a Montevideo do-not-miss, that documents in detail the moving drama of the 1972 mishap that caught the attention of the world. It's a uniquely Uruguayan as well as a universally human story. Worth your visit.

I unfortunately didn't get to spend as much time at this museum as I would have liked to but I enjoyed the brief time that I did have there. The exhibits were very interesting and the whole place worked well as both an educational facility and a memorial to the victims and survivors of the crash. I also liked the museum's approach of trying to relate its extraordinary subject matter to lessons that could apply to everyday life, such as the importance of setting small goals to help with completing seemingly overwhelming tasks. One of the museum staff members (all of whom were very friendly and helpful) explained to me that they emphasize this aspect in educational programs for children who visit the museum.

The Andes Museum is one of the best small museums I have visited in a long time, and my visit was definitely one of the things I will remember most about Montevideo. The museum covers the true story of the 1972 Uruguayan plane crash in the Andes Mountains, the inspiring story of the 16 survivors, and the tragic and heartbreaking stories of the 24 men and women who lost their lives. The museum is very well-organized and clears up a number of misconceptions about the crash but it was the unexpected commentary and personal attention from the museum's founder that made visiting the museum a truly special experience. I spent far longer here than I expected to and the whole experience made me want to learn even more by reading books by some of the survivors. Highly recommended.

I've been interested in this crash for a long time, so I was interested to know there was a museum within blocks of where I am staying in Ciudad Vieja. The museum itself is well done, with a video about the crash, a day-by-day timeline, a few pieces from the original plane and many items of clothing, belongings and journals from the crash and the survivors. The founder of the museum is very nice and will answer any questions you may have.

I spent 3 hours at this museum which tells the details of this tragic incident in a very inspirational way. I arrived when they opened and had the English version of the introductory video all to myself and the rest of the museum mostly all to myself. The information is well organized and with English information as well which is whyI took advantage of this and took the time to read every detail of this incident which I remember happening as a teen. Questions were encouraged and answered. Highly recommend you visit.

As Karen Higgs (aka Guru'guay) writes: "if you only do one museum in Montevideo, do this one". This is a fantastic tribute to one man's (Jörg Thomsen) efforts to remember and learn from the experiences of childhood friends and neighbors who were on the plane.
If all you want to do is learn more about the event and the circumstances leading up to it, you will find it here.
If you also want to learn a great deal about the people involved - who they were and how this tragedy shaped them - you will find this here also.
This is a wonderful spot in a lovely city.
