Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This historic church built by the Franciscans holds numerous religious treasures and the very well displayed catacombs. Must stop in Lima.

I'm not a huge fan of tours, but this tour was worth every penny. Mystery and intrigue, catacombs, and a fabulous library, not to mention a functioning church service if you go on Sunday mornings.

I wanted to see the catacombs and got a bonus of seeing a very interesting church as well! Our guide was excellent and gave us a tremendous amount if interesting information. I recommend this tour as a “must do” in Lima.

My husband visited San Francisco a few years ago. He had a wonderful guide who spoke very good English and knew her stuff. We visited it together recently and...this guide was nowhere near as informed or as fluent in English. Made me wish I'd taken the Spanish tour! We walked by several sites or presentations of items from the history of church, not a peep. He lacked depth so that even when asked something in Spanish, he got nervous but at least gave an honest, No sé. If you want to see a more interesting ossuary with a well documented history of how an exact copy of Michelangelo's Pietá happens to be on top of a magnificent mausoleum, go to Lampa in southern Peru. It is amazing! Back to San Francisco's. Be cautioned: this is a problem in Peru at nearly every historical site. You are lucky to get a well informed guide. Stress that as important when booking your trip. If you end up with someone like we did for Convento San Francisco, do what I am doing and write about it. Hopefully, it will encourage better guide training. Sigh, if only Rick Steves loved South America as much as he loves Europe we'd have guide books and pre-taped tours done by people who know their stuff! Sadly, it is not possible to tour the church and the catacombs without a guide.

Beautiful church full of history!!! The façade was being remodeled, we went in to see the catacombs, highly recommended. You pay entry and have a guide, very interesting explanation. It is close to the historic center of Lima. You cannot take photos inside.

This Spanish Baroque church and monastery was completed in 1674 and survived earthquakes in 1687 and 1746. That fact alone impacts the visitor, but it is the Catacombs below that are really extraordinary. They contained thousands of skulls and bones from an estimated 25,000 bodies that were laid to rest there until 1808. Apparently (if I understood this correctly) the burial space was exhausted out over the centuries, and the Monks separated all the bones into different chambers … femurs in one, skulls in another, etc. These were all laid out in very artistic order … chamber after chamber. Macabre! My only regret was that no photography was allowed!

Please prepare yourself for 20 minutes of wait. This church and its catacombs are in almost perfect shape, considering 243 years have passed since its completion. Good to visit at the start of a trip to Lima.

We took in the church and catacombs. Church was free and catacombs inexpensive.
Church was self guided tour. All plaques etc., in Spanish so either be educated or translate through an app.
Very beautiful and stunning church. We visit most churches in our touring in the world and this one is quite good.

Four stars just for the beautiful Mudejar interior of the church but incredibly annoying you can’t take photos inside the museum or catacombs so happy to forgo. Makes NO sense except to rip off tourists.

Huge complex featuring an old church from the 1600's that has survived multiple earthquakes, catacombs and convent. Definitely worth a visit and tour. No photos allowed inside.

Bonjour, nous planifions venir visiter l'église et les catacombes à la fin du mois de mai. Devons-nous réserver à l'avance notre visite ou nous payons à l'arriver seulement?
Merci beaucoup

What’s the exact location of this site? The address posted matches the location of a hotel and the church is not there. Is this publication referring to the saint Francisco convent in downtown or the one in Barranco?
Written 4 January 2018
It is in the downtown just across from the main square and behind the Government palace.
