User friendly. Good guides in several languages, nice historical display, great display of Panama hat making and finishing techniques, bus-friendly parking, great store for hats, and quality artisan items.

Loved visiting this hat museum and store, with many sizes and styles of woven Panama Hats. Located right on Calle Larga, in the central part of Old Town (El Centro), it is a must stop in Cuenca.

Came on a Saturday so the factory had no workers. They had free guided tours in English, Spanish and German. We opted to read the displays and walked through at our own pace. The shop was opened and had a large selection of hats of...More

Yes, of course I did end up buying one, but this tour was far from "old hat." It emphasized the indigenous traditions of handiwork that still inform the modern production of the so-called Panama hat, including the women (some with children) on premises who actually...More

A visit here is a must, in my opinion, whilst in Cuenca. See all the old machinery and traditions of the montecristo hat making process. Also, there is a cafe upstairs with great views across the new part of Cuenca and the river.

This was a worthwhile tour to see how an old industry produces this unique product. The tour, naturally, ends in the shop where the hats are available, but there is no pressure to buy (but we did anyway!)

The tour of the work shop is most interesting and done very well, you get to see each process in the making of Panama hats. The exhibits and photos are interesting too and there are tens of different styles of hats on display. You can...More

Nobody who has visited Ecuador would call the famous hats Panamá hats any more as they are actually a brand unique to Ecuador. These type of reeds ( straws) are grown only in Ecuador at a certain height. And the most famous hats are produced...More

The Homero Ortega panama hat factory in Cuenca, Ecuador, gives a wonderful overview of the hat making process. The informative museum shows steps from reed to final product, and in the workshop one can watch the pressing process. It's a treat to see how lovingly...More

I was truly surprised at how interesting and informative the free guided tour was of this well-known hat factory. Even more stunning is the retail shop where over 90 designs are available for purchase.
