- JacunamatataDenmark5 contributionsLares Trek with a local Company; Sam Travel!Incredible Lares Trek experience! This is by far the best way to appreciate the beauty of the Andes Mountains and the isolated communities of the Lares Valleyin. Top notch tour guides and we loved that SAM Travel Peru is 100 a local Peruvian run business. Tour was authentic to Peruvian-Inca culture and the guide was so passionated about Inca history and making this experience incredible. If you want to do the Lares Valley this is the ONLY company you should book with. Each day was thoughtfully organized, which included a wonderful morning wake up with warm tea brought to our tent! Shoutout to our guides Raymer for making this an experience of a lifetime! Sulpayki Waikey!Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024
- Dhyk V1 contributionLares Trek, Unique Experience with Local Trekkers Peru.My friends and I did the 4 days and 3-nights Lares Trek to MachuPicchu with local Trekkers Peru, and personally it was the best adventure I've done in my entire life. Everything was very well organized from our hotel pick-up on the first day to our drop-off at the airport on the last day. Alberto the Manager, sent us with his best team of people. Augusto was our guide, and from whom we learned a lot, especially about the culture and traditions of the surrounding towns. Augusto made our trip something unique and invaluable, and of course at the end of it all he ended up being a great friend who we still keep in touch with from home. Our great chef Cristobal's food was delicious, always balanced and plentiful, 5 or 6 dishes to choose from, Thanks to him we gained a few extra kilos hahaha. The visit to MachuPicchu was the perfect closing, Augusto demonstrated there why everyone who visits MachuPicchu should do it with him, he is a walking encyclopedia. Finally, thank Local Trekkers Peru for all the organization and for sending the best team with us. I only have words of gratitude for them. 100% recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 31 March 2024
- Matt Bruce Rupe... O1 contributionThe trek is spectacularOur lares trek tour was operated by Terra Quechua Peru. The organizer of this company came to our hotel the night before the tour started to give us the exact plan and tickets, the tour offers high quality services, we were very satisfied with this tour. The trek was very nice, offering a journey full of encounters with local communities, dreamlike landscapes and the opportunity to immerse yourself in the ancestral traditions of the villagers. An experience that combines trekking, interculturalism and natural beauty for those looking for an authentic adventure in the Peruvian Andes, the food offered was delicious and freshly prepared, the campsites were clean and the food was very good. The hike from Lares to Machu Picchu is well worth doing.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 14 May 2024

The Lares Trek was one of the most beautiful treks I have done in my entire life. Me and my family chose Local Trekkers Peru, as our operator, and in the end we made a very good decision. Alberto the Manager, provided us with everything he promised us, good camping equipment, a good guide, a super cook who fed us very well throughout the tour and thanks to him I think we gained a few extra kilos hahaha. The landscapes and the local people make this trek something very mystical and authentic, it is not very crowded like other treks and the fact of feeling in the heights with no one more than a few people is something that fills your soul and especially finishing the adventure visiting machupicchu is a dreamed ending. Local Trekkers made our experience unfforgetable and we highly recommend them for the Lares trek to MachuPicchu.

My family just got back from a fantastic trek through the Lares valley, followed by our bucket list visit of Machu Picchu! With fit teenagers we weren’t deterred by the altitudes on this trek and it all turned out fine. We booked with Orange Nation, which sent an extra horse with us in case somebody needed to ride for part of the trek. They even offered to just have the horse carry our daypacks, which was very helpful on the highest two passes.
It was a tough choice between Lares and the Inca Trail, but we were all happy to have chosen what Orange said was more ‘off the beaten path.’ The mountains are incredible and we really felt like we were out there in the wilds of the Andes. We are all avid mountain climbers from Colorado and are glad we got more of the mountain experience than the developed trail experience. There was less wildlife than we expected, but it was pretty cool to walk through herds of alpaca along the way. We were also surprised by the few stone homes scattered through the mountains. Even after our guide introduced us to some of them, it’s still hard to imagine what it would be like to live so far from any road or electricity.
Orange sent us with a great guide who was very supportive for the trek itself and we were also impressed with how much he knew about the local culture and people. Gael has done that trail a lot and it was cool to be there with somebody who actually knows people in the villages we walked by. I was surprised how many kids were along the trail, selling bracelets and little things that they had made. Normally I don’t like buying from kids, but it was a weekend and Gael said the kids wouldn’t be in school anyway and that I shouldn’t feel bad about buying from kids. With the wide open valley and lack of vegetation (we were way above treeline) they could see us coming from a long way away and all came to greet us along the trail.
We were also impressed with the food on the trek! Our cook made us three course meals on a camp stove in a tent and each meal was delicious and filling. We’ve never managed to make such elaborate meals when camping before. It was quite inspirational! Overall a great trek!

Me and my girlfriend we changed our trek from the Inca trail to the Lares trek to Machupicchu, because we had delays in our flights to Peru and because of that we could not arrive on the starting day of the trek. But Alberto, the Manager of Local Trekkers Peru, in order not to lose everything we had paid, proposed us to do the Lares trek with which we accepted instantly, truly Local Trekkers, cares about the well-being of its passengers and Alberto proved it with this generous act. We enjoyed very much the Lares Trek, everything was perfectly arranged from start to finish, our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about his culture (Raul), our Cook Timoteo five stars for him as well, his dishes was deliciuos, each plate very well decorated and our horseman Don Sivirino was very helpful, thank you guys. This may sound surprising but perhaps our happiest memory of the trek isn't the mountains and the views (good as they were) but was of our Guide Raul and the rest of the crew. I really enjoyed their company and it made all the difference, buoying me up when the going was tough.
Local Trekkers Peru were recommended to us by some Friends who had used them years ago. After our own experience we could not imagine anyway better.

For our 4 day lares trek we hired the Terra Quechua Peru agency. I would recommend them 100%. Our tour guide, Erick, was incredibly knowledgeable. The food provided was very good and the tents were always set up and ready for the night when we arrived at the campsite. Everything is well organized and being able to meet local people to accompany and guide you during the 4 days is a very nice opportunity.
I really enjoyed it. We saw beautiful scenery, we climbed to 4800m, which was not the easiest, but it was worth it. The valleys, lagoons, local people and Inca places that we visited were excellent. Our guide, Moises, was amazing. He very entertaining and motivating, but above all he had incredible knowledge about Peru, the Incas, etc. He made the hike that much better. The food was also great. Very tasty and nutritious but also very well presented. We would love to eat that food at home. We are very happy that we booked our trip with this company Terra Quechua Peru.

We found this hike absolutely stunning and extremely peaceful and authentic, we went with a company called TERRA QUECHUA they were an excellent company that I highly recommend, the whole trip from start to finish was great, the tour guide was very efficient and friendly and helped me finish the hike although much later than the rest of our group. There are small amount of people making this expedition, the views were beautiful, we had perfect weather, not too hot, a little clouds and mountain fog. The hike was the most difficult and satisfying thing I have ever done

My partner and I did a 4 day tour of Lares with Terra Quechua Peru and it was amazing. The truth is that everything is very well organized, and the Lares path is very beautiful, with a spectacular finish in Machu Picchu. We visited all the circuits Peru has to offer in a different order than most tours, so we were able to avoid the crowds at some of Cusco's most visited sites. We were 4 tourists, 2 couples. Our guide Nilo was very helpful and informative, the hike itself was somewhat strenuous although it was absolutely stunning and very beautiful. We would certainly do it again

Hi I have booked to go travelling on my own but with an organised company in the New Year. I am 33 and It is the first time I am doing this independently and travelling this far from home. I am excited but getting a little anxious as it is coming round quick being 8 weeks until I leave tomorrow. I am doing a South American Journey for 65 days and one of the trips includes going to Machu Picchu, where I will be doing the Lares Trek as the Inca Trail is being closed for maintenance whilst I am there. I am fairly fit I think for my age and try to go to my gym atleast twice a week but have been looking up training to build myself up to the trek and to make sure my fitness level is okay to cope with the endurance and stamina. I was thinking the stair master machine at my gym would be a good way of to build up my fitness cardiovascular fitness and pace myself and to work on my lower lost strength core in certain gym clases too. I’m just bit worried about the altitude sickness aspect and incase I start to have difficultly in the lightness of air breathing and panic. I really appreciate any advice tips and guidance from anyone’s experience ensuring this trek. Many Thanks Chanade ☺️

My husband & I are 60 & are keen to Lares trek in June 2019. We both have average fitness but are a little put off by the possibility of altitude sickness. Are the tour operators very careful with dealing if people come down with it. Thanks Luci

Hi. I got a really headache the second day in Cusco because of the altitude. Our guide recommended me to drink coca tea with two teabags. It helped me. When you walk the Lares trek, there are two guides, one in the front and a guide at the back of the group, waiting for theme needs to take more breaks. You and your husband must take your time. Something I will recommend, is to bring as little as possible in your backpack. The higher you get, the heavier the backpack get. I wish you a good trip, it is so spectacular. Regards Cathrine Johnsen

In the Kandoo video there is mention of a narrow ledge on this trek. How narrow is the ledge? Similar to the narrowest portions of the unrestored Gt Wall? Many thanks.

Hi. Everyone has their own definition of how narrow they think the path is. In some places it is narrow, but I did not feel unsafe. I haven't seen this video. Regards Cathrine
