Top ways to experience Tai Yuen Street Market and nearby attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Wan Chai / Causeway Bay
Wan Chai and Causeway Bay are the retail centres of Hong Kong Island. Filled with shops, malls and restaurants, both areas are bustling with people – tourists and locals alike. Causeway Bay has one of the highest rents on the planet, and is a bit more polished and modern than its Wan Chai counterpart. Beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye – find boutique stores in the above ground floors of buildings and wander into side streets to find interesting restaurants and shops tucked away from the main roads. Wan Chai especially has experienced a modern revival in recent times, with an influx of trendy restaurants and bars around the Star Street area. In addition, both areas contain many of Hong Kong’s iconic tourist attractions worthy of your visit.

Small street market selling all sorts and backed by shops mainly selling clothes and toys. It’s an ok place but nothing compared to Temple Street. In many ways the street itself seems better with some good people watching.

A street of schlock vendors selling the same junk as numerous other places in Hong Kong -- not even worth a detour!

Yes there are toy shops there, but nothing worth going out of your way for. Half a dozen shops selling more or less the same toys and not that much variety or bargains to be had. Our 7 year old was more impressed with the butchers and fish mongers which kind of describes it well. There were other stalls selling clothes etc. and they had more to offer. Save the effort and go to Apliu Street Market in Sham Shui Po. It has more of everything there and with good bargains to be done. You can tie that in with a trip to Ladies Market at the same time. Enough stuff for mum, dad and kids to fill their suitcases.

If you are a toy collector who is frustrated by the lack of stock on the shelves back home than head here, you won't be disappointed.

There are about four or five stores on the street that deal in 100% genuine merchandise. I got some Star Wars toys i couldn't find back home. I was really happy with the choices available and the prices varied depending on the item. The stores are clearly geared towards a collectors market.

If you are a serious toy collector and are on a toy pilgrimage in HK then you must visit Tai Yuen Street.

Visited the street with my
4 kids today. Too bad it was raining, thus many of the cart stalls were not opened. Even so, there were many toy shops open !

Price of branded toys are more expensive then retail or even Singapore. Ie: shopkins cos $4.90 in spore vs Hk28/34. But worth the visit as they sell many toy varieties ☺️

There's also fashion clothing stalls for the mummies who wants to do shopping, quality of item, average.

If you google for things to do with kids in HK, the toy street in Tai Yuen would be there in the list. However, I got a little disappointed. My kids were excited because the descriotions or review were not so much as it is in reality. there were only a few toy stores. Nonetheless, we still bought some LEGO immitations just to have souvenir from this "must go to" place.

It may difficult to imagine that we can go nearby to buy toys at lunch time with low-cost after half-day office work/conference/exhibition in an unfamiliar country. But it can happen on the Tai Yuen Street in Hong Kong.

Central is the central business district of Hong Kong. For two MTR Stations’ distance, there is a famous Toy Street named Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai. No matter how old we are, Tai Yuen Street can evoke our happy childhood memories. It is because every toy from the latest marvel heroes’ figures, limited edition Japanese figures to Tin Toy are available there.

Apart from toys, there is also a great place to pick up seasonal decorations. In the weeks before Chinese New Year, Halloween and Christmas, they sell festival decorations, party outfits, and accessories. In addition, many people in Hong Kong believe that good Feng Shui can attract prosperity and ward off bad luck. Feng Shui decorating can be found there.

Honestly, there are just less than 10 toy stores in Tai Yuen Street, even it is known as a famous toy street. For someone who has a tight schedule during a business trip in Hong Kong Island, the location is perfect.

Most toy manufacturing left Hong Kong for China in the 1980s, but the locals’ passion for kiddie collectables hasn’t died on this street, where everything from semi-precious limited edition figurines to the humble bottle of bubbles are available. This is also a great place to pick up festive decorations.
