Get a tricycle or van to take you there and you can freely wander around after a small admission fee. It's so interesting and fun meeting the prisoners, expect a small dance performance and lots of harassment to buy cigarettes for the prisoners (they ate not pushy though). Make sure to head out to the nearby swimming area afterwards ☺

a dreadful one hour drive by tricycle to get there from Puerto, 2,400 prisoners, 150 max security, 1,000+ medium and the rest minimum. You only meet the medium who are generally 20 years plus inmates, drugs, murder etc. Seemed like really nice guys, but ... no walls but shot on sight if they escape, very few try it, no real... We rented an automatic scooter from puerto (400p) and went there on our own. About a 40 minute drive. At Iwahig we spoke to several people with long to live sentences for murder and other heavy crimes. Very interesting and touching stories sometimes. (Won't wrote them here, go find out for yourself, worth it!) They are happy to see people... More

This was a awesome place to visit. The inmates put on a matinee performance for us & they had handmade wares for sale of good quality & they offered shoulder & hand massages. I didn't know what to expect but this is a truly well run unusual prison. A positive eye opening prison that other prisons could learn a lot... More

Interesting visit to see what prison life is like. It's minimum security and the prisoners walk around unsupervised, They have a store where they sell things made by the prisoners. Nice to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!

Saw the prison mentioned in Lonely planet and as it was raining thought we would give it a go. Interesting and eye opening. As we entered it was a bit nerve racking as the prisoners were just walking around roaming free and there were no guards in sight. Got to the main building where our driver dropped us off and... I went to this prison by motorbike with my girlfriend. We had no idea what to expect when we went here. I wasn't even going to go inside, but then the guard opened the outer gate and signaled us to go. You drive down a dirt road and there is a prison off to the first right. We drove down... More

Me and my partner went there today as it was raining and weather was not the best to go island hopping or to the beach. Hired a tricycle for the day and drove up there took about 45 mins bumpy road in though... Watched a group of young men dance which were in medium security after that we then spoke... More

This was a different visit on an Cultural Island trip. When i am travelling i always want to know more about the locals and how they live. This was a visit to an open prison, where the inmates where living there in houses, they built them self. Having livestocks and farms, while doing correctional work. It is based on an... More
