Huge square dominated by the Dominican complex and a statue of Marshal Sucre in the middle. An ensemble of white modern sculptures has been added near the convent with museum. On the main Guyaquil road there are some low budget restaurants. Near the church are vendors and quite a few people begging. Overall a pleasant square though I missed a place with shade.

We visited the Plaza de Santa Domingo during the week and we found it to be a pleasant little plaza. However, we happened to be in the same area on the weekend and it was really alive with many locals enjoying dancing and music. There were also many stalls surrounding the plaza selling local wares. So, if you can, visit this plaza on the weekend to enjoy a more exciting atmosphere.

Santa Domingo is a great place to just kick back and relax. The place is relativly inexpensive for all you folks coming from developed countries such as the United States, UK Canda etc.... There are several great resteraunts surrounding the plaza. The food is simply delicious. Language can be a bit of a problem. I suggest downloading google translate on your mobile. It made communicating a whole lot easier for me. Cigar enthusiast there is a authentic cigar factory right opposite the plaza. You can go in and see how they role the cigars and everything. Plus they retail at great prices. Do try one.
However, I must warn you that it is not a safe place to visit alone. Someone i know ended up getting robbed.

The plaza is near a bus stop we used while exploring Quito. My wife and I visited the plaza on a Saturday and again on Sunday. The plaza was alive on both days with Andean music and local dance troupes. There is also a market selling local crafts and food vendors. A great place to people watch and relax.

The magnificent convent of Santo Domingo is the largest of Quito Convents, built on 1545, has in their treasures the twin clock of the Big Ben of London. The best Library of rare historical, literarian, and religious library, plus the large chorus books all painted by hand by the fryers. A supreme chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary, which was built over an arch and its street that passes under it. The refectorium is the largest and most decorated one of the convents and cloisters in Quito. Its five patios and works of art made by Father Bedon are worth to be seen.
Very Close to the convent you will find La Ronda Street full of restaurants, Casa San Marcos, with its magnificent cafeteria, and if you want something less fancy Cafe Dios no Muere.

It has a statue of Mariscal Sucre (hero), but I think it is the least interesting plaza in old town, it is just one block away from La Ronda though.

Other than visiting the church, there is no reason to come to this plaza. The five or six times during my stay in Quito that I came by this plaza it was deserted but for some dodgy folks near the bus stand whom I avoided. The plaza alone should not be considered a tourist destination.

For a variety of reasons - we found ourselves hanging out on the plaza for nearly a couple of hours. Certainly not worthy as a destination all by itself.
Our hotel (Casa Alquimia) is on one corner of the plaza - and we had two nights right there. The character of the plaza changes from commuter transport hub during AM & PM rush hours to a sketchy scene at night / early mornings.
However, the Museo de Fray Pedro Bedon (which faces the plaza) is DEFINITELY EXCELLENT and should not be missed.
Also La Ronda is one block over - and has excellent restaurants.

Average plaza. Not a whole lot going on here. Not many tourists, which means no vendors, which means, nothing really going on. Pretty dead when I came through here, the other surrounding plazas all seemed to be much more "happening." Still, a nice area, if near-by, you could walk through it real quick.

Our hotel was in the plaza, but honestly, besides being a hub for several bus lines, I felt as though it could have been so much more. with flower beds, vendors, etc. Save your time for other plazas.
