Description:

The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation...

The Chinatown of Jakarta began long before Indonesia existed as a nation and was originally the Chinatown of Batavia. This was the area where the Dutch required the Chinese to live. Today, the whole area is called Glodok and includes traditional houses, markets, architecture and some very beautiful Chinese temples; the Da Shi Miao and the Vihara Dharma Bhakti temples are both popular tourist attractions. The Glodok Market is one of the great commercial centers of Jakarta where you can buy everything from antiques to laptops.

I personally only spend a very short time through china Town since not much of attractions for us especially if you live in Asian countries.

Always nice to visit an area to see what it is like. There are many chinese medicine shops with food and clothing stalls.

Growing up near this area, I just keep falling in love every time I pay this place a visit. I just love the ambiance here. People are so busy with their business but very friendly and seem calm. This place has so many hidden gems when it comes to food. If you're a pork lover, you can easily find pork... More

Walking through the back streets of Glodok is fascinating, it is not hard to imagine how life must have been a hundred years ago with all of the smells and sights. Watch out for the massage parlours.

I've taken a few walking tours around this area and each time will see and learn something new. You will see one of the first Catholic churches built in Jakarta, at the door notice the old clam shells holding the holy water. You will see holy temples and old pharmacies that still uses old methods of fills prescriptions. You will... More

Very close to fatahilla square, very crowded since the streets are narrow and with lines of shops of all kinds where you find plenty of bargains. The temple is quite a distance into one of the side streets. If you have seen temples in china then its not worth walking all the way to this but a stroll in the... More

The China Town in Jakarta was a special experience to us and had a first hand look at how the Chinese culture and religious rituals are performed. I have attached few pictures from the location for better understanding.

It was really cool to check out Chinatown. If you ask your taxi driver to take you to Glodok you'll end up at a super market. Google Kelenteng Jin de Yuan and save a screen shot to show your driver who might not know where to go. I was nervous to go inside the Chinese temple at first being the... More

If you are planning to visit to see the abundance of Chinese restaurants you'll be disappointed. Actually one restaurant would of been a bonus. There are stalls selling food but it looks like any other stall selling food in Jakarta, certainly not Chinese. However if you're planning a visit to see shops selling lots of tacky imported fake Christmas trees,... More

This place is hot, dirty and run down with very little charm. Can't think of a reason to go here, except for the Chinese temple which is also quite run down...
