About
Colonial House in Lima. Built by Jeronimo de Aliaga y Ramirez in 1535, the same year of Lima's foundation. Ever since then the Aliaga family and their descendants have lived in the house, which is now occupied by the seventeen generation of the same family. Rebuilt and reshaped after the earthquakes, and some changes in architectural trends, the mansion has served for almost five centuries to Lima's history.

- IlyaNJMarlboro, New Jersey991 contributionsWorth the extra cost and effortA very impressive interior. You have to hire a guide (the custodian will help you if you ask) and have to pay the guide in addition to paying for the entry, which brings the cost to quite above what you'd pay at other points of interest (S/70 in total, which is roughly $19 at the time of writing). On balance, worth the effort to see for those who like seeing lavish interior decorations.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 May 2024

Our cruise ship offered a nighttime city tour with dinner at Casa Aliaga. This home has been in the Aliaga family for 16 generations. It was beautifully furnished, and we enjoyed the ambiance as we had dinner with several other passengers from our cruise. When we entered, we were given a choice of beverages along with appetizers. This was my first Pisco Sour and not my last. Very good! We started with Artichoke Souffle, and the main course was sliced beef (chicken for me) along with rolls and fresh vegetables and red wine. Dessert was a very good regional dish that was made from the Lucuma fruit topped with melted chocolate and your choice of coffee or tea. Very delicious! If you have an opportunity to have dinner here, I would definitely recommend. The excursion was on the pricey side, but the experience is memorable.

When we arrived, our promised English-speaking guide was off sick. But the lovely man on hand spoke slowly and clearly, and gave us a delightful tour. Beautiful house, and a good reminder of how well conquistadors (and other colonialists) can live after they take over a culture.

This is the oldest house in Lima. Still lived in today. Beautiful architecture and gorgeous decorations within.
Popular and very busy on arrival. Some steps up at the entrance to enter however quite flat after. Stunning plants and flowers and beautiful taste in furniture, paintings and furnishings.
Well worth finding and having a look. Photographs allowed.

Absolutely disappointing. The guide didnt seem very happy to make a tour which lasted less than 20 minutes.
He asked me 30 soles (10.5USD!) NOT negociable (I insisted to do down with the price). The house consists of 6 rooms that the family allocated as museum while they live in the rest of the house (doors are strictly closed). I cant believe that this attraction can have such a good rating... It is even very difficult to find.
I would not recommend to go. It is my first time that I rate an attraction so badly :(.

We are really sorry that you didn't had a good experience with your guide. Casa de Aliaga is a private home where the Aliaga family still lives, it is not a museum and therefore services such as in-house guides are not found. A basic Spanish guiding is offered as a courtesy to our local visitors but we don't have English speaking guides as it is clearly stated in our web page.
It is necessary to contract a guide before visiting the house and this is very important as guides are essential for the visitors to understand the complete experience and meaning of the attraction.
If by any chance you return to Lima we encourage you to visit the house again, as our guest, but please booking one of our recommended guides first. Kindest Regards

We had seen the building, as we walked in the area close to our hotel, and were really impressed with it. The structure is a low one story stone building that is beautiful--well designed and executed with great attention to detail. The little yard in front is most attractive and inviting, but it is protected by a very nice antique gate and fence. We really wanted to see inside it and get a chance to experience it is a more personal manner, but that was not possible.....
Or, so we thought! Little did we know that we were going to have dinner here the next evening! Our guide told us that this is one of the special places that GLOBUS included on our trip. The present owner of the house (which has ben in the same family for almost 500 years) makes the property available for dinners, private events, weddings and meetings. She actually hosted our dinner and ate with us as she told stories and answered our many questions. The meal was very good, nicely presented, and well served in the huge interior courtyard. We were impressed.
The guided portion of our tour of the inside of the house is really grand. We got lot of information on the history of the structure and the many inhabitants. We were then allowed an hour or so for a self guided tours of many rooms. Over the years, there have been many changes to the interior. At the present time,iIt is furnished in a Victorian manner. Many of the antiques and art pieces have been collected by family members. It is really a great experience to be able to walk through all the rooms, and see the layout of the building.
This is one of those wonderful unexpected "surprises" you get when you travel. It is an experience that is well worth whatever the cost. If you can get it set up when you are in Lima, I strongly recommend it. The owner (who lives in an "apartment" at the back of the mansion) has set up a non-profit corporation to help with the maintenance of the property--which is significant because of the age of the property and size!
If you have a group large enough (we had 16, but I do not know the minimum), you should make the contacts to see if it can be done for your group. This is NOT an event you can set up upon arrival in country! EVERYONE in our group was totally pleased with this visit the owner, and the meal--I am certain you will be as well.

Okay, I was skeptical about this tour. First, I had to contact the house, find a list of English speaking tour guides, contact the tour guide, etc... It was also not cheap. 30 sol entrance fee plus fee of the guide. Comes about to be about $50 US. But I'd say it is totally worth the effort and the price tag. This house is truly amazing, but the tour itself is not very long. I looked at 5-7 different rooms. But what made the tour really memorable was the guide Hilda. We had a long chat about Peruvian history and politics. She knows so may interesting details of Lima's founders that I was truly captivated.
To save you couple of steps, here is the email address to make reservation: reservas@casadealiaga.com . It's okay if you don't know much Spanish. I wrote to them in English and they understood fine. Just write a quick message with day and time you are planning to visit. They'll respond to you in about 1 day (in Spanish, use google translate if you have to). The list of official guide can be found on their website casadealiaga.com. I personally recommend my guide HIlda. She was truly wonderful (marizayancce@gmail.com). Also, the entrance fee goes to the security guard you meet in the front. There isn't official ticket office or anything; it is someone's house, not an actual museum.
I know it is a lot of work, but I'd do it the way I did it. Don't cut corners and just show up. The security guard might show you around, but the experience won't be the same.

Some very old and fine things here. Most of it is not so old—it is late 19th century Belle Époque superimposed on a Colonial architecture. The ensemble was personal to the family who have always lived here, rather than a museum reconstruction, and we found that both refreshing and beautiful.

Hello! You need to make reservation with an agency. They will not let you in without a tour guide who previously confirmed the reservation for you.

Can 2 or 4 people take a tour and have a luncheon at Casa de Aliaga?? If not, could we be added to an existing larger group? We will be in Lima from Jan 23 to Feb 25.
Thank you,

Dear Paul: Cheers from Lima! I am Maria Eugenia de Aliaga, one of the owners of Casa Aliaga.
Yes, 2 or 4 people can visit the house.
We don't have English speaking guides at the house but you can download a list of recommended guides that you can book from our web page.
About the Luncheons, unfortunately as the house is not a restaurant with fixed personnel we only accept private groups with a minimum of 20 people. We do have an option for smaller groups (minimum 4 people) and it is the Tasting Menu that is designed by Chef Jeronimo de Aliaga and runs every Thursday (starting this year on 19th of February) at dinner time. You can check more information on this also in our web.
Please let us know if you have any more questions :-)
