About
The MALI’s permanent collection preserves more than 18,000 pieces –among textiles, ceramics, metal work, photography, drawings and paintings– that witness to more than 3,000 years of art history in Peru. The museum exhibits the artworks in the permanent galleries in a sequential way divided in four sections: pre-Columbian, Colonial, Republican and Modern art. It also has galleries for temporary exhibitions of national and international artists. MALI is located in the heart of downtown Lima and provides the opportunity for a first approach to Peru, through its great master pieces.

Even if you saw Larco, don't miss MALI! Great pre-Columbian art but also excellent artifacts from the new and modern ages. Very interesting, to-the-point descriptions set the context in each room. The building and the surrunding park are also beautiful!

The second floor of the museums provides a concise collection of Peruvian art. It guides you through the different epoches with information both in English and Spanish. You can also download the app (there is free WiFi) which is user friendly and provides short and interesting description of different pieces.

The museum has an incredible collection from pre-Colombian artifacts to contemporary art which will give you an idea of how Peruvian art has evolved over the centuries. The pre-Colombian section is absolutely amazing... it's impressive to see how modern designs of thousands years ago can be! Definitely recommended

Out of every museum I went to on my 2+ week trip in Peru, this was my favorite museum. It had two exhibitions, making it a small museum, seeable in less than 2 hours. One of the exhibits was on a quasi-modern artists during the 1980s and 90s, whose work focused on revolutionary themes. This gave me great insight into Peru's recent political history. The other exhibit was on the ancient Huarmey civilization. This gave me a window through which to familiarize myself with one period of ancient Peruvian history. Both exhibits were professionally done with modern museum technology. First-class museum and for only 6 soles. Would definitely go back!

I could spend all day looking at the wonderful collections --- the pre-columbian collection is just amazing --- absolutely amazing. The rapid shift in style following the Spanish Conquest and the rise of the vice royalty is really interesting, too. This is a very nice museum with a wonderful collection of pre-Columbian and post conquest art -- not to be missed.

Lima's main art museum, largely dedicated to Peruvian art and artefacts. Some good stuff, though hardly enough to fill the cavernous building. Strongest on pre-Columbian artefacts, of which it has a fine collection; true, it can't compete, in terms of slick presentation, with the Museo Larco (private affluence vs public poverty again), but it's well worth a visit. Colonial art is also well represented, though after several dozen virgins, martyred saints, and posh viceroys I get a bit weary of the stuff (much of which, I suspect, is fairly 2nd rate art. But I'm no expert). I found the C19 and C20 more interesting - a few (too few) C19 landscapes and costumbrista scenes, and a smattering of interesting modern art. Someone said it's expensive - depends what you're comparing it to: free UK galleries or pricey US ones? BTW, has quite a pleasant (big) cafe and a so-so shop.

It is free on Thursday after 3pm. There were many good preColumbian Pieces, well labeled in English. Also the usual Cusco school paintings, not as good as what you find in Cusco, and some adequate 19th and 20th century paintings.
