Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Arrived in Santiago yesterday and my local host recommended this for a local excursion outside the city to see the mountains. Ive always wanted to see the Andes, so off we went. Uncrowded road, about 25 km from the city.
The park has a moderate sloping trail up into a valley that drains a glacier with a stream. We are about 2400 m above sea level and meander along gravel paths with much native vegetation. We hiked for an hour and a half, maybe 3 miles round trip, but better prepared one could go up to the glacier. Sunnand air are great to arrest jet lag.
I was surprised how dry the vegetation was. Many trees were dying or were desiccated. The country is experiencing many years of drought and this land is tinder dry. Plus the sky was obscured with brown haze. I would think we were far enough away from pollution of Santiago. Maybe dust from exposed soil. But it was not windy. Another plus was cool mountain air.
Ironically most Santiagoans avoid the mountains in the summer. This was a problem for lunch. We drove up the mountain to Ferrelones, a ski town. Almost everything was closed. But we found a modest and inexpensive sandwich shop, with great view of the mountains and we saw 4 CONDORS. The highlight

We visited this park, one hour from the center of Santiago, to hike the Yerba Loca trail about 2.5 miles up to Los Hornitos. The view of the Andes and La Paloma Glacier was amazing. The trail head starts at about 6300 ft elevation. The hike to Los Hornitos climbs to almost 8000 ft, but is a fairly gentle slope. Those that are more adventurous can do the entire trail which is about 16 miles round trip.

A few minutes away of Santiago (about 20 in a car) the heaven awaits. I really enjoyed this experience, it was my first time camping and it was fabulous despite everything that may have happened. There are bathrooms, showers, a nice space to put your tend, a little grill to cook and even a table to sit and enjoy your food while you watch an stunning landscape. It's a very relaxing place, when I went there were people but all of them where nice and friendly. You can hike and even go to the natural made "pools" to refresh yourself!

This sanctuary is the perfect place to disconnect from the city without going far from Santiago. I recommend going by car. It is perfect to go with friends or family, and enjoy a full day of trekking and bird watching, or a weekend of camping and relaxation. It offers incredible landscapes and you will feel that you have the mountain on top of you.

It's an amazing park with a phenomenal hike. It's a very long day trip, so either leave way before sunrise or camp out on the trail. We camped at the base of the trail and it is so stunning there. Hiking towards the snow-capped mountain is amazing.

Wanted to hike up to the glacier on the north side. The trail is now closed for 2019 due to a landslide. Not sure how one can "close" nature, but okay... The amount of horse dung along the trail is absurd to the point where one needs to wear waiters to get through it. The dung attracts the horse-flies, and they are on an all-out feast on your flesh. Not to mention, the valley is quite ugly scenically speaking. For those who state it is 20 min drive from Santiago is 100% drinking the cool-aid. It is closer to an hour, I live in Providencia in the city. I am glad I paid $6,000 CLP to get in!

A nice glacier valley really close to the city. I went in winter (July) and it was cold with iced river. A pity, we are in a terrible drought, so not nice vegetation. Also passing 2900m, landscape is totally rocky. I went till the iced waterfall, 12km far from the last parking. You can continue till the glacier La Paloma, but it is supposed to take 8 hours (maybe around 6 if you are quite fit and don't stop too much). Waterfall and back took me 6 hours, stopping to eat something but returning with a nice pace because it began to snow

Yerba Loca is a beautiful and accesible park near Santiago where you can enjoy the beauty of the Andes Mountains. You can do a day hike or you can take camping gear into the glaciers a couple days ahead. It is worth the try!

Great trip and very easy to do. We hired a car and drove up there, about 90 minutes from Santiago. We hiked the first day for 9km and camped at Lata. We had planned to go further but thunderstorms stopped that. The second day we left the tents set up and took a light pack up to the glacier and back which took about 5 hours return at a good pace. The cascades are an easy scramble with no climbing required. We then packed up and walked out, which took about 3 hours at an easy pace. I took 5litres of water which lasted most of the trip but I did need to filter and treat another 2 from the river to get by. Beware the large amounts of sulphur in the water and a lot of animal manure around. Also keep your food safe at night due to the local rats who will get at it. They carry a virus which can be fatal. The weather can change very quickly here so be prepared and have a great time!

The Yerba Loca Park is a great place to see an Andean valley near Santiago and to be able to do a hike that can be as long or as short as one wants. You will need a car to get to the park (on the road to Farellones ski resort). The park entrance where you register is right by the road and then there is a drive of 4 - 5 km up to the parking and camping areas.
The path is clearly marked though can be a bit confusing at the start as there a multiple tracks. There are information posts that help identify the path and give information about the valley and its flora and fauna.
The path steadily climbs from a start at 1950m and can be as long as 19km (one way to the terminal of the Paloma glacier (sadly in retreat) at 4000m. There are steeper parts of the path than others, but it is nice at the end of the day's trekking that it is all downhill. Cerro Altar, Cer Manchon, Cerro Altar Falso, Cerro La Paloma, all peaks in excess of 4000m are visible during the hike.
Take a picnic, sunblock and plenty of water (especially in summer) as the main stream has high content of salts that make it undrinkable. There is camping at Villa Paulina, the start of the trek as well as camping places along the trail (pack in what you need).
