This is a quaint and charming plaza to visit while in Old Town. There’s some beautiful architecture to see surrounding the square. It appears many locals gather here.

After two visits to Quito four years apart, I am "hooked." The Independence Plaza is one of the places one must visit among several other obvious choices (consult any tour book or ask your guide).

I fell madly in love with Quito and this magnificent Plaza. Stop, pause and inhale the beuty. The Cathedral is on one end, spectacular government Spanish architecture buildings on another and a lovely boutique hotel on yet another side.

Awesome place to just relax, enjoy the gardens and take in the wonderful people of Quito. This seems to be the local gathering spot and the benches are filled with warm locals! Stop by and enjoy!

If you visit the Quito historic center this is a must see. The plaza is beautiful and interesting. This is one of the stops on the Quito Bus Tour.

The centre of the historical city of Quito. The tourism centre is situated there plus many gracious old buildings. One of the reasons the old city has World Heritage listing.

Grab a beverage and sit and enjoy the cool Quito air while the locals play checkers, strum the guitar and sell homemade cake and ice cream. It’s a great place to relax and digest the many charms of Quito.

Every Monday there is a changing of the guard with marching band, horses, and infantry all in Napoleonic era uniforms. Get there by 10:30am for a good viewing spot. Note that they will march around the statue so anywhere near there is good. Be sure...More

We visited on a Sunday and the square was really busy. Colourful, atmospheric with lots of music and small shops/market type stalls. Typical old style main city square which you have to visit when in town.

Visited the square before our flight home, and what a visit. Security provided a high profile presence for a formal occasion, involving a marching military band, soldiers in traditional dress and mounted cavalry. Did we strike it lucky or what?! The security personnel were present...More

In order to make you and your family safe, as in other Latin American countries make sure you take a hotel taxi or one that is called by your hotel. After you arrive in the old town, don't bring all your fancy jewelry, put... More
