A good point to experience downtown

Gives a good sense of past times glory, with the poet in the background and bustling commerce around.

A crowded area with many street peddlers and reportedly many pickpockets. I suppose a visit is mandatory if you are staying in Valpo, but if you miss it, not to worry!

The plaza itself isn't so special, but bye monument and the navy building are nice to look at. There is a lot of traffic there. This is not especially a must see location .

We saw this memorial whilst we visited Valparaiso, both close to it and also from the hill top after climbing the hill for the view. It honours war heroes and so helps those of us who were not initiated in Chilean history, understand more about what the country had been through, fighting with it's neighbours. The square is also surrounded... More

Everybody in Valpa knows Plaza Sotomayor. The free city tours start from here two times a day (at 10AM and 3PM). It is right behind the old port. In the middle of the square there is a monument to honor Chilean sailors who fought in a war against Peru and Bolivia at the end of the 19th century. Not far... More

The plaza is one of the worst we have visited in South America, and we have seen a lot of plazas. It is more a large roundabout than a plaza. It has a monument that is nice, and a few cafés, but the rest is directly ugly and boring. The best thing about the plaza is that there is a... More

It's central location makes it easy to locate and it's the chosen place to meet different tours in valparaiso. Also, at 10am and 3pm daily, you can catch the 'tours for tips' walking tour; giving a pedestrian viewpoint of all the notable spots in the city,

The Plaza Sotomayor is main square in the old part of the Valparaiso down by the docks. Some of the buildings around the square are in quite good condition. In the middle of the Plaza is the Monument of the Heroes of Iquique with an eternal flame. Adjacent to the plaza is the Muelle Prat - the touristic sector of... More
