About
Located within the depths of the historic and luxuriant Fort Canning Hill, the Battlebox is Singapore’s only World War II bunker that is still operational, albeit as a historic site, today. Built in 1936 and completed in 1939, the Battlebox served as the headquarters for the defending Allied forces against the invading Japanese army in the final days of the Malayan Campaign (8 Dec 1941 — 15 Feb 1942). It was here that Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival and 11 other commanders made the decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese, resulting in possibly the greatest defeat of a British army ever in battle and the beginning of 3 ½ years of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore. Today, the Battlebox has been restored with its rooms recreated based on historical records to what it could have been like during those final fateful days leading to the fall of Singapore.

- stephanie h17 contributionsMust see bunker exhibit for history buffsWe walked here from our hotel with no expectations and were blown away. The bunker is a must see for history buffs, especially if you are interested in Singapore during WWII. I am puzzled by the comments about the difficulty of online booking. The 6 of us walked up and had no trouble getting in nor in understanding the exhibits, which were awesome! It was a good complement to the National Museum across the street from this exhibit.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 25 March 2024
- John DoeNottingham, United Kingdom6 contributionsExcellent time capsule of the fall of SingaporeThe staff are extremely helpful and guide you though the process of downloading the audio guide. They ask for a small donation - starting at $5 for the audio guide. I very much enjoyed the audio guide. The bunker has 12 rooms which have props and information on the wall. It is very well kept and very very interesting. Overall this one was one of the best things I did in Singapore. Definitely worth the $5 for the audio guide. Just make sure you bring headphones.Visited March 2024Travelled soloWritten 29 March 2024
- Kym W1 contributionBattlebox is OPEN with self guided audio toursFound the history fascinating and the dioramas and self guided audio guide was excellent. We couldn’t find any tours and the only information online said you must have a guided tour. This is wrong. They offer the self guided audio by donation (asking for S$5, S$10 or S$50). You must go to Fort Canning Park and walk to the Battlebox. There, you will be helped. They have a small gift shop too. Well worth seeing.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 April 2024
- LG 🥗🍯🥂Longreach, Australia572 contributionsThe most moving experience I have encountered to date.Absolutely amazing. We got a little history lesson from Raymond before we entered. So knowledgeable. We were so grateful. It’s a great experience. From the time you walk down the steps until you exit. The settings and memorabilia are so good. If only those walls could talk. I have been to many jails and historical places including Alcatraz. This is the best yet. Be sure to do guide if you can afford otherwise the audio is great too but make sure you read the info in each room. Lots more to learn. Keep your eye out for the Japenese writing on the walls. Just amazing!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024
- jaymay2202Sydney, Australia338 contributionsThis is one of the best things we didBattlebox is an historical self guided tour, of the bunker at Fort Canning Hill in the park. My husband and I enjoy history, and he particularly likes War stuff, but this is a lot about Singapore and how it 'came to be' the way it is. You can take a self guided audio tour of this historical war bunker, occupied by the British on their failed mission to protect and hold Singapore. At the first sign of trouble they capitulated, but you'll find out all about the lilly livered, girly officers here, and what happened, and what they 'endured'. Its a shame they didn't have more guts. (Shame they weren't Australian). It was fascinating, and honest and real, with real stuff still in the tunnels and bunkers, that seems like you're back in the past. VERY worth it and very well done.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 June 2024
- PlatinumDCSeverna Park, Maryland400 contributionsImportant WWII History & Great Audio TourThe Battlebox exhibit on Fort Canning is an extremely well done museum space telling important Singaporean and British World War Two history. The site is closed Monday and Tuesday, but open the rest of the week for both free and paid tours of the site. The audio tour and signage is very well done, and deserving of top marks. The site of the British military leadership when the decision to surrender Singapore, the well maintained (or refurbished) bunker tells a compelling tale.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 June 2024
- COYS2019Sydney, Australia22 contributionsWell Presented Historic LocationI visited a few years ago, and it was one of the best museum visits I have ever had. We had a young guide who told us so much about the background to these events and the reasons why things turned out as they did. Now, there is only an audio guide that just gives the basics, but it is still worth a visit. The dummy occupants are very well done and bring the place to life.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2024
- Grace T3 contributionsA must for anyone interested in Singapore’s history during WW2This is a must for anyone interested in the history of Singapore and/or World War II. The audio tour is well done and worth the extra cost for the enhanced experience. The location, Ft Canning Park, seems a worthwhile destination to explore as well! The grounds are lovely and the paths well marked.Visited October 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 October 2024
- Bad_Seed4Canberra, Australia820 contributionsWould be excellent if the booking and tech were fixedI have been here before, several year ago and thought it was excellent so wanted to take my partner to show him. I found the website clunky and hard to navigate and the booking of tickets tedious. The site itself is terrific but the audio units are awful. The booking portal implied that you needed to bring your own headphones ie that you would use your own units however on arrival - we were given a small audio unit -these were truly awful - mine actually did not match the displays - at one point, I asked my husband what I should be listening to as it did not match what was in front of me. He said track 11 and I played track 11 which he was listening to for the room we were in and my track 11 was actually for the next room, I needed to listen to track 9 (or whatever) even though we were both in front of the same display ie my numbers didn't match. The units are far more complicated than they need to be and really need to be checked after each usage as to get a message on your unit (as mine did) when trying to find the right track, that says "erase all data" is really inappropriate. I think this is a great attraction and I really like it but the surrounding supports need to be brough up to par.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 October 2024
- neville rAyr, United Kingdom821 contributionsWorth a visitWe were in Singapore for a week and a friend recommended this visit. Set at Fort Channing it is easily accessible by underground. The gardens themselves are worth a visit and it’s the only park I ever visited with an escalator. The staff at battle box are very friendly and helpful. They ensure that you have access to the audio before giving yo7 access to the bunker where allied forces were commanded before the fall of Singapore to the Japanese. Historically interesting, the mannequins are a bit weird but well worth a visit.Visited October 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 October 2024

Having no prior knowledge of the significance of this underground bunker and its operation during the war against the Japanese the information given was both informative & accurate with the addition of archive films. it was also fascinating to see the actual rooms set out as they would have been used. It could be seen by some as a little expensive but we thought it was well worth the money

Was an experience that will stay with all of us for a very long time. The descriptive depiction by the Guide was so moving and palpable and put us directly in the picture regarding the extremely difficult situations that the team faced under such despairing circumstances. Certainly very well run and very well received by all. Thank you!!!

We were really impressed with our visit. The staff welcomed us and our young children and the knowledgeable tour guide did a wonderful job recreating the drama of the fall of Singapore. We were amazed by how effectively she created such drama and excitement from the simple remains of an underground bunker - this really was one of the highlights of our trip to Singapore.

We did a tour of the Battle Box and we walked there from our hotel through Fort Canning Park. Rodney was our tour guide, he was very informative and made our visit very interesting. We learnt much about the surrender of Singapore on 15 February 1942 and it was incredible to be in the very room where the momentous decision was made. The Battle Box is well set up with life like figures depicting the British Officers who were in the room and who made the fatal decision to capitulate. Highly recommended as an incredibly interesting place to visit to learn something about the history of Singapore and the British Empire.

My children enjoyed the trip very much. It is an eye opening tour for us. We get to see the original drawings by people who occupied the space during war time. Tour guide gives us alot of interesting information about what happened during that time.

Our Guide Shaun took us for the first tour of the day and we were absolutely amazed and the level of detail he explained. The site is well preserved and recreated for dramatic effect. If you don't know about the history of Singapore in WWII or even if you do, you should visit here and be a part of it. Truely amazing.

Viewing is by guided tour only but well worth booking in advance. The tour takes you through the Battlebox and via a combination of exhibits and commentary explains the circumstances preceding the surrender, the decision to surrender and the aftermath. Very, very well done. The tour lasted about 2 hours and was riveting.

With the Changi museum closed for renovation we choose this tour to give us an overview of Singapore's history during the 2nd World War. This really is a 'must visit' if you're interested in Singapore's modern history and Britain's imperialist past - which as you will discover on this tour was not always covered in heroic victories. On this occasion it signalled capitulation to the 'enemy' .
The tour was greatly helped by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide who ';walked' the group through the history of the Battlebox.
If you visit Singapore I would strongly suggest booking this tour (and book you must because it is very popular and the group size is strictly limited). The tour last just over an hour and is highly recommended.

We visited Battlebox on Monday 24th Feb 2020. I am absolutely amazed with the whole experience, beginning with exchange of emails discussing disability access, tour itself, knowledge, atmosphere, history, and exeptional staff and their friendliness.
I would like to express special thanks to Joanne for organizing the wheelchair for Mum and being so knowledgeable and interesting guide.
I recommend the visit to Battlebox while in Singapore. Don't miss it!

We went to battle-box recently while casually strolling in fort canning park. This underground bunker will give you a glimpse of history and the part of Singapore's history where important decisions were made by the British to surrender to the Japanese forces during world war 2. You ll find wax statues and things that were used in that era to sustain in that under ground bunker. Lots of information shared with us by the staff. It would recommend it to others as well.

Is the place open on Tuesday and Wednesday?
Is it compulsory to take the fix time tour?
Can we explore the place by ourselve if we arrived early?
Written 24 March 2019
You can check for days and times on the website for availability. Schedule can change.
As for exploring by yourselves. No, it is an escorted, time scheduled tour.
A lot of hard work and history have been retained and established in this bunker.
Obviously you can’t have the public going around in a war time Bunker full of history, doing their own thing.
Not everyone is sensible and for open to abuse. If you get my drift.

What the different between THE BATTLEBOX TOUR
- A Story of Strategy & Surrender ™ (1 hour 15 minutes) and OF GRAVES, GUNS & BATTLES
- A Tour of Battlebox & Fort Canning Hill ™ (2 ½ hours)
Cause we have limit the, would like to know with one is worth to visit?
Written 31 January 2019
The 1Hr 15 Min tour is the must do, it is extremely interesting. The other tour takes in the bunkers but also shows you around Fort Canning Park. If you have limited time make sure you do the 'A Story of Strategy & Surrender' tour. These tours are very popular so suggest being there for the first tour of the day and arrive prior to opening.

Is the site accessible for someone with limited mobility
Written 7 December 2017
Hi Chris, I had sent an email to battlebox and received reply:
“As the Battlebox is an underground bunker, the only way to access the bunker is through one flight of stairs; about 12 steps.
However, we have a wheelchair available for use inside the bunker.
Do let us know if you have any further queries“
Hope the above helps you to decide if battlebox is a place to visit.
