Not a tourist site, but this is a very convenient Post Office to know about because it has long opening hours and is open even on Sundays - very handy if you have a last minute need to send home shopping that simply won’t fit into suitcases. Built in 1976, it is a squat structure with an austere white exterior, in the Modernist style. It’s not a pretty building but it was never meant to be. It’s very much ‘form follows function’. K.M. Tseng, the local architect said he intended the exterior to be “a truthful expression of what goes on within the concrete walls.” However the row of arched canopies, the deep-set windows and the two-tiered structure gives it a certain retro style. An unexpectedly nice touch inside, is an old decorative arch which was saved from the previous Victorian era Post Office before it was demolished. It reads “As cold water to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country”. Interestingly, the Post Office site marks the 1960s coastline. I always find it surprising to see a physical reminder of just how far aggressive land reclamation has reduced the harbour. Sadly the Post Office’s days are probably numbered. It’s been under threat for some time, with renewed efforts to demolish it being in the news recently. Admittedly it is a prime site and, despite ongoing public resistance, it is earmarked for a high-end commercial block. At this stage, the Post Office will be relocated to Kowloon Bay in 2023.

Top ways to experience General Post Office, Hong Kong and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Central
When people think of Hong Kong, most imagine movies with famous skyscrapers dominating the skyline. The area widely known as Central is the major financial hub and entertainment district, which truly lives up to the saying, “work hard, play hard.” Bars stay open late into the night and there just happens to be a street party every weekend. Although everything seems to be operating at lightning speed, Central is full of quiet, hidden gems. Nestled between office towers are wet markets and some of the city’s oldest restaurants dating back to the 1960s. Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Retreat from the crowds by exploring beautifully restored historical buildings and even a green oasis of botanical gardens.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I want to talk about HK Post in general. If you have been shopping in Mong Kok, it's a good bet that you'll be over weight checking in on your flight. And you know what airlines do if you have too much luggage or weight.

Using the HK Post, I've shipped my goodies back to the States at reasonable rates and in some cases they are waiting for me when I get home. In my case it was model kits from the hobby stores. Thanks to agreeable exchange rates and dependable shipping, sending your goods to yourself and gift to friends and make it easier than hauling it all back on the plane and risking high overweight luggage fees.

HK Post also has an office at the airport should you find that you need mail out stuff in case you are over weight. Overall the system is fast and reliable. You can get a special Fast Pac box in three different sizes based on weight. You pay for it and put in what can fit.

Super friendly and very helpful staff, a bit hard to find on Sundays as it is only a quite obscured entrance below the causeways (no signs at the main entrance)

Took ages to sort out mailing 2 simple parcels. Firstly the building is messy and dirty. It looks like a developing country's office. Secondly, at 4pm today ( Tuesday) half attended. only a few busy staff up and downstairs.
the machine which you will need to inout all your data into is hidden right in the back corner and isnt that easy to use.
Line didnt move. 40 depressed looking people slowly shuffling. I counted more than half enpty booth on both floors.
Staff tried their best and i ended up doing speed post which worked fine but you have to register the parcel upstairs then go down again...
In total an hour and it wasnt even rush hour.
The branches at Wyndham and Connaught are much better- theres someone as you come in at connaught who imediately help confised looking foreigners.
I wasted time and money today.
Good luck at the central branch.

I wanted to save on luggage allowance for the trip home by sending home things I didn't need so purchased a large box from the Post Office. The ground floor shop offers souvenirs and the Guinness World Record holding mural made of stamps may interest philatelists. There was a large number of people industriously sending first day covers to get the stampings on the first floor which may also be of interest! The HK post website is a little bit misleading - there are post offices missing from the lists!

Not part of everyones list of places to visit, however on each of the many ocassions I have visited Hong Kong this is where I buy stamps and mail post cards back home. You could say it has become a tradition at this stage.

The building itself is not interesting to look.

For the philatelist there is a small shop to purchase commemorative and definitive packs as well as postal related gifts.

Lots of stamps for sale here, possibly more than you could ever need on a single visit.

Yes, I would say that if stamps are what you are after then you could do a lot worse than come here.

More stamps than you could shake a stick at.

It is conveniently located in Central just next to IFC. I sometimes mail my letters and post cards at the General Post Office.

Very Helpful Staff who make mailing articles back to the States Easy. Be on the lookout for the special slot near the Retail stands and they will adore your mailings with the official HK Post Seal.

The Hong Kong General Post Office (GPO) is a 5 story building in Central district that was built in 1976 as the new headquarters for the Hong Kong Post. This is a not a tourist attraction but simply a functional post office instead.

The headquarter offers no unique architecture, no visitor tours or anything interesting to see. As such, there no need to visit unless you are in the area and have postal services needs.

If you want to visit a historic post office not far away, find the Old Wan Chai Post Office, a declared monument in Hong Kong. It is located on Queen's Road East in the Wan Chai district of the city.

Note: If you require postal services, it is best to visit the Hong Kong Post website so you can find a GPO post office closest to your hotel. This will be more convenient for those not staying in the immediate vicinity of the GPO headquarter building.
