The area
Neighbourhood: Little India
With a strong local Indian community, this pocket of Singapore can feel like another place and time. Wander past traditional barbershops while local residents in brightly coloured saris patronize retailers from decades past. Peruse streets lined with colourful shops as the aroma of curry tempts you to indulge. Listen to the Bollywood music echoing from storefronts and take in the stalls selling bright flowers, fabrics, and spices. At the 24-hour, four-level Mustafa Shopping Centre, you can shop through the night and find everything from pharmacy and grocery items to Bollywood DVDs and diamond necklaces. Singapore’s Little India offers a colourful, lively taste of the subcontinent and is well worth the visit.

This market has many fruits, vegetables, meats, and many food stalls in the area as well. I do feel the prices are just a bit elevated compared to other markets, and some of the produce is not quite that fresh. Worth a visit because it does have a A LOT of things to offer and smells of many spices and cooking

We chose to skip paying for our hotel breakfast, yes tight i know, and ventured across the road and found Tekka, proving to be one of the best decisions of our holiday, seeing as though food is the centre point on which our holidays revolve around! When you're one of the few white people trawling the seemingly endless array of stalls I know i'm onto a good thing. Find yourself a table, look a what the locals are eating and dive in head first, you will not be disappointed. I know that in the morning some of us are accustomed to heaping sugar on some dry cardboard-esque food and drowning it in milk to help consumption, and the idea of something full of spice, flavour not heat, is as foreign as the languages here, but i implore you to leave those stereotypes behind and embrace what billions world wide consider breakfast or indeed food itself! I can't recommend Tekka enough, cheap, delicious and you must try Masala Tea, absolutely perfect!

Tekka Market is an amazing market in the heart of Singapore. Fish, prawns and spices galore spill out from several beautifully arranged stalls. This is a full-on market so go early (7:45am) and dress casual. The prawn sellers are particularly good: fast, clear, knowledgeable. The vegetables were also fresh and varied. The meats, however, looked less appealing, reflecting the fact that most of it is imported. However, the presence of baby sharks for sale, some with their fins already sliced off, shocked me. I thought that sort of thing was banned? Also, it's best to wear robust shoes, like Crocs as sticky water pools around the unloading area, which is also closest to the MRT stop.

Local people might find Tekka Market boring, but for an European it's a very interesting place. The smells, the sounds... Everything is so vibrant! And I've never seen that many exotic goods before, I couldn't even name half of them!

Lots of indian and a few asian stalls. Just be aware if there are no prices displayed they tend to charge triple the regular price. This basically is located in Little India. While you are visiting this, visit Mustafa Mall and Time Square as all are close to each other.

Take in all the sensory experiences you can here ... see, hear, feel, smell and - of course - taste. This is a wet market, so there is fresh food in abundance - some you may never have seen before. It's also an everyday market, so there's lots of locals going about their daily shopping here. You can wander about and just enjoy the atmosphere, or you can partake in any of the multitudes of ethnic cuisines here on the ground floor. Upper floors have clothing and other market goods - its really fun.

Recommendation: visit whichever stand has just opened a big pot of biryani, and buy your drinks from one of the stands that sells drinks only (they have the best lassis).

This is a nice contrast to other parts of Singapore. The food stalls sell a variety of items- fruit, meat, fish, etc...Meals are good and cheap. If you have time, I recommend walking beyond the indoor market and exploring the other small shops in Little India. They sell a variety of items- jewelry ( real and costume), flowers, electronics, clothing, souvenirs, etc..Tailoring is also available with a quick turnaround time.

Street food seems to have been swept away in Singapore, which I find a shame. But the hawker centres and purpose-built markets seem quite a good next-best-thing.

The Tekka Market is one of these centres, this one in Little India. I was the only obvious tourist there when I visited, which is just what I wanted! The food floor was packed with people who appeared to be grabbing their working lunch. Men, women, young, old. Students in school uniforms, people in a variety of asian and western dress. Not much English being spoken. I joined a long queue on the assumption that the food would be good, and it was! I spent S$1.60 on a large plate of spicy Indian style rice with chicken and curried egg. I forgot to get a drink from a drink stall first, but an entrepreneurial drink man spotted my mistake and came to my table to sell me lime juice or sugar cane juice which he brought to my table. The food stalls offer a colourful array of all sorts of asian food.

The market also features areas where fish, meat, fruit, vegetables are being sold. And upstairs there are tailors measuring and sewing furiously, and ready-made clothes for sale.

A great atmosphere and a bustling space full of people and noise and smells. I really enjoyed it.
