Amazing site that seems man made but is completely natural. How to get there: you need to buy a ticket at the chocolate hills parking area.. you than catch a mini bus to the top.Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 January 2024
- T DPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania4,478 contributionsBeautiful unique sightBeautiful sight and a must Do if you’re in Bohol. The Hills are only brown and chocolate-looking in the summer during dry season. On all other months it’s green. For a nicer view you can walk about 200 steps uphill to overlook it, but you can also get a good view near the car/ van drop offs. There is a restaurant and t-shirt stores available as well.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 January 2024

I stayed in Cebu and took a day tour here and it was a highlight of the trip. The Chocolate Hills are unique and incredible to look at. From the observation deck, you can see the hills as far as the eye can see. The formations here are truly unique. There appeared to be a lot of activities you can do in the area. It's a day trip.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 August 2024

If you are travelling to Bohol island, this is the only place you must go. Skip other places if you like to spend less money. Tarsier and phyton will pay 100 pesos/person per each location and Loboc river will cost you 850 pesos per person for the boat ride. We were departing from hotel in the Alona beach. They are many local individual travel agent at the beach front. Try to bargain. For the private tour they offer 3500 pesos pls remember this is only for the transportation not including entrance fee. We were able to get 2500 pesos for one day tour. Make sure you get the car you want it. Since we were only 3 person so they gave me toyota vios not a van. The travel time from Alona beach to the chocolate hills was around 2 hours and along the way we noticed they were couple using tricycle also going there. And if you like to spend less money when return to the airport, try using tricycle it costs only 100-150 pesos and only 5-6 minute ride from Alona beach.

Visited 2019 so I thought I would post again just confirm they are still there.
Back in 2019 you could drive to the top of hill but all that has changed.
You now drive into the hill entry only to be stopped and told to park 50m down the road where you pay and get a free shuttle bus to top.
Makes better sense as this place is busy. These formations of an ancient reef are special. Over 1200 of them.
Big stairs, good to stretch the legs after a two hour drive to get there, 10 minutes to take photos then leave as there isn’t anything else keeping you there. Hopefully that would change in time

Easily reached by bus from Loboc (fare 35pesos pp). Entry of 50 pesos pp into park, which should include a lift to the top. We decided to walk up which took only 15 minutes, which also got you a good point to take a photo where no vehicles are able to stop. Food available at the summit, as well as toilets.

Breathtaking view of the Chocolate Hills. Must go there early morning to avoid the hot sun and enjoy cool weather. Best months are probably on January and February when they are cool and breezy. 120 steps to reach the top.

Came to Bohol for the chocolate hills! Did not disappoint. The walk up the stairs was pretty tiring considering it was crowded and extremely hot. They have little huts in between the stairs for a breath of fresh air and beautiful break stops

The chocolate hills are Bohol's claim to fame so this is one the things to tick off when you arrive. The hills composition are similar to those found in coral beds thus the theory that they were under the sea a thousand/million years back.
The area has a number of activities, first being the climb to the viewing deck to see the number of hills strewn through the countryside. There is also an ATV activity but you won't really get to see the massiveness of the hills so do that after the viewing deck.
The hills are best seen during the summer time where they turn to a brown hue (thus the chocolate hills name)
Highly recommended, and also recommended to come early so after this you can enjoy the rest of Bohol.

Isolated chocolate hills can be found on other Philippine islands, but it is on Bohol that there are more than a thousand, and it is here that they are concentrated in large numbers. Scientists are still lost in guessing how so many karst hills were formed, consisting of sandy and rugged marine limestone, roughly the same shape and height. They do not grow trees, only small shrubs and grass. Between February and May, the grass on the hills burns out and turns brown, resembling chocolate truffles in shape. Hence their name. We visited this unique place in May and saw the hills exactly "chocolate." The top of one of the hills is equipped with an observation deck, be sure to climb and admire the circular panorama.

1. Tourist Trap: drivers take tourists to an expensive ATV rental place making them think it’s the only way up to the hills. It’s not, you can walk. We were misled and ended up taking a useless, frustrating and bluntly sad ATV course to get to the hills. They even charge you to use the bathroom.
2. Basic and borderline dangerous infrastructure: the stairs to the view point are narrow, weak and made up of some old tubes and bamboo (my wife actually cut herself climbing up). The view deck is small and crowded with guides making little effort to coordinate the crowd. The ATVs were old and scrappy.
3. Tour guides are not really guides. Despite their good intentions, guides lack deep knowledge of the place and it’s history, they are just there to (1) take you on the short, improvised and useless ATV track and (2) take you underwhelming pictures.
4. Sad. The hills are beautiful, it is a shame they are being exploited this way.

As part of a Bohol Island tour we had to take in the Chocolate Hills. Only there about 40 mins but enough time to take in the wonderful views. Arriving at a small drop off area we were greeted by a set of stairs that rose to a viewing platform on top of one of the hills. The climb takes about 10 minutes depending how fit you are. There are three stopping areas so you take your time if you need it. Beware of some nationalities who seem to ignore any safety precautions and just want to get up and down as quick as possible. The views on the top are excellent. Well worth the climb. There are a few shops and places to get a drink at reasonable prices. A short visit but well worth it.

Worthwhile activity if visiting Bohol. Scooters / motorbikes aren’t allowed all the way up, so you need to park in the car park and take the free shuttle. Entry is 100 pesos (I think), and on a nice day the views are lovely. It makes for some great photos. Not much else other than that and it’s only a short stay, but worthwhile seeing.

Chocolate Hills. Are you allowed to fly a drone there to take photos and video?
Written 13 December 2019
Yes, you can fly there between sun rise and 8am. Just hope you are lucky with dry weather and little wind. After 8am the Tourists start to arrive in force. By 10am the place is very busy. You may need to wake up early to be there by around 7am, but it is worth it for good drone video. The shadows of the hills look better early in the morning than around noon time too. Cheers

I have engaged a local guide who will be waiting for me at Bohol side. But I am wondering if i should book fast ferry to/from Tubigon (instead of Tagbilaran) for my Bohol trip. Is Tubigon Port nearer to the Hills than Tagbilaran Port . Also what is the fastest ferry duration from Tubigon Port to Cebu Port?
Written 17 November 2019
I would recommend riding from tagbilaran because the views are awesome and there’s wildlife sanctuaries to stop at and local places to eat

Hey, How long would you reccomend leaving to see/ walk to the top of the hills?
Written 28 October 2019
Hi not sure what you mean by walking to the top of the hills !!
We went on a group tour which took us up the top of the main tourist area and were dropped off and from there you walk up a pretty steep set of stairs to the top where there is an excellent viewing area. So the walk up and back with plenty of time for photos and to take in and enjoy the view I would allow around an hour. :)

Hallo Ihr Lieben,

Hello,im going to stay in bohol for two nights in May, my question is how to get to bohol from bantayan island? Im going to see the chocolate hills and the tarzier..is there any recommendations besides them two that i mention?hopefully i can get some answer thank you..
Written 1 April 2019
Hi
I’m not sure if there is a transport from bantayan to bohol and if there is, it will be a long journey and exhausting. We always start from Cebu pier to catch an oceanjet ferry that will take 2hr to Bohol this will cost you 450 in pesos or 500 if you want business class. This will mean that you will have to have a journey back from bantayan island to Cebu to get to bohol. Regarding your next question the must thing to do if your there in Bohol is, there is two types of tour which is countryside tour this is in Tagbilaran area where you can do chocolate hills, see tarsier they have two wildlife sanctuary and we went to the one in Loboc which has a lot of animal and tarsier to view, they do ATV if your a sports fun but we are not and lastly if you love falls or nature you can go to their famous lagoon in anda called Cabagnow cave pool and also hop on their floating restaurant for a buffet lunch at 700 in pesos. 2nd tour is the other side of Bohol called panglao where we suggest you checked the hinagdanan Cave where I get a comment from my sister in law that it’s the best things she’d ever done, swimming in it and after that you can unwind at the alona beach but it has changed a lot and more tourist, or you can hire a boat for an island hopping to their islands and to do dolphin watching! Hope you’ll have a great holiday.

Hi I am planning to visit chocolate island. Is there any package tour from manila?
Written 21 November 2018
My recommendation is to travel to Tagbilaran with Philippine Airlines - the best and most punctual airline - and then ask either at Alona Beach, Panglao Island or elsewhere for a driver and car for the day, typically costing P2000 - P2500 (plus entrance fees and lunch that you have to separately buy).

Me, my wife and my 3-year old son are planning to visit the hills. Do we need to take stairs to get to the top to for the view? My concern if its tiring to get there and if better if I don't bring a stroller.
Written 20 October 2018
Hi. You have to leave the stroller in your car or van when you get to the site. There are resting pits along the climb... about 7-8 steps interval. The view from these resting pits are already awesome but of course the view from the top is much better coz it’s a 360 view of the surroundings. If you can manage your kid, a family photo with the hills as background would be awesome.... good memories too.
