The historic section of Arequipa is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site due to the abundance of Spanish colonial buildings as well as several cathedrals and monasteries. Be sure to take a walking tour to see all of them.

This historic city had such an impact on us that we decided we would definitely return in the near future. The historic old town of Arequipa was built with volcanic sillar rock and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in December 2000.

The architecture is like a fusion of European and local native tastes. The result is simply remarkable.

If you can, do stay at least two nights here to explore this wonderful city.

Highly Recommended!

The harassment you suffer while walking around the center by vendor os tours, sometimes on their own or carrying dos or cats souvenirs or restaurants, apart from it, the ladies who carry around baby sheep or alpacas to make you take a picture of them, in exchange of money, please do not accept that, that way you'll be supporting animal abuse and animal exploitation, that's is really awful, I suggest you all buy tours to the agencies you were recommended, by other travelers, or if you want to buy souvenirs, do it a the shops you may find all along the way, that is gonna be better for you.

Cute and small. It makes you forget about all the horrible views and traffic entering the city. Downtown it’s manicured and clean, walkable. Great bar scene.

Lovely inside the building. Cultural building so knees and shoulders must be covered.
At night there are rooftop bars nearby to view it all lit up.

We heard of Arequipa as the white city or la ciudad blanca, without really knowing why. Walk through the old part of the City and you understand :-) The historic center is beautiful and very well cared / renovated. You can enter in many houses to discover the inner gardens or squares. A must see and a wonderful day or half day walk. Many restaurant or cafe options as well if you want to stop a while for a rest

When you walk around here, your eyes are roaming everywhere just to take it all in! Lots of vendors selling items, and food also. The home-made ice cream I tasted was delicious! No matter what you buy, you are getting good value for the money.
