Famous katong laksa, kim chu nyonya kuih, and hotel e.g. holiday inn express katong around this area, few places where you can enjoy the traditional, old time of Singapore time. Is not far from Marina Bay sand and downtown area, 15 minutes drive only, MRT nearby access to this area too.

This residential district is one of the most bustling neighbourhood in Singapore. Historical and rich in heritage, there are many restaurants and cafes in colourful shophouses serving Peranakan delicacies.

My local friend and his family live in this area, tonight we dined at the Danji Korean BBQ Buffet restaurant in Tanjong Katong Rd. The BBQ was cooked by the kids at the table, the meat and vegetables were matched by the sauces and kimchee - it was a perfect meal....I think my favourite was the chicken thighs cooked with... Very much an area of local life going about it's business. Everything was at ridiculous prices eg shirts at S$5 and lower. No attractive building though. Almost would describe it as an area to visit which is not tourist orientated. Lots of restaurants to choose from if you want to eat.

We're staying in this area and it has some fantastic local food around. The Katong plaza (blue building) has some great food in basement level. Some are indoors in air conditioning and other stalks outside . If you walk along that road there are many little restaurants and it's not far from Parkway Parade shopping centre. Will like to stay... More

I chose Katong area as a base point for my trip in singapore because I liked the beautiful colorful houses. I found it a little bit far and inconvenient to transfer to the city area but this place was not busy so that I felt comfortable. If you walk for about 15 minutes to Marina parade area, you can enjoy... More

Pedestrian-friendly with a wide variety of restaurants to chose from. Mixed high and low rise buildings, the traditional ones beautifully painted and maintained and the "five-foot way" clear for walking (unlike Malaysia!). Very well connected by bus service. Not a touristy area.

Katong is full of food. All sorts of cuisines available. And best of all, all within walking distance. Side by side. Get spoilt for choice by the variety available. Steak? Laksa perhaps? Play it cool at a hipster cafe? Or a simple kopi-o at a coffee shop? Your choice is all there. Katong rocks. Just don't bring your car cos... More

Staying in Joo Chiat

Neighbourhood Profile
Joo Chiat
The Joo Chiat area is the traditional home of Peranakan culture in Singapore, an ethnic group descending from the blending of Chinese and Malay families in the 15th century. The neighbourhood is packed with colourful shops, local characters, and quiet charm. The main streets overflow with diners enjoying katong laksa, the signature Peranakan spicy noodle soup. Signs of youthful entrepreneurship are visible as well, with modern cafes, bars, and shops abounding. Visit Joo Chiat to take a break from the big city sights and enjoy a relaxing afternoon with a laid-back and local vibe.
