This former house of chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega discusses his life and works, as well as housing exhibits on the region's deep past and showcasing a small collection of artworks from the various ancient civilizations of Peru, and from colonial times.

The two most interesting sections are the most unique: The de la Vega biographical exhibits, and the deep-history (geology and prehistorical anthropology) exhibits. The sections on early civilizations are neither large nor remarkable. The colonial artwork, mainly religious, is a better collection than the ancient one but also not especially memorable.

The museum is on the multi-ticket, and is certainly worth a visit if you already have that.

The Regional Historical Museum of Cusco offers a succinct overview of the region’s rich history, including pre-Incan and neolithic artifacts, the rise of the Incas, and Spanish colonial items. While some visitors find the

The Regional Historical Museum of Cusco presents a compact yet varied collection, offering insights into the pre-Columbian era, the grandeur of the Inca civilization, and the colonial period influenced by the Spanish conquest. Despite its size, the museum allows a quick delve—around 30 minutes—into the rich tapestry of Cusco’s past. While the relics are modest and the narratives could be more detailed, the museum is part of the Boleto Turístico, making it a cost-effective choice for visitors holding this pass. It’s a suitable option for those with limited time who still wish to glimpse the region’s extensive history. The museum’s maintenance, particularly the restrooms, could see some improvement to enhance the overall visitor experience.

I wandered here on my own as I had a tour ticket that included it. I was there when it opened and have to say the staff were very pleasant indeed. I enjoyed the visit, with plenty in explanation in English.

Terrible experience and awful service. Small museum, with strong smell of mold in the rooms. We were in three and before leaving the museum, needed to use the toilet, but for our surprise there was no toilet paper in the female restroom and in the male restroom either. When we asked the staff about it, they said the person in charge was out and there was nothing they could do. They suggested us to go to another museum to use the toilet there!!! When we asked about the manager, they said the manager was out and wouldn’t inform the manager’s name. We said we would wait for the person to return or for them to find a solution, and they basically kept us waiting for more than 10 minutes till they finally brought the paper (that was somewhere there all the time!!!) and cut with a scissor very small pieces for each one of us. According to them, they don’t keep toilet paper in the restrooms because the tourists steal the toilet paper (!!!!!). Of course, tourists pay thousands of dollars in tickets to Peru, trip packages and hotels to go to museums and steal toilet paper….Seriously, that’s an awful treatment to people that come from far away, using the toilet at a place you paid to get in is something very basic, and they treated us as if we were doing something wrong and made us feel very ashamed for having to ask for toilet paper that should be there in first place.

The Museo histórico regional is a museum in a colonial house. You can get a brief of Cuzco's history, all guided through Garcilaso's life.

Normally, you need a ticket to the other sites to gain admission to the museum. I had tickets from previous trips but not for that day. In conversation with the attendant, she asked my age. There are many benefits to being 65.

Excellent introduction to pre-Incan civilisations, their development and their amalgamation under the Incas. It also gives some idea of their coalescence and subsequent subjugation by the Spanish colonisers. Finally, one is introduced to the mixed heritage heroes that ultimately led to the establishment of the Peruvian state in 1821. Some good displays and fine paintings. Unfortunately no photography in the exhibit areas in the museum. Part of the historical/cultural ticket. Well worth seeing, particularly in combination with the cathedral.

A small museum that is part of the Boletos Touristico. You have to lock up your bags and photos are allowed only in the main foyer. 8 small rooms. The location is in the fomer house of Garcilaso de la Vega, a Spanish/Inca writer who lived here in the 17th century and is now buried under the Cusco Cathedral. Interesting collection of artifacts including antiquities, arrowheads, paintings, colonial art, costumes. It also showcases the works of Garcilaso de la Vega and the jewellery of the various cultures that inhabited this region - Inca, Wari and Pukara. Its informative. Everybody here seemed ready to help and offer explanations.

Nice little museum on our city ticket. Didn’t take long to get around it all. Lots of different rooms with the history of Cusco.
