Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Travel around South America and it's amazing the colonizers you run into. The Spanish, of course. But also the Portuguese, the English, the French and, yes, the Welsh, to name a few.
In Frutillar, Chile, it's Germans.
Museo Colonial Aleman (German Colonial Museum) honors those 1852-and-later immigrants with a park adjoining Lake Llanquihue (see my review, "On a clear day . . .") that recreates their way of life. Founded in 1981, the museum has a country house, a cemetery, a blacksmith's house, a bell tower and a water mill, all set on beautiful forest and gardened grounds (some of the trees are more than 100 years old). Most, if not all, of the items inside the houses are original (but relocated) objects.
TIPS:
* If you're pressed for time, head for the impressive country house and the fascinating old German cemetery near it.

Really worth seeing this museum. 4 different buildings plus very large grounds and gardens, exceeded expectations for a small town museum. Really get an idea about early German immigarants mid 1800's and one of the few museums we have seen in Chile with some English and German descriptions to go with the Spanish. Great vistas across the lake from here too.

Very worthwhile visit to see some details of the way the German settlers lived and made a living in this area from the mid-19th century. Lovely gardens too.
What surprised and disappointed us a bit was that all info boards are only in Spanish, no English, let alone German. For a museum on German heritage this is a fairly poor effort - it cannot be so difficult to get a volunteer native speaker to provide some translations for the information provided on the signboards? Even a flyer to hand out with translated information for every info board on the grounds would be better than this… maybe something that could be improved?!
Thank you though for a nonetheless interesting visit and for keeping these historical details and patrimonial items for all to see!

Nice grounds with paths and a number of buildings that were a traditional early German settler's homestead. Beautiful grounds. One would guess that the way the furniture in the main house was laid out was not at all similar to what it was like originally either in terms of much of the furniture or the rooms it was in.

Booked an excursion off Norwegian Star to Petrohue Falls and Puerto Varas & Frutillar. Loved the countryside and waterfalls.
Lunch was included in the excursion at Museo Colonial Aleman in Frutiliar, Chile. The meal was delicious, the service was excellent and the Pisco Sours were a special treat. There were about thirty people on our tour and everyone had a good time.

The complex looks like it was some original Chilean/German village, but was built gradually from about 1982 to 1988.
Still, worth a visit.

We were on a cruise ship tour thus we had a very short time to spend at the museum. We found the museum to be interesting and well kept up. The small town was also very interesting. We understand that is an annual music festival held in the town. That would be worth attending. There are mostly homes and a few small businesses in the area. The area around the museum was panted with some very nice and large flowers. Please note the pictures.

Beautiful re-creation of a German homestead from the mid 1800s. I was in Frutillar on a group tour. The guide gave us free time in the town. He suggested this museum, which was a good choice.

I think the best thing about this place is that it has an amazing view of Frutillar, Lake Llanquihue and the volcanos surrounding the lake.
Has beautiful landscape and you can learn about the experience of German Colonies that lived in the place.
