I picked up a few batik shirts for myself and had a great experience. Be prepared to spend some time here, as the selection is extensive, with countless options to choose from. My tip: decide on the colors and patterns you prefer beforehand to make the browsing process easier.

Hamzah Batik is choc-a-block full of batik. It's probably a bit overcrowded with stock, but if you are a fan of batik clothing (we are not) it could be a good place to visit, and a potential one-stop shop.
It's not necessarily cheap, but there are a few "bargain bins" of sale items that could be an excellent buy. A staff member helped us to "dive into" one bin in search of the right-sized garment and supplied one of the Hamzah carry bags to hold our find (sadly, just the one!).
At the cash register, our purchase was carefully folded, bagged in cellophane, and then placed in a Store bag. Nifty service for an Rp43,000 t-shirt.
Stock quality looked to be good, and there are some interesting old bits and pieces on display that may be of interest. My husband was taken with the old hand-cranked Singer sewing machine.
I was amused by the very neatly filled pigeonholes of t-shirts sorted in sizes up to "very big". I saw there was 4XL on offer, so there should be something for almost everyone
Well worth a quick look if you are in the area

we spent almost 2 hours here and came away with some lovely bargains. There is a full range of quality so some sifting is required through the 2 floors of goods. The clothes and batik cloth were particularly good

I had heard about Mirota Batik from a lot of my Indonesian friends. i had been told that I had to visit Malioboro for the street food and shopping, but if I wanted to do any serious shopping I had to go to Mirota. How right they were. The place is huge with a mind boggling variety of handicrafts and textiles. One can buy a lot of the same or similar stuff outside on the streets, but ones bargaining skills are tested to the limits outside. Here, the quality of the products is excellent and the prices are fixed. Excellent for people like me who cannot bargain to save their lives.
As one enters there is a wizened old man, probably a hundred years old, playing a traditional Indonesian musical instrument. Heavenly music. Then theres a lady who demonstrates hand made batik. Next is the money changer, who gives very good rates, the baggage counter and the rest of the shop. The textiles are in the ground floor. The choice is so huge that it is impossible to choose. I bought some traditional batik printed T-shirts, skirts, tops, gorgeous material etc. Go a floor up and theres the most incredible array of masks, wooden carvings, silver filigree, leather and cotton bags, spices etc. There are kitchen stuff, soaps with heavenly fragrances, traditional medicines, lamp shades, decorative items and whatever else you can think of. I come from a state in India where silver filigree is famous. And here I was taking pictures of these gorgeous ships, chariots, carts etc and whatsapping them to my wife back home, to help me choose what I had to take back with me. The prices are unbelievable and wish I could have taken back more! If you are in Indonesia and like shopping, go to Yogyakarta and to Mirota Batik

There was so much to chose from that this was definately a shoppers paradise.
Lots of different patterns and styles of batik that you could shop for everyone in the one store.
I bought lots of gifts for overseas friends, bags, hair accessories, necklaces, chocolate - they have everything you can think of and more.
The prices were great and i did not even bother to haggle because the value was good!
Worth a visit and then eat next door!!

Fantastic place. You can find just about anything related to the javanese culture. Batik and souvenir of any kind.
Just one bit of advise: dont you ever go there during big public holiday. I was there on Xmas and it was just bloody mess. Cannot even move around. There were literally zillion of people inside and outside that shop.

I have come here few times, of course for buying Batik. The last time I come here is on the third week of April 2014 with my friends. I think it's a great place for tourist to look for authentic souvenirs at Yogyakarta. They have wide selection of souvenirs, from crafted things to authentic local spices, from unique accessories to good taste local foods, but the main thing that people looking for here is Batik. They have many kind of Batik clothes and apparels from the cheap price to the expensive one. So, it's a great place for visitors to look for everything you want in one place.
Actually, I love wandering around at this place, looking for things but for me, the service of the workers here are terrible. They seldom smile at people and they are not friendly at all. Even the cashier here is not pleasant. It's kind of disappointed for me because they should have a better service right here in Java.
It's opened at 8AM in the morning and closed at 9PM in the evening. It's really crowded for most of the time especially at night and of course in holiday time. It's located at the most famous road in Yogyakarta which is Malioboro Road. So, it's easy for tourist to get here, you can ask everyone at the road, they must know where it is.
Yes, it is a great place for buying souvenirs with lower price but big no for the services.

(+) One of my fave place in Jogja
(+) The place is filled with eclectic and eccentric, most importantly cheap stuffs! They have Kebaya Encim for only $5
(+) Everything about Batik from clothes, dresses, skirts, shoes, sandal, notebook, necklaces, bag, everything about batik with crazy cheap price where you don’t even have to bargain – it saves your time and energy!
(+) Mirota supports local handicraft seller, it sells accessories, paintings, books, traditional beverages and many others, so it is a good thing!
(+) On Saturday, they have a Cabaret Show on their rooftop café
(-) On peak season many people will come and spend hours here, the place will be so crowded, but don’t worry they have many fitting room!
(-) If you have kids under 5yo, I would suggest you’re not taking a long time inside and take a good eye on them, when there’s so much people.
Tips:
• Start very early in the morning, they open from 9AM to 9PM.
• Grab anything you want to try on, gotta be hurry before the flood of people coming to the store
• First floor are Batik clothes, Second Floor are bags, handcraft, accessories, paintings, etc. So make your priority of what you wanna buy but still enjoy the surprises of all those amazing stuffs they sale.
• Time flies fast in the store because you want to see everything, just remember, first thing first on what you wanna buy :)

Mirota Batik at the end of Jalan Malioboro is a must stop for first-time tourists to Yogyakarta and expats looking for souvenirs to take home. On two floors, this store is packed with every kind of handicraft produced in Java. There are racks and racks of batik shirts and blouses, bolts of colorful fabric, and a special room at the back for silk merchandise. You can watch a woman creating a handmade batik as well.
On the other side of the room are shelves and shelves of knickknacks, bags & purses, toys, necklaces, candles, chocolate and anything you could hope to find in Jogja to give away as gifts. The good thing is that you can find everything in one place with set prices.
Unless you enjoy mobs of people, it’s best to go on a weekday. On a busy Saturday morning, it’s a bit overwhelming to jostle through throngs of shoppers in narrow aisles while being reminded by overhead signs to beware of pickpockets.
If you are a genuine connoisseur of batik, you will also want to head to a more specialized and less touristy batik shop, such as Rumah Batik, which produces and sells one-of-a-kind batik shirts, blouses and jackets. Any becak driver knows the way and will wait for you while you shop.

It is the best souvenir store in town. It has AC and reasonable prices. You need not go through the hassle of bargaining and feeling ripped off. I bought a bag in Borobudur for USD 7.5 only to get it in Mirota for USD 4. They have crafts and batik from all over Indonesia. You can spend hours in this store.

Saya belum pernah membeli kain batik per meter di Hamzah Batik/Mirota Batik. Saya pernah membeli kain sarung dan selendang, harganya sekitar 200-berjuta-juta rupiah. :)
