Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is located right on Calle Larga and multiple buses stop right in front. All the markets in Cuenca are pretty much the same, but this is easiest from my house. I buy a lot of my food from here. Meat and fruits on the first floor, restaurants and veggies on the second floor. My kids love taking fried chicken home ($1 a piece) to eat the next day cold. Saves me from having to cook. Pork is also a specialty of the people of the Sierra (mountains), so try some! It's great!
Some expats worry about buying meat here as it isn't refrigerated, but the stand owners are very smart about rotating stock and you can smell it is fresh. I have never had a problem, which I can't say for the local supermarket (Supermaxi) where I have gotten bad chicken 3 times!
Ask the price of something..."cherries are $3.50 a pound", then offer less or ask for more products "I'll buy if you sell them for $3 a pound". Or if you make a purchase ask for a "llapa", which is a little gift for buying something. This is a traditional custom here.

The market has everything you could ever need to buy. Fruits, vegetables, meat, staples etc.
On the second floor is the food court where you can get all types of local dishes. We decided to try the delicious looking roasted pork for lunch and it was amazing!! You buy it by the plate ($3.00, $4.00, $5.00). It is served with hominy, potato cakes and salad. I would highly recommend you try it.

Found several good bargains. Wish that I had more time to shop there. Only had a few hours but sure could have made several more purchases. Wonder if anyone has an online store.

The market hall on calle Larga is not particularly attractive. Functional with two storeys divided by different sections and easily accessible also for suppliers of various kinds of food. This is one of the markets where locals buy enormous amounts of meat: pork, beef, chicken. Though I am not vegetarian, even for me a bit over the top.
However, fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and all kinds of dairy (locally made cheese) are also for sale. Nuts and beans are on the westside of the hall, where there is a bakery as well. The food court on the second floor is rather standard, but offers a huge variety of local dishes.
Overall a very lively place, definitely worth a visit if you want get an idea of the local diet.

Beware white peoples. The vendors in this market charge one price for white people and another for local indigenous people. Ask for prices up front and note what the locals are paying for the same food/produce. From what I experienced you can expect to pay up to double.

Have been to Mercado 10 de Augusto 2 times, 1 time for Mercado 9 de Octubre.
Would like to say August 10 is my winner. Similar unbelievable variety at both, but I think August 10 is just a bit more gritty of a neigborhood and more fun. Especially like the wheelbarrow vendors for the strawberries and cherries this time. At lunch at several and especially liked a huge plate of Hornado ( roast whole pork). The vendors of the pork are especially eager to give you a free sample via an ungloved outstretched hand.
Guess it depends what side of town you are on...both are worth the walk!

Cuenca is a city with a variety of good restaurants fill with local and international food, you can have European, American, Asian, Arab food and fish; but when it comes to local cooking, our preference will be always the Local Market, WHY? Well easy…. The fresh test of the fruits the local cheese avocados, river fish, and a variety of tortillas made with fresh and dry corn, sandwich called tostadas with ham or just cheese.
I can’t describe the whole thing so I will allow you to experience by yourself next time of is you visit Cuenca for the first time.
Is a 5 minut walk from the central plaza called Abdon Calderon or the Cathedral

Our friend took us to this market which is named after the country’s Independence Day. We went up to the second floor and went through an array of stalls that serves fresh- squeezed natural juices. Thereafter, We came to the section that serves local roast pig “hornado”. There were several stalls each displaying an entire freshly roasted pig. We each ordered a serving of hornado that came with “mote” boiled local corn kernels, mash potatoes balls glazed with homemade sauce, and fresh salad mix. We washed down this mouth-watering dish with fresh coconut juice. All in all a great experience to visit a local market and to try local food.

A bustling market selling mainly food, initially fresh fruit and veg plus coffee and chocolate......even cows stomach to make cheese with. Obviously for the locals and at the far end there is a foodhall, with locals selling cooked food, whole roasted pigs lay ready to be served up with potatoes and salad, alongside fish, chicken and guinea pig. All looked totally appetising, had a taste of one of the pigs, best pork ever.
Spent an hour wandering and taking it in, wishing it was later than 10am and we hadn't just had a big breakfast!!!

My wife and I visited the 2 biggest farmers markets (9 & 10) and I must say there isn't any type of food that is not found here. If your only experience in the US is grocery store chains this is eye-opening,
