Monument a Los Heroes in Sotomayor Square is dedicated to fallen naval heroes from the battle of Iquique. It is a wonderful dedication to the lost heroes.

Sadly much of the square was closed because of the protests but this was an impressive monument and one that we would have liked more access to.It was erected in 1886 to remeber the two battles of Iquique with Peru in 1879.

This multi stat commemorates the naval Battle of Iquique in 1879 during the War of the Pacific between Chile on one side and Peru and Bolivia on the other. It is important in South American history because, at the time Chile was much smaller, peru was much larger and even Bolivia had apportion of seacoast and an outlet to the world. All that changed with Chil's victory in the war, so the statue, though easy to pass by, represents a very important concept for Chileans, the foundation of the modern nation.
The figure at the top id Arturo Prat, a lawyer and naval captain who, when his own ship the Esmeralda was sinking, led his crew in leaping onto the deck of the enemy ship Huascar. He was inevitably killed but his action typified the courage of himself and his sailors, who are also figure on the statue.
Prat is still revered much like Admiral Nelson and you will find his
name and image everywhere in Chile, on streets and banknotes.

When walking around the city, this monument is often used as a reference point if such is needed when asking the way. As a monument, it is quite grand and has a military guard on duty at all times (probably to deter any graffiti artists - of which there are untold numbers in Valparaiso.)

At the center of the modern Plaza Sotomayor, it is a nice modern monument. The square has an underground parking and is the ideal place to start a city tour with the close by Peral lift.

Standing right in the heart of the large plaza Sotomayor, this is maybe the largest monument to see in Valparaiso and the background of the sea makes it a good photo op, but otherwise, is not all that fascinating.

We are so happy we found that monument as it means do much to the locals. The fact that there were a few men in uniform on and around the Statue made it even more special. A must do while in Valparaiso.

A central monument in the main square outside Central Station.
It has a permanent guard when open and is locked at other times. I wouldn't suggest wandering south of here off the main square as the streets toward, and including, Plaza Echaumen is about as seedy as it gets.

This is more than a memorial to the heroes who gave their lives in an ill-fated battle in Chile's 1879 conflict with Bolivia and Peru. It is actually their final resting place, after being rescued from a common grave. I must admit that I don't quite understand the story, but I understand that the bravery of these men, including Arturo Prat and Ignacio Serrano, ignited support of the war that led to victory. The popularity of Arturo Prat is evidenced by the fact that the most number of streets in Chile bear his name over any other.

Ponder this in front of the eternal flame in honor of these heroes.
