This is a very lovely museum that showcases the history, culture and heritage of central Java and Yogyakarta. It has a lovely collection of ceramics of the Neolithic era and bronze sculptures from the 8th century. It also includes large collections of wayang shadow puppets, various ancient weapons such as keris, and Javanese masks. This is an exceptionally pleasing way to learn about Javanese culture.

Very well displayed exhibits relating to Javanese art and history. Laid out over 6 floors so we made full use of lifts. Helpful staff who spoke good English. Be aware of the black marks on the floor around exhibits as alarms are set off if you cross. Explanation also in English. Only 100k Rp entry so very good value particularly if chucking it down outside.

An excellent place to learn about Javanese culture and arts. The exhibits are well presented and the English explanation is an important part of the experience. They also have night shows of theatre and dance which are well worth attendance. You come out with a lot of appreciate for the Javanese intricate and complexed culture.

Of course, museums would always be a good school for our history, art, socio-culture, science, and others. A visit to the museum not only provides knowledge but also relaxation and enjoyment.

We went to see the shadow puppet show, there was no information about the story. The room was too bright to enjoy the shadows. The seating was not tiered so had problem to see. The show was boring with no background information, the musicians looked bored. No energy, and we left half way through the show. Please visit this only if you are really really into shadow puppet, waste of time. Rather walk on the Malioboro street.

I visited in 2.30 pm ,and this museum was close in 4.00 pm. The price for local visitor only 3.000 rupiahs, and for foreign visitor only 10.000 rupiahs, and when you visited, theres an enoguh space for free parking, very kind safety guard.and this price include from local guide who speak indonesia, but eventualy theres older local guide can speak english fluently.this price of entrance tiket include of fee this local guide. Theres place i think very comfy place, complete with air refrigerator, enough collection for learn about history of indonesia and prehiclscotry era.
If you like to "be" jogjanish people ,you can rent a custom javanase jogja and can take photo from profesional photografer of local, but i think their work is great,i dont ask ,how price to rent this custom, but i surely the price very cheap .
In the 4.00pm ,uou also can see freely movie cinema to see "wayang",
And the night also you can see directly dance tradional or drama opera of javanese culture, this riket price 20.000 for local and 50.000 for voreign.

When you take a walk at Malioboro street, I would recommend you to visit this museum. The collection is definitely a must to see. There are traditional puppet, mask, batik, wooden craft, ancient manuscript, inscription. They have guides in every section of collection, so you can ask anything. No retribution fee (but I don't know for foreigners).

Sometimes they hold a traditional puppet show too. So you can ask the guide or check on museum IG account.

Btw, I love batik and wooden craft collection. Bless my eyes.

Apart from the Yogyakarta Palace, the Sonobudoyo Museum is one of the hidden gems located in the heart of Yogyakarta City (km 0). Many tourists may have passed it, due to the less publicity. The museum often holds Javanese culture exhibitions, art shows, and the entrance fee is mostly free, or less than USD 1.

Going to the Jayengtilam exhibition is my first return to this museum since the social restrictions in May-September 2020.

When asked how many times have I been to Jogja? The answer is uncountable. Since childhood and after growing up, I often visited Jogja. But if asked, how many times have I watched the Shadow Puppets perfomance?  The answer is the first time, precisely last week.

I have planned to include the Shadow Puppets performance in my "bucket checklist" when I traveled to Jogja in early 2020.

Sonobudoyo Museum is one place that presents Shadow Puppets performance every Monday to Friday at 8 pm if I'm not mistaken. By only paying Rp. 20,000, I can enjoy the appearance of Shadow Puppets perfomance in a large, clean room with the appearance of puppeteer and professional sindens. Even booklets and ticket sheets are printed from quality paper. Shadow Puppets are taken from several parts of the Ramayana story.
I watched episode 4 titled "Anggada Duta" last week. The puppeteer tells the complete story in Javanese. Even though I don't understand Javanese, I can guess the synopsis story line in the booklet and Shadow Puppets characters that was shown that night, and I browsed in Google to find out every Shadow Puppets character name that appeared in each scene that was displayed to help me understand the storyline presented at that night.
Overall, I was satisfied watching Shadow Puppets perfomance at the Sonobudoyo Museum, mainly because the audience around me was the majority of foreign tourists. I am increasingly proud of Indonesian arts and culture.
