Impressive Plaza Mayor de Lima
Jun. 2021
This is a must see when staying in Lima city. Walking around and seeing its great colonial buildings is just amazing. We visited the Cathedral of Lima as well, which is right next to the Plaza.
Definitely worth a visit!

Could Only Walk on the Outskirts but Still Beautiful
May 2021
Unfortunately, when we visited the center of the square was closed, so we could only walk around the outskirts. The views were still beautiful however and we enjoyed visiting the beautiful church and archbishop palace. There was also a sandwich shop there called El Chinito that had many customers, but we didn't get to try it.

Right at Lima's birthplace!
Oct. 2019
Remember, everything started here ... On January 18, 1535, Spanish "Conquistador" Francisco Pizarro founded the City of Lima and, right at this very site, designated where the "Plaza de Armas" (or "Plaza Mayor") would be built! Just amazing! The other buildings came some time after, being built and rebuilt along the centuries up to their todays' features - the "Catedral de Lima", the "Parroquia del Sagrario and the central water fountain (all from the 17th century); the "Palacio Arzobispal", the "Palacio de Gobierno", the "Palacio Municipal de Lima" and the "Palacio de la Unión" (all dating the 20th century) constitute the city's focal point. You are just about to visit the very heart of Lima, its beautiful historic center, locally known as "Cercado de Lima". Take your time and stroll along, enjoy the views, the lovely manicured gardens and lawns, the "Changing of the Guard" at noon in front of the "Palacio de Gobierno" and visit the interior of all buildings that allow so! And as a curiosity, Peru's independence from Spain was proclaimed right here in 1821! Don't forget your camera! Enjoy!

Midday Parade!
Mar. 2020
The Plaza de Armas is a square with beautiful Spanish-style architecture including the cathedral on one side. There are several attractions in this area and at noon, there is a parade/changing of the guard ceremony. A great place to start your visit to Lima with great photo opportunities.

Loved the Band following the Changing of the Guard
Jan. 2020
We visited the Plaza de Armas on a walking tour of downtown Lima. Our views were not as great as they could have been because they were setting up for a big celebration with popular musical groups that evening. The real treat was the wonderful band that played following the changing of the guards.

Great Photo Opportunites
Mar. 2020
We were on a walking tour in down town Lima. The main square is definitely worth finding and ensure that you have your camera at the ready.

Immaculate gardens surrounded by beautiful colourful buildings and fountains. Buildings in the main square include the Presidential Palace, the Archbishop's Palace and Lima Cathedral. If you are lucky you may experience the military band and the appearance of The President.
