I expected to be mostly birding higher up in the Andes but, after one day, we headed gradually downhill, mostly walking along the highway. This did give us exposure to areas from about 4,000 m. down to 800 m. but, since it was primarily walking along the highway, we weren't near any species sensitive to traffic noise (constant horn honking by cars and trucks negotiating the hairpin turns). Accommodations and food were good and our driver, Hugo was exceptional.

No trip to Peru would be complete without visiting Machu Picchu. Amazing historical ruins that are high atop the ridge over the city of Machu Picchu. You can take a bus ride to the top or for more adventure hike the Aztec trial for 4 days. For even more adventure you can hike the young mountain Wayna Pikchu to get an overlook of Machu Picchu

Ok, so I assume that if you are reading this that you are interested in doing the Inca trail and aret keen to find out what it would be like to do a private tour. You probably want to know how to make the process a world class experience rather than a gruelathon and you are probably interested in maintaining a few of the comforts of home (in truth you probably want all of the comforts of home but you have come to realize that is impossible).
This is meant to be a review of the private five day four night trek of the Inca trail. In passing on our actual experience we also point out the relative advantages and disadvantages of this versus the four day option but it is likely that everyone will have different priorities and one may appeal more than the other depending on them.
We started to review the companies offering the trek and got very confused. Many of them seem pretty similar, because they are. We ended up choosing Andean Adventures because we wanted to do the 5 day trek, have a reasonably priced private tour and to have a toilet tent. We liked the idea of the 5 day, 4 night trek because we knew that we would eliminate the last "camping night" and replace it with a hotel (we just aren't into camping much, sorry) leaving us the same number of camp nights as the other tours and at the same time availing ourselves of the option of visiting Manchu Pichu on two different days, increasing the chance of seeing it in sunshine and making it possible to hike Wayna Pichu on the final day, which we did. We felt very comfortable in dealing with this company because of the extreme helpfulness of Roma, who replied to all emails and questions quickly and thoroughly. We know this because we like to know what we are getting into and we tend to dislike organizational problems. That woman is a saint!
We prepared in Cusco for three days and met Ernesto, our guide. He was exceedingly experienced, knowledgeable, patient and encouraging. He spoke excellent English and had a good sense of humour. The first day of the trek is shorter than the four day tour and very easy. The second day starts off pretty easy and then steepens toward the end of the day. That is when the party is over. The third day kicks your butt with two steep climbs and one long descent along with a lot of up and down along the way. Contrary to what we expected, the last day of hiking is the second worst day with a seemingly endless set of downhill steps and then some up and down to get to the Sun Gate. Still counting? That is right. The five day trip has the same number of hiking days as the four but has an easier first day and a harder last day. What we appreciated was that those four days are out of synchronization with the 4 day treks which meant that we seemed to have the trail to ourselves for the majority of the time!
We traveled with six porters and a cook with our guide. Antonio, our cook, pulled off culinary miracles and provided us with cooked multi course meals for breakfast, lunch and supper with a morning snack and late afternoon tea! If this hike were much longer, I would have gained some serious weight!
The one slight negative is that the campsites on the second and third night are at a higher elevation which means that you are colder at night but the sleeping bags provided were very good (still think about bringing gloves and a toque). Our tents were extremely roomy ( more than many of the other companies).
Andean Adventures did a wonderful job of preparing us for the trip and organizing our transfers and I would highly recommend them. This hike is hard and you need to have prepared yourself for it by being fit and doing a lot of stairs. Having said that, the hike would be worth doing on its own, even without Manchu Picchu with fantastic views, many animals, orchids and other flowers and an amazing night sky.

Dear Mexifried,
Thank you for your review in our TripAdvisor page. Your comments are really useful for future travellers that want to do the Inca Trail and still don't decide whether to do the 4 or 5 day version. You have wrote important things such as the difficulty on the 5-day trek per day and we consider that as an important thing to know.
Also, reading your comment, travellers get an idea of the weather along the trek. You are right, it is very cold in May at the campsites, so travellers have to bring warm clothes to have a good rest.
In addition, you have mentioned things about our service, regarding our communication, our cook and our guide. Thank you so much for such a great words for our staff. We are happy to know you had a great experience in Cusco. We would like to thank you so much for explain your experience so well. We would not have done the same job.
Once again, thank you for your preference and trust, we know it could be harder to take a decision, and we are grateful with you for choosing us.
Our best wishes for you and your wife

My wife and I visited Cusco, where had three days of touring to sites of interest outside the city, and Aguas Caliente in order to visit Machu Picchu.
Andean Adventures arranged the visit (including hotel accomodation, transfers, vehicles with drivers, and guides) which was outstanding in every sense.
We travelled as a couple with the exclusive support of a guide, except for Machu Picchu where we linked up with some friends to make a group of 7. Our guides, Rueben and Ernesto, were knowledgeable and friendly and totally committed to ensuring we enjoyed our visit and learned a lot.
Andean Adventures' Roma Blanco arranged the entire visit and did a brilliant job.
Highlights included Machu Picchu (of course), Ollantaytambo, the Maras Salt Mines, the Moray Incan agriculture site and the Pisaq ruins.

I booked a 3day/4night trip to Tambopata with Andean Adventures Peru and it was a trip I'll never forget. Roma Blanco was extremely helpful to correspond with for booking and trip details. Our guide Ronald was fully bilingual, extremely knowledgeable about the landscape, wildlife, and plants, and an enthusiastic, positive guide. The trip was well-paced, giving moments to take in the amazing sights and sounds of the jungle, while exploring lakes, rivers, and trails through Tambopata. The boats were safe and well-maintained and the staff at Tambopata Eco Lodge were great (great food, clean rooms). Beyond that, we saw 5 species of monkeys, 4 macaw species, 2 bat species, capybaras, parrots, Cayman, bamboo rats, Goliath bird-eater tarantulas, numerous other birds and insects... A naturalist's paradise!

Dear Charlene,
It is so good to hear from you!
It has been a year since you did your trip to the Amazon in Peru. We are very grateful to read your comment. Thank you for your time!
You have described so well your trip to the jungle of Peru, the animals you saw and also gave our travelers a good idea of what they can see on this trip. We agree with what you say about our guide Ronald, we are sure our team in Puerto Maldonado does its best. In addition, for us, it was a pleasure to answer every question you had to do this trip. Also, we have shared the photo you sent us too. You were so kind to allow us to do it.
Receive a warm greeting from Andean Adventures Peru's team

We just got back from Peru. We had a wonderful experience. We used Andean Adventures to book the whole trip. We had a limited time of 9 days due to school vacations but we were able to cover Amazon, Cusco/Sacred Valley, Machu Pichu and Lake Titicaca. Peru is a great country with diverse natural riches, excellent food and friendly people everywhere.
We did a lot of research and settled on Andean Adventures. Roma was very helpful in answering many of our questions and being flexible in crafting an itinerary that met our needs. Despite covering so much we felt not rushed and the transitions were well planned and we felt we had the right amount of time at each of the places. Andean Adventures operations manager Fredy (took our late evening calls) and Cusco Guide Santiago were awesome. Santiago engaged both our children who are very inquisitive very well and patiently answered any questions they had while covering overall introductions to each of the sites in Cusco and Sacred valley. The guide in MachuPichu took us early in the AM when the crowd was not high and covered all the major sites quickly even though they could have spent more time with us. The guides in Lake Titacaca (Abad) and Amazon (Hugo) were excellent as well. We have traveled extensively overseas and I have reserved my own trips or engaged other travel agents but will recommend Andean adventures to anyone going to Peru as a professional/first-class organization. Their pricing is very competitive and service great.
Roma, Andean Adventures team thanks for making our special visit possible.
Few tips to fellow travelers:
We used Bank Of America ATM in Peru at Scotia bank ATMs. They are available in airports and in most of main squares. No fee but BOA charges 3% conversion charges. But better exchange rates and convenient to withdraw as you go along.
We used AA Miles to reserve LAN Domestic tickets. Each ticket was only 6000 miles whereas it would cost $150 to buy on LAN website. Using Miles was a great deal.
$1, 4 Nuevo Soles Cervezas were awesome in several places. We have other places to travel next in our plans but we will look forward to go back at earliest opportunity.

I could write a book and still not have enough adjectives to describe this trip and the incredible journey we experienced with Andean Tours
Freddy was a fantastic tour coordinator. All our guides throughout our 10 day visit were knowledgeable and friendly, Lodging and the hotel staffers were more than accommodating. Meals provided were delicious and more than you could eat. our home stay was humbling and the renewal of our vows on Amantani Island was nothing we could have ever imagined.
The entire trip was sensory overload. The country (breathtaking), people( beautiful), food (delicious), music, smells etc....
I could go on but will just say that everyday was better than the one before and this was all made possible as a result of Andean Tours.
Highly recommended you will not be disappointed.

Dear Barb,
Thank you for your comments! It is so good to know that you enjoyed so much of the tours here. We are also happy to have participated in the organization of your trip.
Regarding what you say about people, food, music of our country, we are glad to read what you think about that. When someone comes to Peru and Cusco, we try to teach them, the most about our culture. We like travelers feels like home when they come to our city. If you were on a homestay, then, we are sure you have learnt more about the life style of local people.
In addition, Mr. Fredy, our operation manager is always willing to help travelers who come to Cusco. He has many years of experience as well as most of our team in Andean Adventures Peru.
Well, once again, thank you for tour time to write your comments in our page, you were so kind to do it!
All our team wish you all the best!

After traveling 5 thousand miles to come to Peru to hike the one day version of the Inca trail we had the misfortune of being caught up in a one-day transportation strike. This tour operator went over the top to do their best to work around the situation and make our trip an enjoyable one. The tour company could not reach us to inform us of the situation by phone, so they actually sent a representative over to our house in Cusco where we were staying to inform us of the situation and to work on an alternate plan. They advised us to leave a day early, and they made all the alternate hotel arrangements, and train reservations. Our tour turned out to be an additional bonus as we got to see two additional sites that we would not have seen. As it turned out we had to stay an additional night in Ollantaytambo, but that was a bonus too as the town was deserted and we had the entire town and archaeological sites to explore free of tourists. Our guide Javier who took care of everything was incredible, and due to the strike he navigated the troubled waters like a moving target. His knowledge of the Incas and Machu Picchu was astounding. All the team at Andean Adventures were on the watch to make sure our tour went well. I have been in the travel industry for 40 years, they did an incredible job. My thanks to Fredy for staying on top of all of this.
Thanks

Dear Dan,
Thank you for your wonderful comments! The entire Andean Adventures Peru team is delighted to know that in spite of the transport strike that affected your 2-day Inca Trail, you still had a great time in Cusco!
With its cobbled streets and remarkable archaeological site, Ollantaytambo is a lovely village, and the extra day proved an excellent opportunity for you to visit this beautiful attraction, as well as the Inca agricultural terracing system at Moray. As you so rightly said, the circumstances of your tour meant you had the chance to enjoy these two fascinating sights at a time when few other visitors were able to access them, and we were very pleased to be able to make that possible.
Regarding your trip, only too aware of your situation, the staff of our reservations and operations departments worked hard to offer you the best alternate plan, while at the same time your guide, Javier, employed his long experience to help us do our best to help you.
Fredy Padovani, our Operations Manager, and all of us who work at Andean Adventures Peru, are grateful to you and your friends for choosing us to organize your trip.
We wish you all the best!

Phenomenal trip to Peru that included Machu Picchu, Pisac, Ollantaytambo and Rainbow Mountain! Andean Adventures Peru custom tailored everything based on my timeline including drivers in Lima. All current COVID measures were used. I highly recommend them! Whether in Cusco, Lima or other towns, the Peruvian people were some of the warmest I have met during my time traveling.

How much is the "Manu Paradise & Macaws" 5 day tour? We will have 4-8 people, and are looking to depart on either March 9th, 2016 or March 10th, 2016 from Cusco.
On these same dates, and with the same number of people, we are also interested in all the other Manu tours, if you could please let us know pricing information on those as well.
