The Presidential Palace dominates the whole Northern side of the Plaza de Armas and is a pretty good-looking building in its own right. We were lucky to visit there as the changing of the Guards was underway. The Navy band played some martial tunes and then the Army boys stepped out to take the salute. Very impressive drill marching and set piece moves and they put on a pretty good show, to be blunt, they were well drilled! Not too sure if the current President is in situ or like many previous occupants is now residing in prison? Get there for the change, you will enjoy it for certain!

Get there about 11:45 AM 7 days a week, to see the Changing of the Guard. It's actually very amazing with the beautiful Colonial place in the backgroung the band plays National Treasures, and even a few contemporary latin pieces, then there's the Pomp and all that....and the marching, and the yells, and finally, the Guard Change.....A must do!
After, walk around the right side of the palace all the way till the street turns right (right as you're looking at it from the front), there's a 105 year old restaurant call Bar Cordano at the corner end....every Peruvian President in the has eaten there. It's a little local spot, not expensive, or pretentious, just an Itialian corner bar, with the tile floor so old, it's lovely, and rutted with 105 years of walking, and the old bar and granite trim....They have the sandwiches with nice pork and ham, my fav was the Lengua di Sala and Aroz (Beef toungue in a nice red sauce, with rice). very tender, old world flavor, Salads, Ceveche, and so much more....Have a Beer, or a Pisco Sour, or try the Ciche Mareno ( a corn juice drink with spice), it's non-alcoholic, and it's refeshing, and strangley nice!...........after a nice little lunch walk on a block more and take a tour of the St Francis Church with the underground tombes, and the old library, short tour, just a few soles, and they have in English Tours, and it's a great place to get away from thre sun, nice and cool, and very very beautiful in it's Catholic way!

If you go to the Plaza de Armas, this is impossible to miss. Changing of the guards happens daily at noon and is nice to see. If you do a little research, public tours are offered on Saturday mornings of the palace and they are great. You have to sign up with ID during the week prior and the tours are only in Spanish but it is a great, informative tour that shows you the public spaces of the building. The Jefatura de Turismo is in charge of the tours and registering for a Saturday tour.

Make sure you're there at about 11:00 each day to see the Changing of the Guard at 12:00.
Getting there early will ensure you a seat in the stands opposite the main gate.

The presidential palace is another spot worth seeing in Plaza Mayor. Its an intimidating looking building. We were lucky enough to see the changing of the guard while there.

In the plaza de armas, this is the seat of power in Peru. The palace is very impressive, due to its size and ornate decorations. The cathedral is next door so take a look as well there.

Be here at 11.30 to watch the changing of the Guard. It lasts for an hour and is quite funny in places. Deliberately geared towards tourists, there are some highly complex routines with the odd salsa twist thrown in. Guards keep you across the street, instead of allowing you to be directly glued to the gates. It is impossible to get a good photo without railings in the way. Wait until the end of the show and position yourself near the right hand gate. The gates open and all the guards head off in the direction of the city hall. The police do look slightly scary with their riot shields but will let you take photos of them if you ask.

It was one of the first places we saw when we arrived at the Plaza de Armas of Peru, our guide William told us that each elected president lives for 5 years in this residence, and is the symbol of the country's executive power, this place is one of so many monuments that surround the square...

If you go to the palace at noon, you get to see the changing of the guard. I found it quite memorable, and well worth seeing. However, WHY is was so memorable is more than a bit odd. To my surprise, the guard was goose-stepping. I've never actually seen that anywhere, including Germany, though I've never seen a changing of the guard in Deutschland. I do understand that at one time Germany was acknowledged as the premier army on earth, and German military advisors were sought after by South American and Asian nations (including both Japan and Chaing Kai-chek's China). This was a time when syncopated funny walks were considered the heart and soul of martial prowess. So, says I, must be a throwback to German instructors in the 1890s or 1920s. But then, at the very end, as the guard goose-stepped off, the band ended with a rousing rendition of the opening (and closing) music from Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. As we say when stunned in Louisiana: "Well, dog my cats!" Orff's was an ardent Nazi and Carmina Burana is generally considered the best musical creation of the Third Reich. (For some reason music critics never took to the Horst Wessel Lied.). I suppose there's some explanation--weird coincidence or something--but all I can say, again, is "Well, dog my cats!"

Really enjoyed the marching band music! Uniformed, goose-stepping brass band did a variety of numbers that far out shadowed the actual changing of the guard. Be sure to go early (guides say it happens daily at noon) such as 11:30 or 11:45 because that's when the music starts. We heard the show is even better on Sunday.

Hello,
I see a lot of people talking about trekking through the forest and stuff. Was wondering, are treks included when you book with this hotel, or are they add ons? Also, would anyone mind sharing the costs of tours/activities/treks, or post the link where I can find them. Also, if you do want to do a tour and its not included, is it necessary to book in advance or can you show up to the hotel and let them know what you are interested in doing and book then.
Thank you!
