Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This museum is technically open, but all the archeological and anthropological exhibits are closed. The only open exhibit is a tiny one about post-colonial times.
No one could explain to us why the majority of the museum was closed!
Definitely not worth the cab fare to get there

There was only one gallery open, which was on the independence movement. Everything else was closed. The staff kept rushing us through the one gallery toward the exit. We had hoped to spend an afternoon seeing pre-Columbian artifacts but we were done in 40 minutes.

This is one of the museums I really like to see, but when I checked online, it is said it is permanently closed. Bummer, especially the museum of the nation is also closed. It is said both have a large collection of Peruvian historical artifacts

I took my Canadian friend David here while he was visiting Peru. And he was absolutely astounded by the huge array of artefacts that this museum holds.
By law in Peru, all artefacts found in the country must be registered here in this museum. It’s the countries oldest and largest museum. It was the museum Peru had for it’s first 100 years.
Located on Plaza Bolivar in Pueblo Libre, this museum attached to the Quinta de los Libertadores (Magdalena Palace) is a must visit attraction in Lima.
Right now, it’s possible to see the most instantly recognisable artefact from Peru. The famous ‘Tumi’ (ceremonial knife) that hasn’t been seen by the public in over 60 years. You can also see the 2500 year old funeral shrouds found at Paracas and a lot of other artefacts dating back almost 14,000 years.
Definitely visit this epic Museum and its surrounding attractions in Pueblo Libre, the second most historically significant district in Lima!

Getting in was odd. They ask your country but then hadn't heard of the UK (we gave the full name in Spanish). It is a major world economy! There is no map of the museum made available when you enter. Given it's sprawling nature, this is important. We were ushered towards the European section of the museum which we had no interest in. The Incan section was closed so we only saw the Chavin display. Security guards were following us everywhere which was very unwelcoming.

Upon arriving, I was asked where I was from, informed that entry was free and guided on how I should visit. The space had several rooms showing what Peru's independence process was like, as well as an exhibition focused on Simon Bolivar, the person responsible for the country's independence and four others in South America (Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia and Ecuador).
The museum also had some items for sale, such as sweets and chocolates, as well as archaeological items.
The complete visit took around 1h30.

Admission to the Museum was free despite my status as a foreigner, praises the mystique of the competent Peruvian authorities to promote knowledge of culture without distinction of nationality, which does not happen in many countries, including my own (Mexico).
There are two exposed pieces that cause greater archaeological relevance:
The Raimondi stele and the Tello obelisk (Both Chavin de Huántar culture).
The historical section of the museum primarily exhibits pieces by liberator Simon Bolivar such as uniform, sword, mount, etc.).
Highly recommended the visit.

It starts with the history of the building itself, which is more than 200 years old and was home to both General José de San Martin and Simon Bolivar. Being there is living the story. The local guides are very attentive and lively.

To be honest this is probably one, If not, the best museum of Peru.
I was amazed from I got into this museum to the last moment in it. It shows in summary peruvian history, I went with some friends and we spent the whole morning and we could've spent even more, keep in mind this If you want to.
The entrance ticket is quite cheap to show what they have.
Highly Recommended!!!!
