Elegant church of Jesuits. It is also profusely gilded, but with a great taste and preserves an entity of design

The Church of the Society of Jesus (Spanish: La Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús), known colloquially as la Compañía, is a Jesuit church. It is among the best-known churches in Quito because of its large central nave, which is profusely decorated with gold leaf, gilded plaster, and wood carvings. Inspired by two Roman Jesuit churches — the Chiesa del Gesù (1580) and the Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola (1650) — la Compañía is one of the most significant works of Spanish Baroque architecture in South America. It is Quito's most ornate church and (according to some observers) the country's most beautiful.

The entry price seemed high, but we got a guide who just opened our eyes to the history of the church. It was worth every penny.

This cathedral is simply amazing. Unbelievable workmanship in the sanctuary. We've never seen such intricate gold work.

Awesome visit. Not sure you can find another church with this much gold everywhere! The back sanctuary and bell display are nice too.

I love gold and to behold so much in one building is phenomenal! Plus, the carved wood, paintings and sculptures are mind-blowing! Truly awe inspiring. A guide explained various aspects of its aesthetics, but just to be there put a smile on my face.

A beautiful church in a city filled with beautiful churches. These buildings are works of art, painstakingly created to humble man and glorify God. Awe-inspiring.

With the $5 admission for La Compania, I had expected the gold-leaf to have been more fully refurbished, but there's still quite a bit of restoration work to do. Still impressive. Admission also grants access to a small museum with Jesuit art, old church bells, and a smaller chapel (they didn't say I couldn't take pictures back there, and nobody stopped me, so...)

Okay, this is pretty impressive, and I've seen my share of churches. But the best part is when you have a tour guide take you to the roof where you can see the basilica from the top.

…make it this one. We took a full day tour of Quito and stopped inside three churches. This was the best of the three and one of the better churches that we have seen anywhere in South America. What sets this one apart from the rest is the intricate gold leaf that covers the interior from floor to ceiling. I would recommend going with a guide who can tell you more about the history.
