This museum’s main attraction is Juanita, whose ritually sacrificed and frozen body was unearthed in a volcanic explosion. This young girl’s miraculously preserved DNA has provided priceless insight into the Inca civilization.

If during your tour of Arequipa you hear the story of Juanita the Ice Mummy, you have to visit the museum and see the "Girl of Ampato" preserved in her refrigerated (freezer) cabinet. The museum is quite small and compared to other Peruvian museums there...More

A small museum but really interesting. You pay your entrance and you join a tour in your language so you learn all about Juanita the ice mummy and the culture of her time. The tour starts with a video about her discovery which was very...More

We were very disappointed when we arrived, to find that the "Juanita Mummy" was on tour and not in the museum, need I say more.

The story about "juanita" is very interesting, so everybody go to the museum. But inside it is very dark. There are a lot of objects they found during the argeological excavation that they show, but because of the poor light you hardly can see the...More

There were Tripadvisor reviews that stimulated my interest in this museum. I read a very thorough run down of the hour long experience. The whole guided tour was very respectful of the culture and the body to be seen at the end. It is a...More

This museum has a great collection related to the Incan children who were sacrificed as an offering to Inca gods. Watch the National Geographic video (20 min) and then see the archeological treasures.

Worth a quick visit to see some of their artifacts, but the museum is a bit dated, and the freeze-dried mummy is a bit disturbing.

This was a nice way to spend an hour in Arequipa. The museum is dedicated to a rather macabre practice of the incas... so if you're easily creeped out, this may not be for you. To preserve the items in the museum, they keep all...More

Only thing about the place is the ice Mummy - vanquita (i think). Very sad and very cool to look at an ice mummy. Overall an amazing experience. The guides english isn't too clear though. No pictures allowed here.

It was exciting to meet Juanita, a 550 years old "young lady" still frozen. A lot of history to learn and to share later on.

From what i can see in Google, the hours are 9am to 6pm. With Juanita, I would check first as they do remove her for a few months of the year and replace her with one of the other Ice Mummies. Hope this helps

When you are in Arequipa, stop by and confirm if Juanita is there before you buy your tickets. They might have other mummys or attractions in May. The museum is in downtown Arequipa, so do this as you are walking through... More
