The fun, narrow winding road through the neighborhood then opens up to the road that winds you around the back of the mountain and up to the top. There is a beautiful view of all of Lima. The next fun part was the reason we went to the top and that is to start the stair climb down! The front side of the stairs are painted in multiple beautiful rainbow colors. We counted over 400 stairs to get down to a sitting area with murals that seems to be the beginning of where houses and people live - somwhere in the middle of the mountain. It was a great experience and we loved it. We traveled in a group of 4.

Views are great, but NEVER NEVER go down the stairs to take some pictures. A guy high on drugs appear from nowhere, aimed at me with a gun and stole my money and phone after saying tons of times he was going to fill my body with lead. My worst experience ever. So stay on top where the cross is and that's it.

In the Plaza de Armas in the historic centro part of Lima look for individuals holding signs for the double decker bus that climbs the 1300 foot hill( with the cross on top that you see in the near distance looking north). Sit on the top deck for a ride that you wont forget .It's about 1 hour and costs 10 soles ( $3. US ) . Take a jacket as the temp drops 10 or so degrees. At the top you get off to wander around for photos( with luck you will see the Pacific thru the coastal fog ). There are sodas, water, bathrooms available. The bus ride is hairy because of the tight switchback turns( with a 2 foot guardrail -as you sit 12 feet high ), oncoming traffic, impossibly tight clearance between buildings and telephone poles in the village halfway up, and the breath taking view over the side of the bus. Not for the faint of heart, but good fun for all others.

We had a half day left in Lima and I had seen this hill from afar. I asked about it and was told it was not safe to go. Yet, we hired a person to drive us there and we are so glad we did. The view is amazing and the drive through the neighborhood with the colorful houses was even better (see photos). A lady did come out of her porch and warned us to not linger on the street (we had been taking photos). We left.
I think the best thing to do is to go very early BEFORE it gets busy. We were the only folks there (with some police)......

A pleasant ride with the bus tour, it takes you to the peak where a cross stands. Once up there you are surrounded by a view of the vast geography of Lima and the extent of its size and beauty. Definitely a nice activity to undertake during the day

Do not fall for false advertising
It is not a tourist attraction
It is the worst and most dangerous slum in Lima and locals avoid it like the pest

Great place to go while in Lima, we skipped miraflores and all those other so called cool places that are no different than going to the mall in the USA , etc . Anyhow my kids loved the tour bus that you catch in Lima main square, for 25 soles you take a thrilling ride to the mountain on a open top bus, get to see very closely the way they live and most important oh boy the views and the living on the edge momentum!!
You get to see the in your way up the oldest bull fight ring in South America, street murals and much much more, was very much worth it!

Cerro San Cristobal is the highest part of Lima. It is 420 meters over the sea level and from there is possible to observe whole Lima. This is the haze aloud it. Normally Lima is covered with haze which do not aloud to see to far away. You can take a bus in the corner of Santo Domingo church. It cost only 5 Soles (around 1.5 to 2 $) but do not expect too much. The bus do not depart until is totally full, so sometimes you have to wait an hour in order to complete the bus. The transit of the bus is through Rimac which is a poor area of Lima, so spouts of the way is not nice, actually is ugly. Do not expect to much of the guide. It repeats the same hundreds of time, because there is not too much to say about the mountain and the cross on top of it. Finally on top of the obtain the view is nice, if the weather allows it, and facilities are very basic. If you have plenty of time, you can go, but if your are in a hurry and with limited time in Lima, do not waist your time in this visit.

If you are in Lima and really want to have a clear idea of the size of city where you are you must do this tour!
This tour is offered in the streets of the historic center, Plaza de Armas de Lima and is truly economical, as they offer you a city tour through the historic center and end the tour up the hill "el mirador" as they call it.
I advise that you do the tour after 4 in the afternoon so that you can appreciate the illuminated city from the top of the hill.
The climb is a bit bumpy, since you will always be watching the empty side of the road up the lookout, but it is no problem, one more ingredient of the experience.
