The square isn't large, so it's hard to get a great view of the cathedral facade without standing right underneath it and craning your neck upward. We thought the interior of the cathedral was beautiful and worth stepping into. We try our best to find at least a couple of churches and cathedrals to check out in every city we visit. Glad we found this one. Very understated yet beautiful. As I think about it, the understated vibe is part of the charm.

Catedral de Montevideo is the main church in Montevideo. It occupies a prominent position in the old town on Plaza Matriz. The church was consecrated in 1804. It is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and to Saints Philip and James, the patron saints of Montevideo.
The exterior structure of the church contradicts the neoclassical structure inside, magnificent with its stained glass windows and ornate sculptures. There is one major altar, several side altars, memorials, and tombs of several of the former archbishops and bishops who served in the cathedral.
Regular Catholic services are held here, but there are also a lot of tourist visits. There was space for quiet prayer. The atmosphere was quite serene.

I stumbled onto this cathedral while on a walk through old town Montevideo. Catedral de Montevideo, the city’s oldest public building, was completed in 1799. It is not a huge or spectacular church but still a very pleasant place to visit. It has been declared a National Historic Landmark.

We had 15 minutes here on our cruise ship shore excursion, and that was plenty.
Catedral de Montevideo, the city’s oldest public building, was completed in 1799. Of note: it’s two domed bell towers and its unique copper-hued main altar.
It fronts on Plaza Matriz (see my review, “Pleasant plaza”).
Admission is free.

This is the main Catholic church in Montevideo. It is located across from Plaza Matriz-also known as the Plaza of the Constitution. Attended Mass here which was held in the chapel and not in the main part of the church. Unfortunately, Uruguayans are the least religious of the South American countries so the chapel was adequate for the amount of people attending. It has been proclaimed a National Historic Landmark-very ornamental interior and a beautiful architectural structure. See one of my photos for Mass times. Church open to visitors at other times also.

We enjoyed our own walk through the old city of Montevideo and stopped at the Cathedral, which is on Plaza de la Constitucion. The square isn't large, so it's hard to get a great view of the cathedral facade without standing right underneath it and craning your neck upward.

We were in Montevideo for a day during a recent cruise and instead of joining an organized tour, we decided to walk around town. A great decision on our part and the city is exceptionally easy to navigate and we got to see way more than the tour would have offered.
One of the places we stopped was here at the Cathedral of Montevideo. We spent about 45 minutes walking around the church, respectfully. The church is right off the city square in the old town and is exceptionally well maintained for a building of its age. The detail throughout the church was brilliant and everywhere you turned there was another plaque, tomb or dedication to someone else important in Uruguay's independent and colonial history. It also provided a nice, calm place to simply sit and take in all of our surroundings.
Definitely visit this church. You don't need a guide, entrance is fee and the setting is beautiful. Enjoy!

Not a particularly large cathedral this was neither overly ornate or ostentatious. The side altars are almost as impressive as the main altar itself with the dome with its stained glass windows. A really nice church.

It resembles the European cathedrals so you feel like "it's one more".
Located in the Sarandi in Old Town, one of the places that you have to go if doing the old town walk.
It is a nice place but not very big. Your interest level will determine how long you'll be inside.
There is no entrance fee.

As cathedrals go, this is one of the more understated ones. We didn’t aim to end up here but we found it as we walked around the old town. It is not very big and free to enter. There is a nice stained glass window to see and the altar is pretty.

Djalma, a catedral Metropolitana tem historia sim, se bem me lembro a atual edificação é a terceira erguida. Dentro da igreja tem relíquias sim, A pia batismal onde foi batizado Jose Artigas, documentos originais emoldurados. O mausoléu do Monsenhor Mariano Soler, primeiro arcebispo de Montevideo. E a padroeira é a Imaculada Conceição e aos Santos padroeiros da cidade San Felipe e Santiago. Acho que respondi duas questões. E boa viagem.

Elizabeth, você pode ir a Rio Branco? Se puder, lá d eve ter uma igreja matriz, com esses registros de batismo. Não deve ser de tão difícil acesso.
Caso não possa, seria bom contactar alguém de lá, que tenha disponibilidade para achar o que você precisa.

Hi, the mass is at 11.00 am Sunday. I remember because the ship arrived at 9.00 AM in Montevideo harbor.

I have been trying to find mass times online but am having no luck. I called, but my Spanish is not good enough. How can I find when Sunday Mass times are?
