Don't Miss this Place while shopping in Orchard Road...
Tucked behind The Centrepoint Mall, Emerald Hill is lined with pre-war shophouses with beautifull architectures. It is quaint with a different vibe from the mainstreet shopping belt. Recommended to visit for up to an hour. Nearest MRT - Somerset Station

Small houses that survived the bulldozers.
After traveling along a good part of the anonymous Orchard Road heading west, at a certain point you arrive at a street that goes up to the left full of two-storey houses that have survived the fury of the bulldozers that have distorted the face of Singapore over the years. Almost all the houses have undergone such invasive restorations that they almost seem fake. Even if some of them have been transformed into bars and pubs, this still remains an evocative point of the city, regardless of the new uses.

    Easily enjoy the historic cityscape
It is just steps from Somerset station. I heard that this is the only Peranakan building in the center that still stands. I guess they're preserving it carefully. If you get your knowledge at the Peranakan Museum and then visit here, you will be able to savor the cityscape while thinking about Singapore's history. If you have time, of course you should go to Katon.

    Beautiful houses
Emerald Hill is just off of Orchard Road next to the Somerset MRT station. In addition to the Peranakan architecture there are shops and restaurants. It's a short walk up with beautiful architecture, vibrant colors, and interesting designs. The houses really give you an impression of old Singapore and of days gone by. Do not miss.

If you are shopping along the busy and famous Orchard Road, it is a great stop to visit Emerald Hill Road-- it is located just off the Singapore Visitor Centre on Orchard Road. Walking up this quiet road, you see the colorful historic Peranakan houses. They are very distinctive with the unique shutter doorways in addition to the entrance doors to allow air ventilation in. The decorations and ornate tiles and carvings are unique to each house. Some of the houses are small business establishments while others are places of residence. It is worth to walk up this road for a view.

EMERALD HILL
Emerald Hill was the site of a former nutmeg orchard which started to take shape as a residential neighbourhood in the early 1900s. By the 1930s, a large number of houses at Emerald Hill were occupied by Peranakan families. Peranakans, also known as Straits Chinese or Babas, are the descendants of early Chinese immigrants who married locals and settled in Southeast Asia. This is evidenced by many of the traditional shophouses still there, linked by sheltered verandahs known as five-foot way, retaining their pintu pagars, which are fence-like pairs of revolving doors, colourful wall tiles and panels bearing Chinese motifs like flowers and birds.

Emerald Hill was gazetted as a conservation area in 1989.

Went for a morning run with my husband and i came across one of the house with a yellow paint wall at the back alley with all the weird funny signages. What catches my eye is the signages, no trespassing private property. Does that mean, they own the whole Emerald Hill 😆😂🤣.

If you turn into a side street next to the information desk on Orchard Road, you will come across a small, colorful Peranakan street. It has been converted into restaurants, but the back is an ordinary residential area. You can experience the Peranakan atmosphere here, and it's a surprisingly hidden gem. It might be better to just come here and take in the atmosphere rather than going all the way to Katong.

While exploring Orchard Road colours on buildings up a 'side street' caught my eye. On venturing up there it was interesting to view the buildings close up. There were bars close to the bottom of the rising roadway but these were then replaced by terraced houses, each with individual touches added by residents (such as simple gardens) to make it worth the walk to see. It was also surprisingly quiet given the proximity to Orchard Road but I could imagine at night it may liven up with the bars trading.

In the middle of the orchard tourist shopping madness, one calms down immediately when turning into this quaint little pocket of peace and quiet.

Nice little old style terrace houses give home to a number of bars/bistros.

For Bali Fans: there are two places who serve BinTang Beer ( relatively hard to find otherwise in SIN ) and most places have some tables outside for people watching.

Definitely worth a walk up from orchard for a drink or a bite to eat !

I got the feeling that this small area just off Orchard Road was a very old part of Singapore. Quaint old buildings housed nice little pubs for the most part. It seemed like a great spot to enjoy a drink in relative peace, just metres from the hectic Orchard Road. Emerald Hill is a nice area and a great spot to head to in the evening.

Thanks to Trip advisor reviews my husband and I went in search of Emerald Hill when we visited Singapore last week.A charming oasis of renovated and beautifully decorated shop houses..a photographers dream. Its a residential area,so we tried to be discreet taking photos of people's houses..a few young mums with kids and puppies were chatting out the front of their homes...walk another couple of hundred meters down to Orchard road where there are a number of bars and restaurants...as much as its a little tucked away, Emerald Hill is mentioned on the commentary of the Hop on Hop off bus...so it's not exactly a secret.

The only reason I went near Orchard Road on my last visit to Singapore was to see Emerald Hill Road. I learnt about it from an excellent book by Julian Davison "Singapore Shophouse".
It is a hidden gem: a street of beautifully renovated shophouses/terrace houses, many with informative heritage plaques. A few bars and small restaurants, but mainly a residential street - each house different, all very stylish and the colours are amazing.
If you are sick of traipsing through Orchard Road shopping malls and are suffering from commercial sensory overload, this will be the place to rest, relax and learn about Singaporean heritage architecture. And it is free!

Beautiful and colorful street! Reminded me so much of Notting HIll in London with its row of homes beautifully kept with lush trees and plants. Great to explore while taking a break from shopping in the nearby Orchard Road.
