- la s8 contributionsCatacombs and Franciscan church visitThe church is absolutely beautiful and is a must see. I strongly suggest to take a guide so they can explain the details and take you through the journey. Unbelievable how the catacombs are preserved. Good to know about the Franciscan way of life.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 January 2024
- Felipe41 contributionsBest attraction in Lima. It’s a must visit spotWe went to this place not expecting much from it, and we ended up have lots of WOW moments. All visits are guided (spanish and english available), but there is not need to book it in advance. We go in by small groups of 20 max, and the tour guide will educate you about the Franciscanos history, life and immigration to Peru. Photos and videos are not allowed, and the tour lasts no more than 1h. You will have to climb stairs (didn’t see elevators there) and you will go into the catacombs and stay there for a while… so if you’re claustrophobic it might be an issue. I’m claustrophobic myself, and it wasn’t an issue for me… but depending on the syndrome level, it could be. Into the catacombs you will see lots of bones and skeletons. The whole building is very well maintained and packed with history. It was the highlight of our visit to Lima.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 January 2024
- Erica H89 contributionsCool to see but wanted photosFrom a historical perspective and how interesting it is, I would highly recommend visiting. Unfortunately while we were there there was construction outside limiting the ability to take a good photo of the entrance and then photos inside are completely forbidden. I understand the no flash rule, but why no photos at all? I have been to other churches where there was an additional charge for photo taking and feel like that would be a good idea for here.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 6 June 2024

For a fairly cheap price we got a guided tour of the building including the Catacombs, which was really interesting. The building itself is beautiful. An easy attraction to get to and well worth a visit, we spent around an hour here.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 August 2024

I may not be a church-goer, but as an art lover, I have to say this church is superb. If you're not a religious type, you'll still find the craftsmanship astonishing. Photography is discouraged- this is somebody's sacred place after all.

We visited this church on our walking tour of old Lima and thus were possibly not able to give it the attention that it deserves. For example, we were unable to tour the catacombs.
It really is quite beautiful inside and obviously well constructed, as it has survived numerous serious earthquakes. It is one of the most visited churches in South America, but I did not think it the most beautiful. However, it still a very beautiful church and worth a visit.

Beautiful church dating to 1600s, damaged in 1650 earthquake, and completed in 1672. Original colorful tiles from Sevilla, Spain decorate the cloisters and patio. Library is home to centuries old manuscripts and books. Spooky catacombs display 15,000 remains. Inside the dome is an elaborate wooden latticework in a Moorish pattern. Didn't get to see the main Chapel & the famous Last Supper serving roasted guinea pigs. Regrettably, no photos allowed inside.

Fascinating tour of a well-preserved historic site. Loved the glimpses of 17th century monastic life. Architectural highlights include the library, courtyard, and a pretty impressive staircase. The guide pointed out the dates on the imported Spanish tile (early 17th century) but didn't show us the places where faux tile was painted on the walls (which was also very cool). The ossuary was interesting but a little bit offputting, since the bones were apparently arranged just for us tourists when the convent was converted to a museum. Overall, though, this was a highlight in a city full of beautiful surprises.

What a lovely and beautiful place, with lots of history. Located at dowtown, this place was worth visiting, I was amazed by the amount of history that that place has. I was speechless everytime the tour guide talked to us, she was very knowledgeable! I f you like history, then you should go to this place!

This is a fascinating tour and I am sure it was only marred by the near total lockdown of Lima when we went but there were lots of local guides around desperately trying to earn money and all seemed pretty expensive compared to the overall cost of entry. We paid at the desk and then proceeded to sit and wait for an English tour. Security guards then came along and ushered us onto the tour that was just departing... in Spanish! no amount of protest seemed to be able to change their mind that we had to go on the next tour. Fortunately the official guide did like to emphasise points.... a lot and so with a few words I could pick up the gist of what was going on. It was fascinating - but could have been so much better.

St. Francis's Cathedral and Monastery, also known as St. Francis the Great or Jesus St. Francis, in the historic centre of Lima
The face is in the Lima Baroque style, elegant, thick and memorable. Rhythmic filling extends along the wall, the top of the wall is decorated with wooden bars
Inside need to pay for the tour ticket many areas can not take photos!!

How many stairs we have to climb to go into the catacombs ? Is there an elevator? If we take the guided tour how long we will be there?

Olá, boa tarde! Gostaria de saber se é possível visitar as catacumbas, qual horário e quanto custa?

Anyone know how often is the English tour given? Some one said every 30 minutes?
Thank you greatly.
Written 18 November 2019
It’s not very long. I agree it must be around every 30 minutes or so. We were first placed in a non-English group, stepped out and were assigned to an English tour shortly afterwards.

Do ladies’ knees need to be covered, or are long shorts to the knee allowed?
Written 25 October 2018
There are no restrictions, BUT provocative clothing is more for the “lower class”. Perú is mostly catholic, so being prepared to go to churches, or even indigenous temples, proper attire is expected. Source: I’m American-Peruvian.

Do you have to schedule a tour of the catacombs, or can you just go in? What time of day are the tours running? Also what is the price?
Written 16 July 2018
Sorry, I just re-read your message. You can't go in on your own. You have to go with a tour.

Will this be open on Good Friday (march 31,2018)?!

One of the girls working in the church told me they only close on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But of course, always best to double check.

Will I still be able to visit the museum and catacombs on a Sunday morning? Or will it interfere with mass?
Written 16 November 2017
Hello, has anyone visited the catacomb and library past 6pm? The hours on their website says office hours is till 8:15pm, but not sure if this is the opening hours of the museum. We would like to go around 6pm.
Thank you
Written 13 November 2017
We were on a tour and we went in the afternoon. It was before 6:00 pm.
Since tour was arranged for us, we didn’t check hours of operations.
