Chaotian Palace. This is also called the Nanjing Muncipal Museum. I am not too fond of Museums in general and tend to get bored and sleepy after a certain time but this was an exception. I had a very good time. The usual clothes, vessels, arms etc of the bygone days was present but the way they were presented makes a difference. The buildings are separated into different units and the walking between the buildings makes it much more pleasant with the beautiful surroundings. This museum makes use of excellent lighting techniques.
This was built as an imperial palace in the Ming Dynasty. The palace covers an area of more than 70,000 square metres. There are more than 100,000 cultural relics in collection within the palace.
The palace was once the Imperial Central University in Song Dynasty. Chaotian palace was first built by the Hongwu Emperor in the late 14th century during the early Ming Dynasty and it was used primarily by members of the royalty for "veneration of ancestors" which is the practice of living family members who try to provide a deceased family member with continuous happiness and well-being in the afterlife. It is a way of continuing to show respect toward them and it reinforces the unity of family and lineage.
One department showcases the history of the city. Another department displays the various clothes, jewels and ornaments used by the royal family. One department shows the pottery, tools, weapons, furniture etc.
This place is a must if you are touring Nanjing. There is an entrance fee of 20 RMB. You have to shell out another 40 RMB for the Confucious temple exhibit within the campus.

The municipal museum isn't very friendly to a western (read English speaking) tourist. The artifacts are fantastic, the collection seems varied. But the plaques are primarily (read only) in Chinese and the stories are lost without context.
That said, a few of the older exhbits were excellent despite the language barrier. If you need a few hours off the sun, this is not a bad way to spend it.

This place is free of charge. Its an old temple which was refurbished to a palace after numerous fires. One great bonus are the 2 museums inside. So fantastic. Often people will me the oldest portion of the palace, its the chard remains of the original pillars, which is located at the back portion of the complex. It is soaked in liquid, to prevent further decay. Lots of pavilions abound. Nice place for nice historical photos.

The Chaotian Palace (or Nanjing Municipal Museum) was nice to walk around and learn about the city's great history. For English speakers, I recommend getting a free headset from the visitor's center upon entering the grounds. Admission is quite reasonable at only 25 RMB. Overall, a nice place to spend an hour or two.

Peaceful and tranquil yes, but for me not much else.
There is a huge display of treasures and artefacts to see in the museum, but note there are few if any descriptions in English. Yes I know I am in China not London but English is the tourist language in China and they are trying to attract tourists so it's a no brainier - isn't it? I switched off in the museum. All very well looking at great art or old objects but if you aren't told anything about them in a language you can read and understand, you'll switch off too.
The roof tiles are very ornate and do add something to the buildings.
You have to pay extra to go into the main hall, which kind of defeats the object of charging an admission fee at the front gate in my opinion.
Maybe I was having an off day when I visited.

This place was nice, and I learned some things about Nanjing history from its exhibits. The place was also pretty empty (I went about 10am) and peaceful, which is nice considering it is located fairly central downtown.
I looked at it because I had a few hours to kill, and had always noticed it from the bus. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it if you only have a day or two to spend in Nanjing, or if you don't particularly appreciate Chinese cultural relics (ancient pottery, jewelry, etc).

This place is exactly what you would have in mind. It's a plethora of interesting and exciting buys. You look at a vase and wonder how old it is. You see an abacus and wonder who it belonged to. An antique ornament catches your eye and you wonder how much it's really worth!
There were so many different items, from vases to teapots, to coins, to statues, to art to jewellery boxes. Its like seeing pieces of peoples lives and homes from faded societies. You'll get some really unique finds there that are great AUTHENTIC Chinese items that can be gifts for family or friends; better than corny souvenirs you'll get at the modern markets.
I highly recommend it, even if just for a stroll without intention to buy. It was one of my better parts of my trip.
