AMAZING
Mar. 2021
Another UNESCO site with wow factor. we were fortunate to have a lovely clear sky for our visit. Rain had been treated but stayed away until we left. when entering the park make the climb to the left as you enter as after that it is a one way system and cannot get back to those terraces. Our tour guides were excellent, pointing out the huge stones that were positioned with such precision. Locals had always known of the existence of the city so get a bit annoyed that the hype is bout who discovered it! when really what they mean who populated it, however that said it is a wonder. we loved every minute of it. Take you time to absorb everything you can, wonderful views.

Absolutely Awesome, a few tips though….
Nov. 2021
This awesome example of Inca culture and history did not disappoint. In fact we were left with a very surreal feeling during our supper the evening following our visit.

It wasn’t without a few teething issues and negotiation of a few hurdles.

We flew into Cusco a few days before our pre-booked visit to Machu Picchu, initially to acclimatise to the altitude, but also to take in some of the many sites in and around Cusco.

We had also pre-booked the train tickets from Cusco to Aguas Calientes at the time we booked the admisión tickets to Machu Picchu and whilst in Cusco, we checked the booking and that the train would be running on time, alas we were shocked when we were told we would only be allowed to take a 6kg pack / bag on the train despite the fact we had planned to stop in Aguas Calientes for two nights.

Fortunately our hotel in Cusco were able to store our luggage and we both took an overnight backpack. The annoying part of this is, there are normal stowage racks for rucksacks and cases in each carriage and no one challenged those with two suitcases or more. On return to Cusco, we challenged Peru Rail, who said packs / suitcases up to 15kg would be allowed.

The next potential hurdle was with Machu Picchu itself, we purchased our tickets on October 13th 2021 for a visit late November 2021. Machu Picchu released new regulations on 15th October 2021, these included -

No access unless you are part of a group with a guide
No plastic water bottles
No Walking sticks / poles

To name but a few.

We had planned to see the site ourselves and take our time, however the day before our visit we managed to find a guide on the streets of Aguas Calientes for 240 Peruvian sols ( about £45 ). However the following day it was evident, no guide was necessary, as a number of people entering Machu Picchu did so without a guide. Similarly many people had plastic water bottles and there were people with walking poles.

We purchased the bus tickets (from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu) the day before our trip, there is extremely tiny and faded small print which says the ticket is valid for 3 days, but it’s almost illegibility coupled with the valid date being that of the purchase date can be confusing.

So finally a few tips -

Purchase tickets for entry and the train well in advance they sell out quickly. Choose your entry time between 6am and 7am, a number of ares are closed off from 10am and if you arrive early enough you will see the mist lift and Machu Picchu reveal itself - quite magical and an iconic photo opportunity. Also we entered at 7am and up until around 9am there was probably less than 100 people on the whole site, by the time we were on the main site around 9am, there was probably around 1000 people on the upper terraces all jostling for position to take a picture. We had great views throughout and never obstructed or were obstructed by any other people for views or photographs.

Book a guide, I know I said it’s not an enforced regulation (yet), however the information and the history our guide Darwin provided throughout completely enhanced our experience. They are not expensive and you will find them near where you purchase your bus tickets.

Take sunscreen, when the mist lifts the suns rays burn quickly. We had hats and long sleeve t-shirts. You will see even the locals / staff and guides completely covered up.

Take water and sip often, it’s very easy to dehydrate with the combination of altitude and sun.

And finally for those not used to altitude, watch how much alcohol you partake in the day before your visit, we saw a number of people arriving as we left (around 1am) suffering with the affects of altitude compounded by alcohol the previous evening, which would probably lessen their experience of this wonderful place.

Stunning place but ticket policy not tourist friendly
Nov. 2021
Machu Picchu will not disappoint. It is definitely an Inca masterpiece surrounded by an amazing landscape. The place is surreal. My only complaint is that their ticket policy is not tourist friendly. If you buy from the peruvian government website, you have to change the date or entry time in Person at the Cusco office. Luckily, we found an agency that helped us change our dates due to an unexpected flight cancellation, so we went with Machupicchu Center for our tickets. Other than that, Machu Picchu was worth all the hassle.

Go Here..See This..Walk With the Incas
Nov. 2021 • Couples
What can you say that hasn’t been said about this magical and magnificent place? Just go..just see this and walk in the footsteps of the Incas. We did two days at Machu Picchu, and my suggestion is that if you do two days, make day one the upper part and day two the lower. Afternoon..about 1:00pm is a great entry time for the first day with a morning entry the second. The lower part is much easier of a hike. So, with tired legs after day one, day two is much the blessing on the legs.

Oct. 2021
Waoo this one was the highligh of my whole trip to South America, made the trek through Inca Trail with Vidal Expeditions and to be honest it was the most fascinating trek in my life, since they pick up in Cusco to the drop off the last day.
To see the whole porters working really hard that taught me life is more than what we see in our rutine day, Machu Picchu at the end was incredible end to way this 4 days hiking on the mountains.
Big thanks to VE for this whole journey.

It was way more incredible than all the photos and movies could show. It was soul enriching experience. Bring and WEAR insect repellent. The gnats don’t feel like much but they welt up later.
