This pedestrian mall was a great way to get to know Lima as a first-time visitor. On a beautiful sunny but hot Sunday morning we got to see a fair bit on our stroll. Lots of great buildings and architectural styles made for an interesting walk.

Lots of good shopping here and some decent deals. The stores all made sure that the employee that spoke the best English helped us, and while the amount of English varied from place to place, everyone was very accomadating. It was also nice that it's in a pedestrian area so you don't have to keep jumping out of the way of the crazy traffic.

Myself and two friends walked this street from Plaza San Martin to Plaza de Armas at night time. We walked it at approximately 10PM and were surprised that there were still quite a few people out and about. Even though a majority of the shops were closing, we were entertained by a Michael Jackson tribute street performer, a gifted spray paint artist, and countless vendors on the street selling handicrafts (though these were a bit bothersome); there was even one selling puppies! We only had the night in Lima but I wish we could have walked it in the day time when there is more activity and the stores are open!

The part of Jirón de la Unión that is most popular, most frequented and most often mentioned connects Plaza San-Martin in the south and Plaza de Armas (now rechristened as Plaza Mayor) in the north. There is a southernmost extension of the street (from Plaza San-Martin to Avenida Franklin D. Roosevelt) but it is more grimey and not really a part of Jirón de la Unión, attraction-wise.
The street is almost entirely lined up with stores and to a lesser degree restaurants, mostly of a fast-food nature. The stores are both chains and independent retailers, invariably of a budget tier (that is for the Americans, whereas for the locals they might be considered as highly-prized shopping destinations).
The street offers many architectural points of interest, such as colonial buildings with their ornate wooden carved Moorish balconies and buildings in the Belle Epoque or Art Nouveau style. The elegantly curvy Art Nouveau style is represented by the beautiful 1906 Casa Courret, which used to be the studio of the Eugenio Courret Photography, founded by the famous Lima photographer, a French native Eugène/Eugenio Courret; by the time the building was inaugurated, in 1905-1906, the studio was operated by his successor Adolfo Dubreuil. The street address is Jirón de la Unión 459, but it is of little help, for the street numbering in Lima is a nightmare to navigate. It is approximately the 5th building on your left, walking down from Plaza Mayor to Plaza San-Martin.
Also of a great note is the amazing Iglesia de La Merced, completed in the richly ornate Churrigueresque style in 1765, on the same side of the street where Casa Courret is, but closer to Plaza San-Martin.
To walk the entire street will take you less than 10 minutes. A must-see part on your tour of Lima historical center.

Well located on the heart of the historical district in central Lima. Overall chicken was tasty and sauces that came with it were delish. Fries and salad were also very good. Menu only shows legs but by pointing at one's boob then at one's own leg and shaking head to say no the water got the message that we wanted white not dark meat. Felt a little like a Foghorn Leghorn moment but it worked. Tasty meal for a reasonable price.

Union Street is a 5-block long pedestrian mall that links Plaza de Armas with Plaza San Martin, both places you’ll want to visit. It’s a pleasant walk lined with numerous stores and cafes. Most of the time my eyes were directed up at the charming Neoclassical and Art Deco architecture with graceful arches and beautiful balconies. I was impressed with how clean the area was. At 10 am on a weekday, it was quiet too. I imagine it’s a busy place later in the day or on weekends.
