- JBE137Cranford, New Jersey97 contributionsTremendous hike and viewsIf heading to Machu Picchu and in decent shape, I’d highly recommend this hike. It’s strenuous to get up to the top but totally worth the views of Machu Picchu from a different vantage point. I had a panic attack on the “Stairs of Death”…lol. The irony is that it isn’t steep but its a bit jarring. Overall, great hike and worth the effort.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 March 2024
- Michael FAvoca Beach, Australia44 contributionsDon't Let Your Fear Stop YouI was far more terrified reading the reviews of this climb than I was actually doing it. The path to the top is definitely steep however it is very doable. I am a moderately fit 65 year old with a fear of heights and I was able to make it to the top without too much difficulty. We entered Machu Picchu at 6:30am so we could start the optional (and ticketed) climb at 7:00am. The added benefit of this was to be inside Machu Picchu without the normal crowds.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024
- MCDLondon, United Kingdom218 contributionsEnjoy the viewsWell worth the climb. I was anxious having read some of the reviews but it's quite manageable. Take your time. Have some breaks and water stops. It took us around 2 hours total. 57 years old. Pretty inactive. Overweight but good health. Note that there is also a fairly narrow 'cave' that you need to go through on the way down.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 August 2024
- HeinCape Town, South Africa269 contributionsIncredible views, wonderful climb, NOT for people with a fear of heights.Huayna Picchu, on Circuit 3 of the new Machupicchu trail routes, is spectacular. A spot at the top overlooking Machupicchu is arguably the best breakfast view I have ever had. At a very leisurely pace, the climb up will take an hour. If you are fit you can do it in 25 minutes, but you will likely be held up by much slower climbers. Huaynu Picchu is a perfect compliment as a second circuit after completing Circuit 2. It was a highlight of my day, and I definitely recommend it. BUT... for the love of everyone's sanity, DO NOT GO IF YOU HAVE A FEAR OF HEIGHTS. At least 20% of the route up (and down) is steep enough to be classified as a ladder instead of stairs. On the very top I watched in awe as men and women slithered their way across perfectly stable boulders and inched their way down the trails on their buttocks because they were too afraid to stand up. In all this they placed themselves in far more dangerous situations than a walk would have done. Yes, itbis beautiful. Yes, it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But it is also a bloody high peak of a very steep-sloped mountain. Make wise choices.Visited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 26 September 2024
- Ker B4 contributionsEverything is pricey; a visitor must pay between $300 and $500 USD for a day's travel from Cusco to Machu Picchu.Unless one visits at off-peak hours, it's a fairly huge (two-hour tour) and impressive old Inca site that's usually packed with visitors. The amazing view and the engrossing guide stories combine to make this a very memorable experience. Access to Machu Picchu is restricted to guided tours only, which are often purchased via train from Cusco and bus from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu (and return to Cusco). Only drawback: be ready to get duped.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 September 2024

We booked tickets online as soon as they became available. Its a ticketed entry we booked 9 am -11 am where we could enter anytime between those slots. We got to Aguas caliente by train and stayed over night. First thing in the morning we took the bus to machu pichu. We had booked the bus ticket online as well. You don't need any print outs just your passport for id. We also booked an amazing guide Sergio. He was a fantastic guy! He spent all day with us on both hikes to site and the mountain. Its really important to get a guide as they know the history, best photo spots and they are the best motivators. The bus ride was about 30 min, we entered with our tickets and passport. We walked through the site and entered Huayna Picchu. It was 2 hrs to go up and come down. Stairs most of the way, killer on the knees. High Altitude causes breathlessness. Walk constant and slow and take deep breathes. Our guide was amazing he got us an essence to help us breathe, and coco leaves. It helped tremendously. Pack water, snacks, hat, sunscren, bug spray. The view from the top was incredible and you feel accomplished when you see machu picchu. There is a precarious climb when you do reach up top. So this is not for the faint hearted.

One of the greatest (and most difficult) hikes in the world! This is a challenging hike! My wife and I are in our early 60s, I’m a little fearful of heights, and we are in very good (but not triathlon-good) physical condition. And we made it! In the rain! We took our time, ascended carefully and enjoyed the views, captured our photos, and descended even more carefully. Took us about 3 hours. There were only a few areas near the top (“The Stairs of Death”) that I felt truly treacherous. Most of the way is tough but not potentially deadly. The views are spectacular and the accomplishment of reaching the pinnacle of such an iconic mountain is unsurpassed. If you’re there, and you can do it, you should!

We booked our trip with Latin Escapes in US, and fortunately, they arranged us to hike the Huayna Picchu. My understanding is that there is a limit and permit must be obtain ahead of time. We arrived to the gate around 6:40 am, and there were plenty of folks already getting ready for the 7 am hike. I must mention that Machu Picchu was very pretty in the early morning in the mist and very few tourists on the way to the gate. Also, it was interesting that there were people from all over the world in different physical shapes and hiking experiences, judging from the attire, etc. I believe most made it to the top without much issues. It is interesting how we bond with total strangers, when we are climbing very steep and exhausting trails together. The view is amazing, and considering the cultural and hitorical significance, it's well worth it.

Only 400 people are allowed to climb this mountain during the day, divided into groups at different times of the day. The climb is very steep and difficult and not everyone is capable of doing it. In addition, in the rainy season, the view can be damaged by fog. In spite of this, I would definitely like to climb again :)

We did the hike with our two kids ages 13 and 17 after a 3 day Lares trek. They did well and we summited in 1:20 and it took about half an hour to come down. The views were incredible and well worth it. The steps are are narrow, vertical and hand holds are not always available in some tricky areas but everyone managed without issue. We highly recommend this for families.

We climbed this with our guide. Let me start by saying we are in our early sixties. This fact was evident in that we never saw anyone during the climb that was over 30-35. Not that it can't be done, but you better be in condition to do the climb.
Entry is restricted by the entry time of your ticket and this ensures safety. Once you are doing it you will see why this is important. The lower portion is through the rainforest but as you climb, some of the steps become narrower and narrower. At some points the steps are only maybe 4 inches deep and 1 foot wide. When you go through the tunnel it is maybe 3 feet of clearance. Thus if crowded it would be of concern.
Once you are at the top it is amazing. Direct view down to Machu Picchu and the valley.
Was the climb physically demanding - yes. Would we do it again - probably once was enough but we are very glad we did.

The Inca ruins on the top are mind blowing. True Inca masterpiece of architecture. We went not only to the summit, but also to the Temple of the Moon, our guide Victor from Machupicchu Center took us to this amazing place and it was worth the hike all the way there. It took us 4 hrs round trip.

Machu Picchu is the most incredible place on earth and part of its wonder is the iconic mountain in the background Huayna Picchu. We were lucky to see it in its full glory as some arrive at the city to find it in fog. This mountain truly is an icon.

I went at the 10:00 am hour. It was nice. The sun wasn't unbearable. A lot of the hike is in the shade. Make sure to take plenty of water. The hike is steep and you will need water to ensure you don't get dehydrated.

If you hike Huaynapicchu first, will you have enough time to visit the citadel/ruins after? Or will they make you leave fast? Please let me know! Thank you!

Hi there, my wife and I will be traveling to Machu Picchu in January. We would like to hike Huaynapichu, see the moon temple up there and visit the ruins at the citadel. Do we take an early ticket, hike Huaynapicchu first then tour the ruins of the citadel or the opposite? It's very confusing and there is so much contradictory information. Please let me know..thank you!

I would say it depends on your energy level. Hike when your energy level is the highest. Take a walking stick and water. My hotel loaned me a walking stick which was a big help.
Make sure to get a reservation in advance because it does sell out.

Buenas!

After you make a reservation for Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu through the government website online do you have to pay for it right away? The website seems to indicate that you can pay for it through their office in Cusco, but will they actually hold the reservation for you? I was able to download a ticket with a reservation number, but I did not pay for it right away (this was a few days ago). Now when I go back to the the website and enter in my reservation number, it says that my reservation is not found. Is my ticket still valid?
Written 7 August 2019
I would follow-up with a phone call because you cannot pay at the gate for Huayna Picchu. You must have advanced reservations because they limit how many people enter that part of the site to about 200 people per day. Something is wrong with that website. Good luck.
