The Cathedral, Coricancha, and surrounding areas with the Monuments, Murals, amazing scenery on the hillside, and the vibrant people made us fall in love with this ancient and clean area in this city. The precisely created Inca Foundations of all the buildings, and the stunning Balconies all around just made us want to stop and stare. Even the numerous vendors and hawkers were not able to distract or annoy us. There was so much to do and see here. We were only here for four days, so had to hit the ground running without giving ourselves enough time to acclimatize with the high altitude here. In spite of this, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and would love to return to see and explore everything again at a more relaxed pace.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 24 September 2023
- Dead_SkylineMontville, Connecticut47 contributionsA Completely Unique Pastiche of Inca grandeur and Colonial CharmCusco has been called the "Rome of the New World," and spending time strolling its streets really brings home how accurate that nickname is. Despite the Spanish Catholic superstructure of arcades and churches (all of them quite charming), the foundations and bones of the city are clearly Inca in a way you will not see at this scale anywhere else in the world. Many of the great colonial casones were built on Inca foundations of slanting, massive stones fitted together in their peculiar and unmistakable planar jigsaw fashion, and those foundations are still everywhere to be seen as you walk the streets, especially the steep alley-like Inca-era ones such as calle Loreto. It's true that there are many annoying hawkers and touts, including the ubiquitous massage-pushers and art dealers, but you will just have to ignore them. Don't miss the Plaza de Armas, views of the surrounding hills twinkling with light at nighttime, the foundations of all the Inca palaces repurposed into colonial edifices, or the viewpoint of town from the Mirador de Plaza San Cristobal.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 May 2024

Simply gorgeous architecture. Lots of free walking tours starting from the main plaza. We always felt very safe when here and enjoyed watching numerous parades and marches.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2024

I spent New Years in the Plaza de Armas in Cusco in Peru and it was an amazing experience, many people gather there to welcome the New Year with fireworks, drinks and food; however, you must be careful where you eat because you could get sick as it happened to me and you will have to spend a few nights in the clinic.
Near Cusco you can find many things to do and places to visit such as Machu Pichu, the mountain of seven colors, the Sacred Valley and Fallen Angel Restaurant.
It is a place that definitely deserves to be visited.

To understand the area, historical relavince and architecture I would recommend that if your not on a guided tour, you hire a local guide for 2-2.5 hrs. A guide book will miss to much.
There are many dining options and shopping options. As Cuzco was intergral in Peruvian history, you should make it part of your trip.
Driving in this city/area is very hectic. If you are not staying within a short walk, take the inexpensive taxis .

Visiting Cusco is absolutely mandatory to all those traveling in Peru. This important city is considered the "Historical Capital of Peru" and, since 1983, a Unesco appointed "World Heritage Site". It has been the capital of the "Kingdom of Cusco" and of the whole "Inca Empire" from the 13th century until the arrival, in the 16th century, of the Spanish conquerors. Stroll along its "Centro Histórico" and visit the numerous monuments, squares, fountains, streets, museums and churches. Start at the magnificent and central "Plaza de Armas", visiting the monumental "Catedral del Cusco" and the baroque "Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús". Then, head to the museums through the cobblestoned narrow clean streets (the "callejóns"), visiting the unmissable "Museo del Convento de Santo Domingo del Cusco - Qorikancha" and the "Museo de la Vida Monástica - Monastério de Santa Catalina del Cusco". Fantastic restaurants and bars complete the scene. Enjoy!

Walked here from hotel - lots of shops, local artists, and cathedrals. Went to Choco Museo, bought peruvian alapaca hats and shawl in small local artisans area and found a gem shop a few blocks off the square where i bought amethyst and topaz stones at a great price. There is a fountain and large cross on the hilltop visible from the square as well. Enjoyed walking the area at day and at night.

As part of the Wendy Wu Sourth American tour we spent time in Cusco with our Guide Corrina Duran exploring the delights of the city and enjoying some wonderful food.
We stayed in the wonderful Inca Palace hotel and visited the cathedral and saw the last supper painting with the Guinea pig and also saw the Black masons
There were celebrations in the square that we watched whilst enjoying an excellent lunch.
There were also some excellent shopping opportunities to enjoy

Lots of tour groups in the area starting their tours and pausing at the attractions all around. It is a great place to go on your own or in your own group and explore with a guide book and that's it.
Get off the main streets and explore the side alleys and areas outside the main tourist spots. There are great little restaurants and souvenir stores to find.

This area made us fall in love with Cusco. Walking around its historic center is a special opportunity. Even after a week of staying in the same neighborhood, we didn't get bored of simply wandering around. Even the hustlers that want to get you into their restaurant don't seem annoying when the backdrop is this area.

Full of Peruvian character. Authentic food, buildings, culture and beautiful people. Cusco is a small town but offers everything. The gateway to the mountains. Check out the big market, a 5 minute walk for the city center, walk to Jesus, whom overlooks the city and try the wonderful coffee in the little cafes through the cobblestone laneways.

It’s really compact (ie small), badly laid out, all the explanations are in the very worst Pidgin English, much of it nonsensical. The place is grotesquely over staffed, most of the employees here stand around chatting when they’re not aggressively shouting at visitors to follow a certain (unexplained) direction around the building. Poor.

Hello all, we are going to Peru in June. Any tips for our trip to Cusco would be appreciated. How much time should I allow for Cusco? How about Machu Picchu? What time did you leave and how much time did you spend there? I assume you came back the same day to Cusco? Sorry for all the questions but I have never done anything like this before and I am a little clueless.
Thanks,
Barry

Hi! We landed in Cusco and immediately left to go to the Sacred Valley. This helps to acclimate to the high altitude. We were there for two days and then went to Macchu Picchu for two days. We then returned to Cusco for two more days. We made our arrangements through Avanti Tours in the US which then subcontracted with Condor Tours. They had EXCELLENT guides and services. We loved our hotels--the Casa Andina in the Sacred Valley was very nice and even had a planetarium on the grounds! Then we also enjoyed the Inkaterra Pueblo Hotel in Aguas Caliente--the town at the base of Macchu Picchu. In Cusco we stayed at another nice hotel, the Aranwa Boutique Hotel. Condor arranged for our train to Macchu Picchu, our various tours and guides and travel within Peru. We also got our entrance passes and hiking passes for Huyana Picchu in this same manner. Have a great time! It is a trip of a lifetime!
