Cruise ships dock very close to the market and old town. There are lots of shops featuring the works of local artisans and unique sculpture, jewelry and paintings. The streets are rich with sights and culture of this often overlooked but very welcoming country.

We didn't sign up for an excursion for this stop on our cruise. SO happy we decided to wing it on our own. Found alot of neat little shops and had a great meal at a little cafe - all within walking distance of the port. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

We spent a day in Montevideo and walked from the port into the centre down the main pedestrianised street. The port has a post office, Internet cafe (chargeable) and some modern industrial sculptures (worth a photo stop) all located in the entrance area. To get to the town you exit the port, cross the main road and walk one block into the town where the pedestrianised street begins. You then turn left and the street leads to Constitution Plaza where weekend flea markets are held and then onto Independence Plaza where the older part of the city ends and the newer part of the city begins. There are interesting shops, cafés, stalls and architecture along the way and we found the walk interesting & safe. Most local cafés offer free wifi - as does McDonalds located in Constitution Plaza.

Our cruise ship docked in Montevideo for one day and we decided to "do our own thing", primarily to visit the Botanical Gardens. Personnel in the Tourist Office near the dock were very helpful in explaining how to get there using local buses, and the bus drivers were equally helpful, telling us where to get off and how to reach a bus stop for the second bus, even though neither party could speak the others language! We saw several types of parakeets roaming wild in the Garden.
Upon our return to the city centre, we alighted at the Plaza Independence and walked back to the ship. Whilst we felt quite safe in Montevideo, we did hear of another couple who were mugged quite near the dock, so it is probably best to stick to the main thoroughfares.
It is worth venturing into the Central Market (near to the dock), particularly if you like meat. There are several "restaurants" which have large barbecue grills on which a variety of meat cuts and sausages etc are cooked to order. Beware - the portions are enormous!
Outside the Central Market are a number of souvenir stalls - one in particular had good value leather handbags for sale.
We certainly enjoyed our day in Montevideo.

Hi, youre planning to visit Montevideo and are looking for tours.
Well we arrived into the city by cruise ship and had a privete tour with bbq booked.
This tour started at $135 usd, and worked its way down as the number of people going increased. Eventually we ended up at $96.
Imagine my surprise when coming off the dock, there were cabs everywhere offering the same tour without bbq for $20 each for 4 persons.
Then after getting into the mini bus doing up our seat belts, we moved about 250mtrs and we were at the first attraction, the 2nd was another 300mtrs.
My suggestion to you is walk, or take a cab.
You can buy a sensational meal for a out $20 a head in that city.
Heres hoping that by us spending you can learn and save.
Good touring everyone.

When arriving at the port in Montevideo, I suggest you take a quick look around the port area, and then walk down the peatonel of Perez Castallano until you come to Calle Sarandi.
From here you can walk three blocks down to the Rumbla and the pier, where you can get a great perspective of the city and the Port and watch the locals fishing. Or you can turn left and walk past the many street stalls and cafes of the Old City, past the Cathedral at Plaza Matriz and continue on through the gatway to Plaza Independencia. Now you are in the centre of the city. Check out the fabulous Teatro Solis one block down towards the rumbla or continue straight ahead onto 18 de Julio to experience the shopping and hubub of Centro. Now you´ve seen the best of what Montevideo has to offer.
If you choose to eat in the Pueto del Mercado you will pay tourist prices far above that of other restaurants in the city.
It´s a beautiful city, so enjoy!

We were fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to know Montevideo during a short stop during our cruise around Cape Horn with Holland America. While it is certainly a "little worse for wear" it is a very charming place, with wonderful people and some great artists and artisans. I would highly recommend a meandering walk from the port through the streets, with stops at museums, art galleries and the like. The outdoor restaurants in the market by the port must be experienced! The wood-fired barbecues produce mouth-watering meats of all kinds and fabulous melted provolone cheese that pair well with wine recommended by attentive waiters.

This city was easy enough to do as long as you don't mind walking. We were pleasantly surprised at how clean it was and how proud the residents are of the restoration efforts. As with anywhere these days, you should be vigilant of your surroundings.
We took a free "shuttle" to one of the "leather factories" - essentially a store. After we perused the merchandise, we took off on our own with maps brought from home. There is a "hop on - hop off" tour bus that we saw in Plaza independencia.
We spent over an hour in the "Mercado de los Artesanos" in downtown (it's next to the Cineplex) which sold all sorts of merchandise including soaps, handmade jewelry, wood carvings, carvings from walnut shells, carving from orange peels, magnets, windchimes, candles, etc. The artisans are part of the cooperative. You go to each stall, choose the items you want, the vendor brings the goods to the central cashier and gives you a receipt. After you are done shopping, bring all your receipts to the cashier. All your purchases will be packaged and billed together. Credit cards accepted. The Mercado near the Port had a MUCH smaller selection.
We had a late lunch at the Port Market and opted for the local "chivito" sandwich. We ordered a platter with french fries but some folks just got the sandwich. There was a music band nearby that provided music which added to the experience.
This was a nice port and we enjoyed seeing the old and newer parts of Montevideo.

This was a pleasant surprise for us when stopping here on a cruise. Many excursions were long ones on buses, so we opted for a walking tour of the city. It was a wonderful way to see the downtown with a mixture of squares, oldish and newish buildings. Photobugs: bring your zoom lens with the wide angle. Many opportunities exist for wide angles in the squares plus zooming for details and/or people shots.

I had a day in Montevideo in February, 2012 on a cruise. Fortunately I had a guide waiting for me at the port. He took us all over the city, We saw the cathedral, the town hall, the Teatro Solis and the Plaza Independencia. He introduced us to the very friendly people, all of whom share their Mate Jar with one another. This is a stimulant, said to be mostly caffeine, that they carry around and share with anyone. We did not partake. The city was probably worth more than a day but we had to leave.

We will be stopping in Montevideo in November for a few hours from our cruise. Are the main attractions within easy walking distance or should we book an organised tour please? Not keen on using public transport! Bit nervous so would prefer to walk but not sure of distances.

Mil Gracias
